MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

At the Cluswick Lodge , No . 2012 , on the motion of Bro . George Gardner , P . M ., Sec , £ 5 5 s . was voted to the fund to be raised for the pension of Bro . Frederick Binckes . 1 It is proposed to form a lodge in connection with the old boys of St . Olave ' s Grammar School . The idea emanates from the Old Olavian ' s Society , whose members meet at the Masons' Hall Tavern .

Bros . Lord Halsbury ( Lord Chancellor ) , Lord Ashbourne ( Lord Chancellor of Ireland ) , Sir M . E . Hicks-Beach , Bart ., and Lord George Hamilton attended at the Cabinet Council held at the Foreign Office on Monday . Lord Carnarvon , who has been suffering from a severe attack of influenza , was sufficiently recovered on Wednesday evening to dine with his family , but until the weather becomes milder he will not venture out of doors .

Early on Monday morninga fire broke out in the servants ' hall at Hackness Hall , the Yorkshire seat of Bro . Lord Derwent , and was not got under till some hours had elapsed . 1 he whole of the servants' wing was destroyed . It has been announced that the Prince of Wales will arrive at Berlin on the 22 nd March , and will be present at the Chapter of the Order of the Black Eagle , on that day , as well as the Festival of the Order on the day following .

H . R . H . the Princess Mary , Duchess of Teck , accompanied by the Duke of Teck and Princess Mary of Teck , was present at the performance in the Westminster Town Hall , on Monday evening " , of the Children ' s Orchestra , of which her Royal Highness is President .

Mr . George Fdwardes has decided upon the next ballet for the Empire . It will be arranged by Mdme . Katti Lanner , and is entitled " Lorelei . " Mr . H . ISavile Clarke has written a poem , founded on an incident in the Siege of Lucknow , and Miss Amy Roselle will shortly recite it at the Empire .

Lord Arthur Hill and Sir James Ferguson , Bart ., were prt-seiit Sir James Lubbock , Bart , and Bro . Sir John E . Gorst , Q . C , were severally introduced and sworn in as members .

The London Scottish Rifles were inspected by Major-General P . Smith , commanding the Home District , in the Drill Hall at James-street , Buckingham Gate , on Saturday evening last The regiment mustered strong to the number of about 450 , and went earnestly through their drill . 'The prizes were afterwards distributed by General Smith .

I he annual soiree and ball of the St . Bede Lodge , No . 1119 , was held in the Mechanics' Institute on Wednesday evening , the 5 th inst . The large room of the hall had been prettily decorated for the occasion . There were over 100 people present , and dancing was kept up with much zeal till an early hour the next morning , to the strains of Mr . Amers' band .

Among the early records of Lodge No . 35 , constituted in London , 1733 , some of which were published in the Christmas number of the Freemason last month , there are some quaint , not to say queer , minutes . 'The examination of the books as kept in those days would have been a very perplexing task to Grand Lod ge deputations . —Glasgow Evening A ews .

On Saturday afternoon last , the Countess of Cadogan laid the memorial stone of the new Central Free Library for Chelsea in Manossa-road . 'The freehold site is the gift of the Earl of Cadogan , who has also given a valuable piece of land adjoining , on which will be built the South-West Polytechnic Institute . His lordship has also given £ 300 towards the purchase of books for the purpose of the new library .

The latest cry for "Home Rule" comes from Van Dieman ' s Land , where it has been arranged at a meeting of the Tasmanian Masonic Union to invite the lodges on the island to send delegates to attend a convention , to be held at Launceston , on the 20 th prox . The convention will consider the advisability of taking practical steps for the formation of a Grand Lodge .

Bro . Gabriel Lindo has been re-elected Master of the Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers' Company for the ensuing year . Lieut . Prince George of Wales has entered , on board her Majesty's gunnery ship Excellent , upon his course of advanced gunnery studies , which will probably extend over two months .

The number of victims of the Llanerch Colliery disaster is stated as 176 , and the number of widows and children left unprovided for is 310 , of whom 70 are widows , and 240 children . The first meeting" of the Chiswick Lodge , after the installation of Bro . Dowling , was held at the Star and Garter , Kew Bridge , on Monday last Each of the Three Degrees were admirably worked by the VV . M . A full report will appear in our next .

The entertainment we mentioned last week as having been held in aid of the Endowment Fund of the Albert Institute , Southwark , and as having" proved a great success , was organised by Bro . Alfred C . Greenwood , who is a brother of the Provincial Grand Secretary of Surrey , Bro . Charles Greenwood .

