ROYAL MASONIO INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS .

A Quarterly Court of Subscribers to this Institution was held on Thursday , the nth inst , at Freemason : *' Hall , Bro . J . H . Matthews , V . P ., P . D . G . D . C , in the chair . There were also present Bros . James Brett , C . N . Webb , Alfred C . Spaull , W . Masters , Robert VV Bourne , H . Bevir , William Vincent , Edward Armitage , H . Massey , E . M . Money , and F . R . W . Hedges

( Secretary ) . Maud Mary Norris , the highest unsuccessful candidate at last election , was ordered to be admitted to the School ; one successful girl , Bertha L . C . Saunders , having been withdrawn by her mother , who has since re-married , and written a letter to the Secretary to the effect that she did not think it right that , while she was

able to keep and educate the child herself , her daughter should keep out of the School a child who was not so fortunately situated . She added , that otherwise , she should have been most pleased for the girl to be educated in the School , which she considered one of the best in the world .

On the motion of Bro . ALFRED C . SPAULL , the 21 elig ible candidates remaining from the last election , together with the 19 whose petitions had been to-day approved , be placed upon the list of candidates for the April election , and that 22 vacancies be declared . A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the proceedings .

New Years' Entertainment At The Girls' School.

NEW YEARS' ENTERTAINMENT AT THE GIRLS' SCHOOL .

The annual New Year ' s entertainment at the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls , St . John ' s Hill , S . W ., took place on Thursday , the 4 th inst . The entertainment was provided for the benefit of those girls who

did not leave the Institution for the Christmas vacation and the result was a complete success . The children one and all seemed to thoroughly enjoy the whole programme , and were sorry when the end came . A large number of visitors attended , and assisted in the carry , ing out of the programme . Among them were Bro .

Sir John B . Monckton , Miss Violet Hanson , Miss Evelyn Austin , Bro . W . Gordon Brown and Mrs . Gordon Brown , Bro . Frank Richardson , Bro . A . C . Spaull ( Chairman of the House Committee for the month ) , Bro . F . R . W . Hedges ( Secretary of the Institution ) , Bro . Eugene Monteuuis , Bro . W . G . Kentish

and daughters , Bro . J . W . Strauson , Bro . W . T . Massey , the Messrs . Dicketts , and some 40 others . On the arrival of the visitors , tea and coffee was served , after which an adjournment was made to the big hall , where Smith ' s Royal Punchinello delighted the audience . The performance was a remarkably

good one , and afforded considerable amusement not only to the children , but to many of the visitors . Dancing was afterwards indulged in , and it was extremely gratifying to observe how excellently the girls in the Institution had been taught this exhilarating exercise . It reflects great credit on the instructor . After an hour had been devoted to terpischore , a

similar period was taken up by conjuring and ventriloquism , and it was amusing to see the astonishment depicted on the features of the youngsters as each feat was accomplished . At the conclusion of the entertainment , the visitors partook of refreshments in the Committee-room , and left about 10 o ' clock , delighted at having participated in one of the most successful New Year's entertainments at thc Girls' School .

The Committee of Management held their regular monthly at Freemasons' Hall , on Wednesday . Bro . S . V . Abraham , P . G . P ., presided , and amongst those present were Bros . Jas . Brett , P . G . P ., Chas . Sheppard , C . A . Cottebrune , A . Mullord , W . Fisher , Hugh Cotter , James Speller , T . W . Whitmarsh , A . H . Hickman , Chas . Kempton , D'Arcy Brennan , G . E .

Fairchild , A . C . Spaull , G . Std . Br . ; F . Mead , P . G . S . B . ; C . H . Webb , Charles Lacey , j . Percy Fitzgerald , H . M . Hobbs , J . E . Bird , W . Belchamber , A . Moore , W . Webber , Robert Gowan , R . Griggs , E . M . Money , C . E . Keyser , P . G . D . ; and James Terry , P . G . S . B . ( Secretary ) . The minutes of the previous meeting having been

read and verified , the Secietary reported the deaths of three male annuitants , one widow annuitant , and one widow candidate . The Warden ' s report of the past month was read and the report of the Finance Committee read , adopted , and ordered to be entered on the minutes . The petition of the widow of a recently deceased annuitant for half her late husband ' s annuity was granted . The Committee then look into

consideration the several petitions submitted to them to the number of 25 , of which 16 were from brethren and nine from the widows of brethren , fn the result these were accepted , and the names ordered to be placed on the list , 15 of the former and five cf latter , while one of the former and two of the latter were ricferred , and one widow petitioner was declared ineligible . The proceedings terminated with thc usual vote uf thanks to the Chairman .

