Van Raalte , M . E . Z . ; T . T . Phillips , H . ; W . C Kent , J . ; H . J . Lardner , I . P . Z ., Treas . ; E . Mallett , S . E . ; T . C . Walls , P . Z . ; R . B . Greenwood , P . S . ; H . Forss , 1 st Asst . Soj . ; N . Mackay , C . Patrick , Capt . E . Pettett , and S . Stanbrook . The
visitors were Comps . J . Davis , H . 195 ; and G . Gregory , P . Z . 153 S . The minutes of the previous convocation were read and confirmed . Ballot was then taken for Bros . L . Lardner , 1 745 ; R . Webber , 1 745 ; J . Salmon , J . W . 917 ; which proved unanimous . Installation of Principals was then proceeded with in the following order : Comps . T . T . Phillips , M . E . Z . ; VV . C . Kent , H . ; H . Forss , J . ; the
ceremony being impressively rendered by the Installing Companion , H . J . Lardner , P . Z ., assisted by Comp . T . C . Walls , P . Z . The M . E . Z . then invested the officers for the ensuingyear : Comps . E . Mallett , S . E . ; R . B . Greenwood , S . N ., P . Z . ; H . J . Lardner , Treasurer ; C Patrick , P . S ., who appointed as assistants Comps . Mackay and Roberts . The M . E . Z . invested J . J . Marsh , Janitor . The installation ceremony was rendered in a manner beyond praise , and
M . E . Z . giving a few words of encouragement on investing each of the officers . Bros . L . Lardner and R . Webber were then attested and exalted to the Supreme Degree , the M . E . Z . discharging his duties as First Principal in a manner calling forth the approbation of all present . The H . and J . also equally displayed the attention they had given to the working of the Supreme Degree , discharging their arduous duties with a most exemplary ability , and the
officers gave evidence that the chapter had a bright prospect in the future . The working all round was appreciative , instructive , and entertaining , and enjoyed by all . The M . E . Z . then invested the I . P . Z . with a handsome jewel , the present of the chapter , designed and manufactured by Comp . George Kenning , and in doing so highly commended Comp . J . F . Van Raalte , for his abilities duringhis progress through the chapter . The I . P . Z . returned thanks in a few well selected sentences concerning the past and future
prospects of the chapter . The chapter was then closed in due form , and the companions adjourned to an excellent banquet served in Comp . Clemow ' s best form , after which the usual loyal and Royal Arch toasts were proposed and honoured . The I . P . Z . then proposed the toast of "The M . E . Z ., " complimenting him in the highest degree for his exemplary working . The toast was most enthusiastically received . The M . E . Z ., Comp . T . T . Phillips , in reply , begged to thank the I . P . Z . for the kind and fraternal remarks he
expressed towards himself in proposing his health ; he could assure all the companions how deeply grateful he felt for the hearty manner in which the toast was responded to . He had striven hard to become , under the best instructors of the Royal Arch Degree , as efficient as possible . He had to thank Comps . Lardner and Gregory in a great measure for the knowledge he had obtained in the Supreme Degree . And , although the l . P . Z . had so highly spoken of him , he
yet felt in himself that he had not done so well as he ought to have done , neither had he attained that efficiency to place him on a footing with his predecessors , but he hoped by their next meeting to do so . He assured them he loved Freemasonry in each step he had yet taken upwards in it , and the more he studied each Degree in Freemasonry , the more he was convinced of its goodness and usefulness to all who joined its ranks , and strongly exhorted the companions
to persevere in Royal Arch Masonry , and trusted the knowledge they would therein obtain would enable them to aspire to the proud position he had that evening been installed to fulfil , and with the assistance of the Most High to discharge the duties entrusted to him with credit to himself , and satisfaction to the companions . He hoped to introduce several excellent brethren during his year of office , and undoubtedly others would do the same . If fortune should favour them he
thought they might be able to contribute something to their noble Charities , and he desired to thank them for the handsome manner they had received him that evening . The M . E . Z . proposed "The Exaltees , " observing the attention they appeared to have given to the ceremony of exaltation , and said that in them the chapter had a hopeful future . Response having been given to the toast , Comp . L . Lardner replied that , as the M . E . Z . stated , he had been
deeply impressed with the beautiful ceremony of that evening ; he had never heard anything so elevating and instructive in his life , and should strive to inculcate its useful and benevolent teaching . He thanked the companions for the hearty reception they had given the toast of the exaltees . Comp . Webber desired to reciprocate the sentiments of his co-exaltee . "The Visitors" were next duly reminded by a stirring
