THE THEATRES .

The Prince of Wales ' s Theatre was honoured by the presence of the Prince of Wales and Duke and Duchess of Fife on the occasion of the first performance of " Maid Marian . " Never did comic opera get a better start off altogether , for . the whole audience , including our M . W . G . M ., applauded this charming work of two

young Americans , Mr . H . B . Smith and Mr . Reginald De Koven . It cannot be complained that " Maid Marian" has no plot , as is frequently the case in such pieces , for in the second and third acts it is worked up too elaborately . Although b y Americans , there is not . 1 line not quite English . Authors , artistes , and

manager are all to be hig hl y congratulated on the production of one of the prettiest comic operas . How often have not the lines and fortunes of Maid Marian and Robin Hood , otherwise Earl of Huntingdon , been the theme of burlesque , opera-drama , and fairy talcs ' : so our work as regards the story is

easily done . Some of the melodies of Mr . De Koven remind us now and then of Sullivan , but the composer adroitly then goes off into ori ginal stuff . The orchestration is throughout melodious and bri ght . We hardl y know which of the three acts we prefer . The scenery , acting , singing , and songs are

good in all of them . Miss Violet Cameron ' s song of "The Bells" is one of the most tuneful . On Thursday of last week it was encored four times . The tinker ' s song , with accompaniment of hammers and tin pans , is another great feature . The madrigal , " All is fair in love and war , " the pastoral glee , and the quartette ,

" Oh yes , he loves me dearly , " deserve special mention . Miss Cameron sings in her old form , and makes a splendid Allan-a-Dale . Bros . Monkhouse and Le Hay supply the comic business , and are very humorous . Miss Attalie Claire is a captivating Annabal , and maintains all we said of her in " The Rose and the

Ring . " A new comer , Miss Manola , plays the title role . The young lady also hails , like Miss Claire and the authors , from America . She has a rich soprano voice , and can act as well as she sings . Bro . Hayden Coffin never appeared in better form , and a new comer to the stage is Bro . Egbert Roberts , whom most of our

readers have met and heard time and oft at Masonic banquets , and who is the bass . Bro . Charles Harris has again scored in the stage mounting . " Maid Marian " is an opera to see again and again , and we doubt not Mr . Sedger will have the Prince of Wales ' s full for many months .

* * * It is odd that in the same week , when onl y two new events take place , that both should be American . We have spoken of the comic opera at the Prince of Wales ' s , now we have to allude in short terms to the Avenue , which Mr . Henry Lee , who hails from over the

pond , has taken and opened , with Dumas' drama , " Monte Christo . " We believe that most persons went on Saturday expecting to witness burlesque or comic opera , for few playgoers have seen the real " Monte Christo . " It is 23 years since it was g iven in London , and then at the Adelphi b y Webster , with

Fechter as leading man . Only in the form of extravaganza have we of to-day seen it . Our opinion is that a heavy drama in five acts at the Avenue will not draw , excellently as it was played b y Bro . Charles Warner , Miss Millward , Bro . Grahame , & c . Since the opening of the Avenue about 10 years ago onl y opera ,

burlesque , and comedy have been played there . It is true that the audience on Saturday vociferousl y applauded the drama , but we warn Mr . Lee not to be too certain , but to have something else in readiness to take its place should it fail to draw . '' Monte Christo" is a melodrama to see once , and we are glad to have had that opportunity .

* ¥ * To-morrow ( Saturday ) night Mr . Edouin revives " Turned U p , " which was a great success at the Royalty six years ago . Had he properl y rehearsed "Private Enquiry" before producing it to the public we believe it would have succeeded .
