It is with very great regret we have to announce that Viscount Newport , eldest son of Bro . the Earl of Bradford , has been lying ill of typhoid fever at his father ' s residence , Weston Park , Shefnal . The latest reports , however , are to the effect that his lordship has been making some progress .
The eldest son of Bro . Lord and Lady Randolph Churchill , who is staying with his mother and the Dowager Duchess of 'Marlborough at Branksome Dene , Bournemouth , met with an accident on Tuesday . The branch of a tree he was climbing broke , and young Mr . Churchill fell to the ground , breaking no bones , but sustaining a severe shaking .
A matinee for the benefit of the " Poor of London " has been arranged to take place at the Empire Theatre , on Wednesday , ' . he 25 th inst ., under the patronage of the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of London . Mr . Conlon , of the Empire Theatre , will receive subscriptions , and his lordship has very kindly consented to distribute the fund .
We regret to announce that Bro . the Earl of Londesborough has been seriously ill , and though the more urgent symptoms had abated , there was an increase in the fever in the early days of the week . However , our distinguished brother was on the whole easier , and had some refreshing sleep . The telegrams and messages and personal enquiries after his lordship ' s health have been very numerous .

The new first-class battleship , the Hood , which has been built under the Naval Defence Act , and is the largest turretship in the world , has been reported ready for the official trials of her machinery , which have been ordered to take place at . the mouth of the Thames . Notwithstanding the palpible thaw , the National Skatinsf Association brought off their matches at Hendon . The ice was over 5 J inches thick , and in such condition that further contests were planned for Thursday . The principal event was a 200 yards race for amateurs , and this proved a line contest . The winner , V . Hiam , of Stratford , covered the distance in the second round in 20 4-5 seconds , beating VV . Elliott by 1-5 second . This time forms an English record .
The Countess of Lathom , who was accompanied by the Lady Alice Wilbraham , and the Mayor and Mayoress of Liverpool , opened a four days' bazaar in St . George's Hall , Liverpool , in behalf of the local mission to railway-men , on Tuesday . Her ladyship spoke in terms of high commendation of the patience , activity , and good humour of English railway servants , whom she declared to be vastly superior to those met with on the Continent .

On Monday eveninganaccidentoccuried to Lord Alcesler in Pall-mall , when he fell down the step of the Travellers ' Club , falling heavily on the pavement . He was picked up by the club servants , and alter a short rest was conveyed to his apartments , 21 , Kydei-street , where Dr . Laking saw him . the gallant admiral has nut been very strong since his illness some months ago , and it was believed that he had suffered another attack , but is now very much better , and is able to go out for a short period .

Tyler in the province over which Bro , Lord Lathom presides , died on the 10 th inst . at his residence in Alt-street , in the 77 . h year of his age . Deceased was one of the oldest Freemasons in the division ,
and for many yeais held the position of Tyler in connection with several local Cialt lodges . He was very highly respected by members of tne Brotherhood and taithfully fulfilled all the Alasonic duties which devolved upon him . His luneral takes place at Anlield Cemetery on Saturday , at two o'clock .
A pleasing spectacle was witnessed at the Drill Hall , Kingston-un-Thames , on Ihursday evening , when the members of the 4 th Volunteer Uatulijn ut the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment received prizes at the" hands ot the Duchess ol Albany . an exce lent report . For the lirst time the battalion numbers over 900 " efficients , " while there are but six •' non-ellicients ; ' and whereas the average of lirst-class shots and marksmen amongst the volunteer forces was , it appeared , 24 per cent ., in tnis regiment it reached 55 . The
underground range at Kennington has done wonuers for the members ' , anu the colonel argued that if all the volunteers in the country had the same opportunities for shooting , 150 , 000 would be marksmen or lirst-class shots . 1 he Duchess of Albany afterwards performed the ceremony of presenting the prizes , amidst hearty enthusiasm .
