At the close of the ceremony , the Festival of St . John was celebrated . A banquet of rare quality had been prepared by Bro . Tom Wood , the proprietor of the hotel , embracing a menu of everything in their proper season . The whole was delightfully served , and the charming decorations of the tables and the extensive display of fruits

and flowers gave a most charming effect . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and responded to , and the enjoyment of the evening was greatly enhanced by songs from several brethren , including Bro . Stephen E . Jupp , P . G . O ., and we must not forget a recitation given by our esteemed Bro . W . Brown , P . M ., Sec , who seemed on that occasion even to surpass himself .

The banquet was provided by Bro . Rimer , and was much enjoyed . The usual loyal and Grand Lodge toasts were honoured , and then the l . P . M . briefly proposed the toast of " The VV . M ., " which was heartily responded to . Bro . Southgate , in response , said he was sure the l . P . M . had spoken much too highly of his ( the W . M . ' s ) abilities .

He was sorry he had had only one Degree to work , especially as they had such a grand gathering of distinguished Masons . He hoped at their next meeting to have more to do , and that he might have just such another splendid gathering as the present one . Bro . Butter , in responding to a hearty reception of the toast of " The Visitors , " said he felt highly honoured at

having his name mentioned by the W . M . as the first of the visitors to respond . He , however , did not take it to infer that he was any better or was the most worthy , but because it was the first time that he had either the honour or opportunity of being with them since his lamentable accident some time ago . He felt that must be so , for he had a distinct and vivid recollection of the kind and unceasing

sympathy he , during the whole of his illness , received from every brother of the Nelson Lodge . A sympathy and kindness for which he felt he never could sufficiently thank them . He was exceedingly pleased to see the excellent working that night of the W . M . and his officers , and to witness the brotherly love that reigned amongst them . He believed in Masonry , nor did he think that it was a mere

perfunctory matter of eating and drinking , but rather a means whereby life was made pleasant to many , and relief extended to their less prosperous fellow Masons , and , indeed , fellow creatures . He trusted to be a good working Mason as long as he lived , and while thanking them most heartily for their kind reception , could assure them it would not be his last visit .

Bro . Coupland spoke of the good and long relationship that existed between the Pattison and Nelson Lodges , and eloquently urged the claims of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution on their charity . Bro . Leslie expressed his thanks , and said he never was happier than with his old friends of Woolwich . It had been a great pleasure to him in his professional capacity

to acknowledge at various times and in various places the peculiar abilities of his brother townsmen , and to watch Woolwich coming to the front , and it was a circumstance that he always remembered with a great deal of pleasure , that in that _ locality he had laid the foundation of his present position . Now he was under a great obligation to the brethren for their kind invitation that night , and felt it

incumbent upon him to try and repay it by any means in his power . He should shortly be in Australia , and he could assure them that he should only be too pleased to undertake any little commission for them he could . If any present had relatives who might have been sent out by a paternal government to that delightful watering-place , Botany Bay , especially for the benefit of their health , and

generally for the good of the country , and would furnish him with the letter and number they were known by when departed , he should only be too happy to find them out , and tell them of their friends at home , or if he could send them a little potted kangaroo , he should be much gratified . The last time he appeared in public he had been kept talking for some hour and a half , but he did not intend that

night to inflict such a burden on them , so would again thank them most cordially for their hearty reception of him at their excellent lodge and hospitable board . Our esteemed brother , who had caused roars of laughter by his witty speech , resumed his seat amid great cheering . Bros . Barnes , Mitchell , White , and Jolly also responded . The other toasts were those of " The Past Masters " and "The Officers . "

Bro . Leslie sang two songs splendidly , and Bros . Hobson , Skinner , and others contributed liberally to the pleasures of the evening .