LIVERPOOL . Portal Council ( No . 1 ) . —A very successful meeting- was held at the Bear ' s Paw , on Wednesday , the 3 rd inst . Ten candidates were admitted , the ceremonies being very ablv perform-d by W . Bio . Captain J . D . Murray , who afterwards installed Bro . John C . Robinson

as W . M . It is gratifying- to see this council ( which was resuscitated 12 months ago ) in such a satisfactory condition that the members were enabled to vote 10 guineas to the Girls' School . The members dined with the Ark Mariners at the Bear ' s Paw , and after the repast , which was served in Bro . T . J . Fletcher ' s recherche style , spent a most enjoyable evening .

ANOTHER MASONIC MS .

We have much pleasure in drawing attention to the discovery of another MS . of the " Old Charges , " which Bro . Hughan , who has seen it , considers is about A . D . 1700 , and like the " York MS . " No . 5 . The following announcement has been made of the reproduction , to be ready by the 31 st inst . :

Reprints of tne Newcastle College , Rosicrucian Society of England . Another Roll of the Manuscript Constitutions , or ' Old Charges , ' having been traced ( after strange vicissitudes ) , the Newcastle College are having an autotype facsimile prepared thereof on 14 pages of demy quarto . A transcript in bold Roman type will give , page for page , the contents of the

original scroll with all its quaint verbiage . This valuable document contains the famous ' Anagram upon Masonry , ' and , in addition , a unique poetical postscript of great interest . It is one of the ' York Branch , ' and , in fact , comes from that shire , having been for many years in the custody of an old county family .

' Besides the transcript referred to , a glossary will be printed , and an appendix giving notes on some of the doubtful readings , & c . A critical sketch by Bro . W . J . Hughan , of Torquay , and a few editorial remarks will complete the volume . ' The edition is limited to 300 copies . Each copy

will be identified by a number , as well as the seal of the Newcastle College . The list of subscribers will be published . ' ' The price of the volume is fixed at ios . 6 d . to subscribers , or 12 s . 6 d . to non-subscribers . ' ' The volume may be obtained through ' Lodge Quatuor Coronati . ' "

Liverpool Masonic Ball.

LIVERPOOL MASONIC BALL .

The 45 th annual ball in aid of the funds of the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution , was held on the pth inst ., in the Town Hall . Thanks to the exertions of a strong and influential Committee , and of a large and efficient body of Stewards , the gathering was successful in every respect . The guests ,

numbering close upon 600 , were received by the Right . Hon . the Lord Mayor ( Alderman W . B . Bowring ) , and the Lady Mayoress . This annual ball has now become a Charitable social festival , which is anticipated and enjoyed by the members of the Fraternity and their friends , and the gathering of the 9 th inst ., from every point of view , proved one of the most successful

and pleasant of a long series . The admission of the public to the ball , a custom which has obtained for many years , has been found to be of great advantage to the benevolent object in view , as was evidenced by the numerous representational non-Masons among the dancers of the 9 th inst . By request of the Committee , most of the brethren present appeared in full Masonic

clothing , wearing the jewels and insignia of their rank and oflice in the Craft , the ensemble being brilliant in the extreme . The Executive Committee was constituted as follows : Chairman , Bro . the Hon . Lord Skelmersdale , S . W . 32 ; Deputy Chairman , Bro . James de Bels Adam , P . P . G . W . ; Vice-Chairman , Bro . Captain J .

D . Murray , P . G . Treasurer ; Treasurer , Bro . John Edwards , P . M . 1182 . Bro . W . Rawsthorne , P . M . 1182 and 2364 , proved a capable and energetic Hon . Secretary , and to him is due in no small measure the success of the gathering . The Stewards , numbering about 300 , were captained by Bro . W . M'Gauley , P . M . 1570 , P . P . J . G . D ., who was

assisted by Bro . Tunnicliffe , W . M . 1182 . The refreshments and supper were served in the most satisfactory manner by Bro . Thos . Wood , 1547 , and the music was supplied by Bro . George Eyton , W . M . 2215 . Bro . H . M . Molyneux , P . P . G . D . C , again officiated as M . C , being assisted by Bros . G . A . Harradon , P . P . G . T ., and C . A . Trevitt , W . M . 2316 .

