SPECULATION & INVESTMENT JN STOCKS AND SHARES ¦^ yiTH A MINIMUM RISK ' T'O operate on the Stock Exchange profitably or , in other words , increase one ' s capital , limited though it be , may suggest itself as not very easy of accomplishment . Quick perception , however , tempered with experience and a true knowledge of the influences in force , will , in many cases , render the process comparatively simple . To purchase a stock or security of any description mi g ht not always prove judicious and s . ife , even were the position and p rospects in the particular case the most sound and promising , because an immediate improvement , or , indeed , the maintenance of the prevalent market value would be improbable , if not impossible , so long as the account remained a weak one , or one showing a heavy preponderance of weak operations for the rise . Original Correspondence .

[ We do not hold ourselves responsible for , or even approving of , the opinio is expressed by ourcorrespondents , but we wish in a spirit o { fair play to all to permit—within certain necessary limits—tree discus . iior . 1 « THE SPECIAL GRAND LODGE AT YORK . To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , — May 1 ask you , through your columns , what is the meaning of this "Addendum" accompanying the Grand Lodge circular ? " Special Grand Lodge at York , 1 st July , 1 S 83 . " N . B . —All Grand Officers ( except those of the present year ) attending the ceremony will require tickets of admission to the enclosure , for which a charge of 5 s . will be made . Application for tickets should be made alone to the Grand Secretary . "

I do not profess to understand why any Past Grand Officer who complies with the Grand Master ' s summons to attend is to be mulcted 5 s . for " obedience to orders . " It seems to me altogether " infra dig " to Grand Lodge , and utterly unworthy of the known hospitality and large-heartedness of our good brethren at York . It is evidently one of those little unfortunate specimens of red tape which linger north , south , east , and west among the authorities and committees of our benevolent old Order . I believe this is the first time any such arrangement has been suggested , and for fear of its being made a precedent , I think I may add that the Grand Officers , would 1 feel sure as a body , disapprove of any such innovation . It is , in my opinion , a great blunder , to say the least of it . —Yours fraternally , A MEMBER OF GRAND LODGE .

ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , — 1 think in a matter involving the outlay of so large a sum as £ 3 6 , 000 the opinion of more than one expert would have been advisable ; I feel certain what the answer of Bro . Glutton will be—that it is an extortionate and unjust price , and that no man out of Colney Hatch or other lunatic asylum would ever dream of giving such a price for a piece of land so inaccessible and costly to build upon , where a street could not be formed , and where the houses must be built one above the other on the face of the hill , 1
