Stwds . A handsome gold Past Master ' s jewel was presented to Brn . D . VVood , in recognition cf his serv ' ces during bis year of office . In acknowledging the presentation , Bro . Wood said he felt the kindness of the brethren very much . He had hoped to do mire than he had done for the lodge , still it was a source of satisfaction to him tn he able to hand over the affairs of the lodge to his successor in so prosperous a condition . He
believed the Sackville Lodge was never in a better nosition than at that time , and , though his desire bad been to see the building of a Masonic Hall inaugurated , if not built , during his year of office , he did not despair of yet seeing the hall an accomplished fact , and he would be ready to help on the work in every way in his power . The lodge was then closed .
The annual banquet was afterwards held , to which about 30 brethren sit down , at the Crown Hotel . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and duly honoured . Bro . Freeman , P M ., P . G . D ., Prov . G . Sec , returned thanks for "The Grand Lodge of England , " and also responded to other toasts during the evening . His remarks were to the point and sparkling with wit , as well as full of valuible information on Masonic matters . " The Health of the W . M . " was received with much enthusiasm .
Bro . Wilson , in reply , said he felt deeply the responsible position he had been p laced in by the unanimous choice of the brethren , and he would exert himself to the utmost to sustain the character of the lodge . He felt it a matter of congratulation that he had so good a staff of officers , and with their help and that of the Past Masters he was sure they had a happy and prosperous year before them , and nothing should be wanting on his part to make it so . In reference to the building of a Masonic Hall , he was fully impressed with the necessity for the lodge providing itself with a habitation of
its own in which to meet , and he could assure the brethren on gold authority that Bro . Budd-Budd took a deep interest in the prosperity of the lodge , and that though circumstances had prevented the scheme of the hall being cirried out as originally intended , he believed the site for the building would siill be given by Bro . Budd-Budd , and no doubt he would also help in building the hall , for his own part he would double his promised contribution , and would give , ( . 50 to the building fund ; he hoped the brethren would follow his example .
Bro . Harrison , P . M ., in proposing the toast of " The Installing Master , " said the ceremony had been well parried out , and especially noticed the delivery of the charges which he said had been given in a most impressive manner . Bro . Canon Cooper , P . M ., Chap ., who had the toast of "The Past Masters of the Lodge " placed in his hands , said that it was an untold advantage to have such experienced and zealous Paster Masters as those on the list of the Sackville Lodge . He would especially couple with the toast the name of Bros . Mitchell , P . M . ; Head . P . M . ; and
Betchley , P . M ., as they were all thoroughly well up in their work , and it must be a source of great strength to a W . M . to feel he had such efficient workers behind him . He hoped during the ensuing year a regular lodge of instruction would b ? formed , for it was quite impossible to go through the working of the lodge and the different Dagrees without constant practice and without an opportunity of working together . Those brethren who had delighted them through the evening with so many beautifully sung songs and glees could never have attained the perfection they had reached without frequent and laborious practice . So in Masonry ths officers may be leltei- erfect in their work ,
but a ceremony may lack rc-verence and unprtssiveness because the brethren no not work smoothly and together . He would specially say a word to the assistant officers of the lodge , who ought to be most assiduous in becoming thoroughly efficient in their working . He had often seen what ought to have been very solemn functions marred and rendered ridiculous by the ignorance of the Deacons . The Past Masters , whose health they were about to drink , had earned their position and distinction by hard and good work and if their example was followed by the younger officers of the lodge there was no reason why the working of the Iodge should not be as perfect and impressive as that of any lodge in the province .
Bro . Head , P . M ., returned thanks for the Past Masters , and spoke of his long connection with the lodge and his constant desire to help in every way he could its efficiency 3 rd prosperity . "The Visitors . " "The Wardens , " "The Officers , " and the Tyler ' s toast having been drunk with the accustomed honours , the proceedings of the day were brought to a close .
A most enjoyable and useful evening was thus spent , a great addition to the pleasure of the after nroceedingsbeing thc . excellent singing of the Lyric Local Quartette , under the direction of Bro . W . Wright , P . P . G . Org . Middx .