The West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution now educates , clothes , and , in numerous instances , maintains about 260 children annually , and in this work it is materially assisted by the funds accruing from the yearly Masonic festival , which on this occasion are again expected to be very satisfactory and substantial .

The marriage of Air . Gerald Fitzgerald , of the Royal Horse Guards , with Cecil , youngest daughter of the late Mr . William Whitbread , was solemnised in St . Peter ' s , Eaton-square , on Tuesday afternoon . Detachments of non-commissioned officers and troopers lined the nave , and the bride ' s bouquet was presented by the former . Among the wedding presents was a silver cigarette case from Prince Adolphus of Teck , and a silver salver from the oflicers of the Koyal Horse Guards .

INAUGURATION OF A NEW MASONIC HALL AT EDINBURGH . VISIT OF THE M . W . GRAND MASTER . On the Sth inst . the Grand Master Mason of Scotland , accompanied by a deputation of office-bearers of Grand Lodge , including Bros . W . Murray Lyon , Grand Secretary , and David Reid , Grand Cashier , paid a visitation

to the Lodge of Edinburgh Mary ' s Chapel , No . 1 . The occasion of this visit was the inauguration of a commodious and beautiful hall Masonically and artistically decorated , which has been secured by the lodge in the west-end of Hill-street . The chair was occupied by the R . W . M . of the lodge , Bro . Dr . Dickson , who was supported by no fewer than

five Past Masters of the lodge . There was a large attendance of members of No . 1 , and of representatives of other lodges in the province . Previous to the visitation , the Grand Master was entertained at dinner in the Windsor Hotel by the Master and office-bearers . On his arrival at the lodge room he was received with

Masonic honours , and at once formally declared the hall open for Masonic purposes , and congratulated the members on the possession of a hall so beautiful in proportion and admirable in design . In afterwards replying to the toast of " The Grand Lodge , " proposed from the Chair , the GRAND MASTER expressed his pleasure at being in a lodge so distinguished for its antiquity and also for its strength , one

that was ancient and which also kept to the front in modern days . He therefore proposed a toast to " The Prosperity of the Lodge of Edinburgh , " and The R . W . M ., in replying , gave an interesting resume of the history of the lodge since 1584 , mentioning that since 1613 it had had 28 places of abode , and expressed his gratification that after being for 125 years without a home of their own , the lodge had now secured that comfortable abode .

Bro . OFFICER , Past Master , proposed " The Health of the Grand Secretary , " and hailed him as one who had taken charge of a sinking ship , and had seen Grand Lodge out of a debt of ^ 14 , 000 and into possession of , 634 , , besides an annuity fund of . £ 300 a year . The toast of " The Past Masters " was received with

much enthusiasm , and " The Wardens , Bros . P . L . Henderson and R . Walker , " and " The Treasurer , Bro . Lewis , and Secretary , Bro . Hawkes , " were also toasted very heartily . During the evening a number of songs were excellently sung by members of the lodge and visiting brethren .

Annual Ballof The Operative Lodge.

ANNUAL BALLOF THE OPERATIVE LODGE .

The Operative Lodge , No . 150 , held their annual assembly in the Masonic Hall , 12 Exchange-street , Aberdeen , on Tuesday , the 3 rd inst . The company numbered about 250 , including their wives , lady friends , and several of the R . W . Masters of the sister lodges of

the province . Amongst those present were : Bros . J . C . Blake , R . W . M . 190 ; Wm . Duncan , R . W . M . 375 ; and D . Blake , R . W . M . 164 . Apologies were intimated from the whole of the R . W . Masters in the province . Dancing commenced at 6 . 30 p . m ., and at 10 30 a halt was called , when the company adjourned to the

lower hall , where an excellent supper was served by Bro . Blake , City Restaurant . The toast of " The Sister Lodges " was proposed by the R . W . M ., Bro . GEORGE ALLAN , who presided . Bro . J . C . BLAKE replied , and gave " The Operative Lodge . "

The R . W . M . responded , and proposed " The Ladies , " Bro . J TAVLOR , P . M ., replying on their behalf . Dancing was thereafter resumed and kept up till an early hour in the morning . The Committee , with Bro .

George L . Grassick as Secretary , were complimented on the excellent arrangements which were made for the gathering . Bros . John G . Aiken , George Robertson , George Beattie , and George Donald performed the duties of M . C . s .