address from the M . E . Z ., who said that their presence was of a very acceptable character , the companions seconding the observations of the M . E . Z . by charging bumpers , accompanied by an unusually good " fire . " Comp . Gregory , P . Z ., thanked the companions for their very welcome reception towards him , and told them he had thoroughly enjoyed the evening . He wished to bear testimony to the excellent working of the Principals , and also
said the officers had done well , and doubtless when they had recovered from their apparent slight nervousness they would be all that could be desired . Comp . Davis said he desired to support the observations made by Comp . Gregory on the score of the working ; but he was in no way taken by surprise , knowing as he did the excellent working of the mother lodge , which was second , he believed , to none in Craft Masonry ; he therefore
anticipated all that had so delighted him that evening . He always looked forward with pleasure to an invite from the chapter or lodge , for they were not only enjoyable from a Masonic point of view , but therein he met many old esteemed fellow - workers in Freemasonry , and should always try to be at their meetings when , invited thereto . He begged to thank them for the kind recerftion they had given the toast of the visitors . The M . E . Z . next proposed "The Health of the H . and
J ., the same being well received . Comps . Kent and Forss both returned thanks , stating their determination to persevere in the working , and keep the West Smithfield Chapter up to its present high state of efficiency . The M . E . Z ., in proposing "The Health of the Treasurer , " said it was impossible to pay their esteemed Comp . Lardner , P . Z ,, too great a compliment , They all knew with himself that he had been the life and soul of the chapter ; in fact , he might fairly say that his exertions had made the

chapter what it was in a great measure by his unsurpassable working , his desire to instruct others , his sustaining the chapter substantially when in need , and his ever anxious desire for its welfare . Time would not permit him to further enlarge on his usefulness to them , but he trusted that Comp . Lardner would take the will for the deed , and the companions would best show their appreciation by charging
bumpers and giving their Treasurer a true Royal Arch "five , " to which response the companions gave a most enthusiastic approval . Comp . Lardner , on rising to reply , was met with an ovation he little expected , and which evidently affected him . He said the fraternal remarks of the M . E . Z . in proposing his health and the reception given to the toast had somewhat taken , so to say , the " wind out of his sails . " It
was certainly true he had always had the chapter at heart , and always should have , and trusted the day was far distant when the ties of companionship would be severed , certainly not while he lived . It was very gratifying to him to find his humble efforts were so highly appreciated by them . He
was very pleased to inform them that the chapter had been a success , and , paying all expenses , they had a balance in hand to commence the ensuing year with ; it only required the exertions of the companions to enlarge this success from year to year . He could not resume his seat without again thanking them for the manner they had received him that
evening . The M . E . Z . proposed what he termed a special toast"The Health of their esteemed Comp . Walls , P . Z . "truly remarking that that companion had always been at hand to assist them when required by his eminent services , and for which the chapter returned him their sincere thanks . The toast was truly greeted .
Comp . Walls thanked the M . E . Z . for this mark of favour , and , as a honorary member of the chapter , he desired to render all the good he could to them , and if at any time he might be from their midst and his help was required , they , had only to send to his chambers , and if there they might depend on his immediate attendance . He begged to thank them .
„ The M . E . Z . then proposed the toast of " The Officers , " each of whom , after due reception , returned thanks . The Janitor ' s toast brought this happy and enjoyable evening to a close , and the companions separated . At suitable intervals songs and recitations were interspersed by Comps . Walls , Mackay , Lardner , and others .

Z ,, too great a compliment , They all knew with himself that he had been the life and soul of the chapter ; in fact , he might fairly say that his exertions had made the
Royal Arch.
chapter what it was in a great measure by his unsurpassable working , his desire to instruct others , his sustaining the chapter substantially when in need , and his ever anxious desire for its welfare .