In a recent report of the Quarterly Court of the Boys School , Bro . Henry Smith was made to say that it was quite " possible " that the general body could sift the claims and qualifications as well as the Committee could . From the view taken of this question by Bro . Smith , as shown by the context , it is evident that the opposite was intended , and that it should have read "impossible . "

Bro . Deputy Goodmge has been elected Chairman of the City of London School Committee . The deputy is an old boy , and it is worthy of remark that he is the third representative of Aldersgate who has obtained a Corporation chair this year , the other two being Bro . A . J . Altman ( General Purposes ) and Bro . A . Brookman ( Epping Forest ) .

At a lodge of emergency , held at the Freemasons' Hall , Dover , on Thursday , the 7 th inst , Bro . Bacon , P . M ., Army Inspector of Schools , who is leaving this station for Aldershot , was presented with a marble timepiece , as a token of the services he has rendered to the Military Jubilee Lodge since its formation , nearly four years ago , and of which he was the first Secretary .

The annual ball in aid of the North Wales Masonic Charities took place on the nth inst ., at the George Hotel , Bangor , under the patronage of Bro . Lord Harlech , P . G . M . North Wales j Col . Piatt , D . P . G . M . j the Hon . W . E . Saville West , and other Provincial Officers . Bros . R . Langford Jones and H . Grey Edwards , of 384 , were the Honorary Secretaries . A supper was provided by Bro . Dudley Dance , and Mr . Richardson supplied the orchestra .

'I he fifth session of the present Parliament was opened by Royal Commission on Tuesday , the Royal Commissioners being" Bros . Lord Halsbury ( Lord Chancellor ) , the Earl of Limerick , and the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , Viscount Cross , and Lord Knutsford , who appeared in their robes . On the appearance of the House of Commons at the Bar of the upper House , Bro . Lord Halsbury read the Queen ' s speech . Both Houses met in the evening for the transaction of business .

At an examination for speed certificates , held at the London Phonetic Shorthand Writers' Association on the 30 th January , Mr . Bernard de Bear , of the Metropolitan School of Shorthand , London , successfully accomplished the task of writing from dictation 2000 words of ordinary newspaper matter in 10 minutes ( being at the rate of 200 words per minute ) , and afterwards correctly transcribing his notes .

Mr . B . de Bear has since been awarded a speed certificate for 200 words per minutes , and has also received , in commemoration of the event , a gold presentation watch , suitably inscribed , from Mr . Isaac Pitman . 'The members of the Masonic lodges in Doncaster held a ball at the Mansion House , York , on the Oth instant . It was under the patronage of the Provincial Grand Master ,

and the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , the Officers of the Provincial Grand Lodge of West Yorkshire , and the funds are to be devoted to the Masonic Charities . The Committee consisted of Bros . J . A . H . Hirst , A . VV . Fretwell , H . T . Bellerby , T . Anelay , and F . H . Buckland . The company on arriving were received in the drawingroom by the First Principal of the chapter and the Master

Lord Egerton of Tatton is almost convalescent , but will remain indoors during the prevalence of the severe weather . Bro . the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon returned to their residence in Portman-square , from Highclere Castle , on Saturday last , and have since left for Porto Fino , their villa near Genoa .

At last week ' s soiree at the Lyric Club Lady Monckton and Miss Harriett Young's operetta , " Tobacco Jars , " was given , meeting with marked success . It had the advantage of being admirably sustained by Mr . Hirwin Jones , Mr . Frank Morton , Mdlle . Douilly , and Miss Emily Squire .

Bro . J . E . Shand , P . M . 1563 and Sec . 2030 , who has been suffering from the prevailing epidemic , is , we are pleased to hear , sufficiently recovered to be able to attend to his duties . The visit of Prince Albert Victor to India will be commemorated by the association of his name with several regiments of the Native Army , as was done after the visit of the Prince of Wales .

I he Queens wedding present to Miss Fitzroy on her marriage with Mr . Crutchley was of a singularly unique character . It consisted of a diamond pendant , containing a piece of her Majesty's hair . The Lord-Lieutenant and the Countess of Zetland visited the Royal Irish Academy on Wednesday . They were

received by the President , the Rev . Dr . Haughton , F . R . S ., and the members of the council , and were conducted to the library , where an address was presented to Lord Zetland . 'Their excellencies were accompanied by the Countess of Wicklow , Lady Newport , Lord Carysfort , Major Swaine , the Earl of Craven , A . D . C , and Major O'Shaughnessy , A . D . C .