On Tuesday , the 2 nd inst ., the remains of Bro . David Horn were interred in Auchtcrmutch y Churchyard . Deceased was in hisSist year , and for 47 years had been one of the brethren of St . Gyre ' s Lodge , No . 121 , of which he was at one time R . W . M . The brethren , in full costume , met in their lodge-room , and marched to | the deceased ' s house , and thence preceded

the coffin to the ^ churchyard , where the Masonic service was given , Bro . James Williamson , R . W . M ., presiding , the brethren responding . Prayer was given by Bro . Charles Simpson . The coffin was then lowered into the grave , and four verses of the hymn " When the day

of toil is done ' were sung , led hy Bro . Andrew Wilkie . The brethren then marched round the grave , each casting in a sprig of flower . The service was very impressive throughout , and was witnessed b y a great many townspeople . Deputations were present from Cupar , Kirkcaldy , and other lodges . St . Bride ' s Lodge , t . 'ddingston , propose to build a hall in the village , and are on the look-out lor a suitable site .

A general assembly of the Academicians and Associates of the Royal Academy , was held on Tuesday evening , when Messrs . John S . Sargent and Frank Bramley , painters , and Mr . G . G . Frampton , sculptor , were elected Associates .

LIVERPOOL MASONIC BALL .

The 45 th annual ball in aid of the funds of the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution , was held on the pth inst ., in the Town Hall . Thanks to the exertions of a strong and influential Committee , and of a large and efficient body of Stewards , the gathering was successful in every respect . The guests ,

numbering close upon 600 , were received by the Right . Hon . the Lord Mayor ( Alderman W . B . Bowring ) , and the Lady Mayoress . This annual ball has now become a Charitable social festival , which is anticipated and enjoyed by the members of the Fraternity and their friends , and the gathering of the 9 th inst ., from every point of view , proved one of the most successful

and pleasant of a long series . The admission of the public to the ball , a custom which has obtained for many years , has been found to be of great advantage to the benevolent object in view , as was evidenced by the numerous representational non-Masons among the dancers of the 9 th inst . By request of the Committee , most of the brethren present appeared in full Masonic

clothing , wearing the jewels and insignia of their rank and oflice in the Craft , the ensemble being brilliant in the extreme . The Executive Committee was constituted as follows : Chairman , Bro . the Hon . Lord Skelmersdale , S . W . 32 ; Deputy Chairman , Bro . James de Bels Adam , P . P . G . W . ; Vice-Chairman , Bro . Captain J .

D . Murray , P . G . Treasurer ; Treasurer , Bro . John Edwards , P . M . 1182 . Bro . W . Rawsthorne , P . M . 1182 and 2364 , proved a capable and energetic Hon . Secretary , and to him is due in no small measure the success of the gathering . The Stewards , numbering about 300 , were captained by Bro . W . M'Gauley , P . M . 1570 , P . P . J . G . D ., who was

assisted by Bro . Tunnicliffe , W . M . 1182 . The refreshments and supper were served in the most satisfactory manner by Bro . Thos . Wood , 1547 , and the music was supplied by Bro . George Eyton , W . M . 2215 . Bro . H . M . Molyneux , P . P . G . D . C , again officiated as M . C , being assisted by Bros . G . A . Harradon , P . P . G . T ., and C . A . Trevitt , W . M . 2316 .

The West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution now educates , clothes , and , in numerous instances , maintains about 260 children annually , and in this work it is materially assisted by the funds accruing from the yearly Masonic festival , which on this occasion are again expected to be very satisfactory and substantial .

The marriage of Air . Gerald Fitzgerald , of the Royal Horse Guards , with Cecil , youngest daughter of the late Mr . William Whitbread , was solemnised in St . Peter ' s , Eaton-square , on Tuesday afternoon . Detachments of non-commissioned officers and troopers lined the nave , and the bride ' s bouquet was presented by the former . Among the wedding presents was a silver cigarette case from Prince Adolphus of Teck , and a silver salver from the oflicers of the Koyal Horse Guards .

