Henry Smith was made to say that it was quite " possible " that the general body could sift the claims and qualifications as well as the Committee could . Bro . Deputy Goodmge has been elected Chairman of the City of London School Committee . The deputy is an old boy , and it is worthy of remark that he is the third representative of Aldersgate who has obtained a Corporation chair this year , the other two being Bro . A . J . At a lodge of emergency , held at the Freemasons' Hall , Dover , on Thursday , the 7 th inst , Bro . Bacon , P . M ., Army Inspector of Schools , who is leaving this station for Aldershot , was presented with a marble timepiece , as a token of the services he has rendered to the Military Jubilee Lodge since its formation , nearly four years ago , and of which he was the first Secretary .

At an examination for speed certificates , held at the London Phonetic Shorthand Writers' Association on the 30 th January , Mr . Bernard de Bear , of the Metropolitan School of Shorthand , London , successfully accomplished the task of writing from dictation 2000 words of ordinary newspaper matter in 10 minutes ( being at the rate of 200 words per minute ) , and afterwards correctly transcribing his notes .
Mr . B . de Bear has since been awarded a speed certificate for 200 words per minutes , and has also received , in commemoration of the event , a gold presentation watch , suitably inscribed , from Mr . At last week ' s soiree at the Lyric Club Lady Monckton and Miss Harriett Young's operetta , " Tobacco Jars , " was given , meeting with marked success . It had the advantage of being admirably sustained by Mr . Hirwin Jones , Mr . Frank Morton , Mdlle . Douilly , and Miss Emily Squire .
Bro . J . E . Shand , P . M . 1563 and Sec . 2030 , who has been suffering from the prevailing epidemic , is , we are pleased to hear , sufficiently recovered to be able to attend to his duties . After defraying the expenses of the statue of the late Earl of Iddesleigh , which has been erected in the Central Hall of the Palace of Westminster , a sufficient balance remained in the hands of the Committee to enable them to commission Mr . Long , R . A ., to paint a . replica of his wellknown portrait of Lord Iddesleigh . This has been presented on behalf of the subscribers to the trustees of the National Portrait Gallery , who have added it to the collection .

There died at Streatham , on Friday , the 7 th inst ., aged S 7 , Bro . Edward Baldwin , M . A ., formerly proprietor of the Morning Herald newspaper , and eldest son of Mr . Charles Baldwin , the founder , in 1 S 26 , of the Standard . Bro . Baldwin ' s connection with the Press belongs to a past generation , but in his time he played a prominent part in the newspaper world , and was an ardent supporter of the earlier policy of Lord Derby and Mr . Guizot , then Prime Minister of Trance , sent his portrait to Bro . Baldwin in recognition of his services to the French Government in connection with the mails to India . He was , with two exceptions , the oldest member of the Stationers' Company , having been elected in 1 S 24 , and one of the oldest members of the University of Oxford , having taken his degree in 1 S 23 . He was a Past Junior Warden of the Grand Lodge of England , and was connected with several Masonic Institutions .