One of the chief features of the matinee given by Miss Rosa Kenny at the Steinway Hall was her appearance , with Mr . Mowbray Marras , in the Helen and Modus scenes in "The Hunchback . " Both actors acquitted themselves very creditably . Miss Kenny also recited with much effect

Schiller ' s vision of Joan of Arc ( translated by her late father , Mr . Charles Lamb Kenney ) , and other well-selected pieces . Mr . Mowbray Marras and Mr . Charles Lander sang ; and other artistes took part in the agreeable entertainment .

After defraying the expenses of the statue of the late Earl of Iddesleigh , which has been erected in the Central Hall of the Palace of Westminster , a sufficient balance remained in the hands of the Committee to enable them to commission Mr . Long , R . A ., to paint a . replica of his wellknown portrait of Lord Iddesleigh . This has been presented on behalf of the subscribers to the trustees of the National Portrait Gallery , who have added it to the collection .

On Monday , the 27 th ult ., the brethren of St . John ' s Lodge , No . 65 , celebrated the anniversary of the birth of Burns in the lodge room , Bro . VV . Murray , R . W . M ., presided , and there was an attendance of about 30 members . A supper , of which a Scotch hasrgis formed a prominent feature , having

been partaken of , the usual loyal and patriotic toasts were proposed from the chair , after which Bro . Major VV . D . Innes proposed " The Memory of Burns , " which was drunk in silence . Toasts and songs followed , and a most harmonious evening was spent .

The present revival of "Our Boys , at the Criterion , is the third to which the piece has been subjected in London since the first famous " run " at the Vaudeville . The first revival was at the Strand , in June , 18 S 4 , when Mr . David James and Miss Richards resumed their original roles , with

Mr . Frank Archer as the baronet , Mr . Sugden as Talbot , Miss Fortescue as Mary , and Miss Lucy Buckstone as Violet Melrose . The second revival was at the Criterion in August , 1 SS 7 , with Mr . James again as Middlewick , and with Mr . Brandon Thomas as Sir Geoffrey , Mr . Giddensas Talbot , and Miss Rose Sakeras the " poor cousin . "

There died at Streatham , on Friday , the 7 th inst ., aged S 7 , Bro . Edward Baldwin , M . A ., formerly proprietor of the Morning Herald newspaper , and eldest son of Mr . Charles Baldwin , the founder , in 1 S 26 , of the Standard . Bro . Baldwin ' s connection with the Press belongs to a past generation , but in his time he played a prominent part in the newspaper world , and was an ardent supporter of the earlier policy of Lord Derby and Mr . Disraeli . In iSS 4 M .

Guizot , then Prime Minister of Trance , sent his portrait to Bro . Baldwin in recognition of his services to the French Government in connection with the mails to India . He was , with two exceptions , the oldest member of the Stationers' Company , having been elected in 1 S 24 , and one of the oldest members of the University of Oxford , having taken his degree in 1 S 23 . He was a Past Junior Warden of the Grand Lodge of England , and was connected with several Masonic Institutions .

The latest cry for "Home Rule" comes from Van Dieman ' s Land , where it has been arranged at a meeting of the Tasmanian Masonic Union to invite the lodges on the island to send delegates to attend a convention , to be held at Launceston , on the 20 th prox . The convention will consider the advisability of taking practical steps for the formation of a Grand Lodge .

The number of victims of the Llanerch Colliery disaster is stated as 176 , and the number of widows and children left unprovided for is 310 , of whom 70 are widows , and 240 children . The first meeting" of the Chiswick Lodge , after the installation of Bro . The entertainment we mentioned last week as having been held in aid of the Endowment Fund of the Albert Institute , Southwark , and as having" proved a great success , was organised by Bro . Alfred C . Greenwood , who is a brother of the Provincial Grand Secretary of Surrey , Bro . Charles Greenwood .

In a recent report of the Quarterly Court of the Boys School , Bro . Henry Smith was made to say that it was quite " possible " that the general body could sift the claims and qualifications as well as the Committee could . From the view taken of this question by Bro . Smith , as shown by the context , it is evident that the opposite was intended , and that it should have read "impossible . "

Bro . Deputy Goodmge has been elected Chairman of the City of London School Committee . The deputy is an old boy , and it is worthy of remark that he is the third representative of Aldersgate who has obtained a Corporation chair this year , the other two being Bro . A . J . At an examination for speed certificates , held at the London Phonetic Shorthand Writers' Association on the 30 th January , Mr . Bernard de Bear , of the Metropolitan School of Shorthand , London , successfully accomplished the task of writing from dictation 2000 words of ordinary newspaper matter in 10 minutes ( being at the rate of 200 words per minute ) , and afterwards correctly transcribing his notes .