INAUGURATION OF A NEW MASONIC HALL AT EDINBURGH . VISIT OF THE M . W . GRAND MASTER . On the Sth inst . the Grand Master Mason of Scotland , accompanied by a deputation of office-bearers of Grand Lodge , including Bros . W . Murray Lyon , Grand Secretary , and David Reid , Grand Cashier , paid a visitation

to the Lodge of Edinburgh Mary ' s Chapel , No . 1 . The occasion of this visit was the inauguration of a commodious and beautiful hall Masonically and artistically decorated , which has been secured by the lodge in the west-end of Hill-street . The chair was occupied by the R . W . M . of the lodge , Bro . Dr . Dickson , who was supported by no fewer than

five Past Masters of the lodge . There was a large attendance of members of No . 1 , and of representatives of other lodges in the province . Previous to the visitation , the Grand Master was entertained at dinner in the Windsor Hotel by the Master and office-bearers . On his arrival at the lodge room he was received with

Masonic honours , and at once formally declared the hall open for Masonic purposes , and congratulated the members on the possession of a hall so beautiful in proportion and admirable in design . In afterwards replying to the toast of " The Grand Lodge , " proposed from the Chair , the GRAND MASTER expressed his pleasure at being in a lodge so distinguished for its antiquity and also for its strength , one

that was ancient and which also kept to the front in modern days . He therefore proposed a toast to " The Prosperity of the Lodge of Edinburgh , " and The R . W . M ., in replying , gave an interesting resume of the history of the lodge since 1584 , mentioning that since 1613 it had had 28 places of abode , and expressed his gratification that after being for 125 years without a home of their own , the lodge had now secured that comfortable abode .

Bro . OFFICER , Past Master , proposed " The Health of the Grand Secretary , " and hailed him as one who had taken charge of a sinking ship , and had seen Grand Lodge out of a debt of ^ 14 , 000 and into possession of , 634 , , besides an annuity fund of . £ 300 a year . The toast of " The Past Masters " was received with

much enthusiasm , and " The Wardens , Bros . P . L . Henderson and R . Walker , " and " The Treasurer , Bro . Lewis , and Secretary , Bro . Hawkes , " were also toasted very heartily . During the evening a number of songs were excellently sung by members of the lodge and visiting brethren .

Annual Ballof The Operative Lodge.

ANNUAL BALLOF THE OPERATIVE LODGE .

The Operative Lodge , No . 150 , held their annual assembly in the Masonic Hall , 12 Exchange-street , Aberdeen , on Tuesday , the 3 rd inst . The company numbered about 250 , including their wives , lady friends , and several of the R . W . Masters of the sister lodges of

the province . Amongst those present were : Bros . J . C . Blake , R . W . M . 190 ; Wm . Duncan , R . W . M . 375 ; and D . Blake , R . W . M . 164 . Apologies were intimated from the whole of the R . W . Masters in the province . Dancing commenced at 6 . 30 p . m ., and at 10 30 a halt was called , when the company adjourned to the

lower hall , where an excellent supper was served by Bro . Blake , City Restaurant . The toast of " The Sister Lodges " was proposed by the R . W . M ., Bro . GEORGE ALLAN , who presided . Bro . J . C . BLAKE replied , and gave " The Operative Lodge . "

The R . W . M . responded , and proposed " The Ladies , " Bro . J TAVLOR , P . M ., replying on their behalf . Dancing was thereafter resumed and kept up till an early hour in the morning . The Committee , with Bro .

George L . Grassick as Secretary , were complimented on the excellent arrangements which were made for the gathering . Bros . John G . Aiken , George Robertson , George Beattie , and George Donald performed the duties of M . C . s .

On Tuesday , the 2 nd inst ., the remains of Bro . David Horn were interred in Auchtcrmutch y Churchyard . Deceased was in hisSist year , and for 47 years had been one of the brethren of St . Gyre ' s Lodge , No . 121 , of which he was at one time R . W . M . The brethren , in full costume , met in their lodge-room , and marched to | the deceased ' s house , and thence preceded

the coffin to the ^ churchyard , where the Masonic service was given , Bro . James Williamson , R . W . M ., presiding , the brethren responding . Prayer was given by Bro . Charles Simpson . The coffin was then lowered into the grave , and four verses of the hymn " When the day

of toil is done ' were sung , led hy Bro . Andrew Wilkie . The brethren then marched round the grave , each casting in a sprig of flower . The service was very impressive throughout , and was witnessed b y a great many townspeople . Deputations were present from Cupar , Kirkcaldy , and other lodges . St . Bride ' s Lodge , t . 'ddingston , propose to build a hall in the village , and are on the look-out lor a suitable site .

A general assembly of the Academicians and Associates of the Royal Academy , was held on Tuesday evening , when Messrs . John S . Sargent and Frank Bramley , painters , and Mr . G . G . Frampton , sculptor , were elected Associates .