Mr . B . de Bear has since been awarded a speed certificate for 200 words per minutes , and has also received , in commemoration of the event , a gold presentation watch , suitably inscribed , from Mr . Lord Egerton of Tatton is almost convalescent , but will remain indoors during the prevalence of the severe weather . Bro . the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon returned to their residence in Portman-square , from Highclere Castle , on Saturday last , and have since left for Porto Fino , their villa near Genoa .

At last week ' s soiree at the Lyric Club Lady Monckton and Miss Harriett Young's operetta , " Tobacco Jars , " was given , meeting with marked success . It had the advantage of being admirably sustained by Mr . Hirwin Jones , Mr . Frank Morton , Mdlle . Douilly , and Miss Emily Squire .

Bro . J . E . Shand , P . M . 1563 and Sec . 2030 , who has been suffering from the prevailing epidemic , is , we are pleased to hear , sufficiently recovered to be able to attend to his duties . The visit of Prince Albert Victor to India will be commemorated by the association of his name with several regiments of the Native Army , as was done after the visit of the Prince of Wales .

I he Queens wedding present to Miss Fitzroy on her marriage with Mr . Crutchley was of a singularly unique character . It consisted of a diamond pendant , containing a piece of her Majesty's hair . The Lord-Lieutenant and the Countess of Zetland visited the Royal Irish Academy on Wednesday . They were

received by the President , the Rev . Dr . Haughton , F . R . S ., and the members of the council , and were conducted to the library , where an address was presented to Lord Zetland . 'Their excellencies were accompanied by the Countess of Wicklow , Lady Newport , Lord Carysfort , Major Swaine , the Earl of Craven , A . D . C , and Major O'Shaughnessy , A . D . C .

One of the chief features of the matinee given by Miss Rosa Kenny at the Steinway Hall was her appearance , with Mr . Mowbray Marras , in the Helen and Modus scenes in "The Hunchback . " Both actors acquitted themselves very creditably . Miss Kenny also recited with much effect

After defraying the expenses of the statue of the late Earl of Iddesleigh , which has been erected in the Central Hall of the Palace of Westminster , a sufficient balance remained in the hands of the Committee to enable them to commission Mr . Long , R . A ., to paint a . replica of his wellknown portrait of Lord Iddesleigh . This has been presented on behalf of the subscribers to the trustees of the National Portrait Gallery , who have added it to the collection .

On Monday , the 27 th ult ., the brethren of St . John ' s Lodge , No . 65 , celebrated the anniversary of the birth of Burns in the lodge room , Bro . VV . Murray , R . W . M ., presided , and there was an attendance of about 30 members . A supper , of which a Scotch hasrgis formed a prominent feature , having

been partaken of , the usual loyal and patriotic toasts were proposed from the chair , after which Bro . Major VV . D . Innes proposed " The Memory of Burns , " which was drunk in silence . Toasts and songs followed , and a most harmonious evening was spent .

The present revival of "Our Boys , at the Criterion , is the third to which the piece has been subjected in London since the first famous " run " at the Vaudeville . The first revival was at the Strand , in June , 18 S 4 , when Mr . David James and Miss Richards resumed their original roles , with

Mr . Frank Archer as the baronet , Mr . Sugden as Talbot , Miss Fortescue as Mary , and Miss Lucy Buckstone as Violet Melrose . The second revival was at the Criterion in August , 1 SS 7 , with Mr . James again as Middlewick , and with Mr . Brandon Thomas as Sir Geoffrey , Mr . Giddensas Talbot , and Miss Rose Sakeras the " poor cousin . "

There died at Streatham , on Friday , the 7 th inst ., aged S 7 , Bro . Edward Baldwin , M . A ., formerly proprietor of the Morning Herald newspaper , and eldest son of Mr . Charles Baldwin , the founder , in 1 S 26 , of the Standard . Bro . Baldwin ' s connection with the Press belongs to a past generation , but in his time he played a prominent part in the newspaper world , and was an ardent supporter of the earlier policy of Lord Derby and Mr . Disraeli . In iSS 4 M .

Guizot , then Prime Minister of Trance , sent his portrait to Bro . Baldwin in recognition of his services to the French Government in connection with the mails to India . He was , with two exceptions , the oldest member of the Stationers' Company , having been elected in 1 S 24 , and one of the oldest members of the University of Oxford , having taken his degree in 1 S 23 . He was a Past Junior Warden of the Grand Lodge of England , and was connected with several Masonic Institutions .
