The New Deputy Grand Master.

THE NEW DEPUTY GRAND MASTER .

1 he Western Morning News has the following notice of the Masonic career of the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe : — "In consequence of the death ofthe M . W . Bro . the Earl of Carnarvon , the Pro Grand Master of Freemasons in England , and the appointment of the R . W . Bro . the Earl of Lathom , D . G . M .,

to that office , his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales , Grand Master , has had to fill the vacancy thus created . There has been no need to appoint any brother to the office of Deputy Grand Master , other than the Earl of Lathom , since the year 18 74 , and his lordshi p has occupied that exalted position from then to the Grand

Festival just held , having been re-appointed from year to year , according to custom , until a change has become absolutely necessary . " The choice of the Grand Master has fallen on the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , Provincial Grand Master of Cornwall since December 9 th , 1872 , though there are

11 senior Provincial Grand Masters , the oldest having acted from the year 1852 . His lordship vvas initiated in the Westminster and Keystone Lodge , No . 10 , London , in 1 S 56 , and it is somewhat remarkable that the Third Degree was conferred on him on the 20 th May , 1857 , in the presence of the then Grand Master

the Earl of Zetland , when the late Earl of Carnarvon ( Deputy Grand Master of England 1 S 70-4 ) vvas installed as the W . M . of that lodge . On June Sth , 1857 , the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe joined the Sincerity Lodge of Freemasons , No . 189 , at East Stonehouse , and on June 24 th , 1854 , vvas installed as its W . M . He became

a Warden of the Province of Devon in the same year , and on the decease of the R . W . Bro . Augustus Smith , vvas appointed as his successor to the Provincial Grand Mastership of Cornwall , the Installing Officer being the Rev . John Huyshe , for many years the genial Masonic ruler in Devonshire . There will be great

rejoicing in Cornwall , as well as in Devonshire , on this appointment becoming generall y known , for the new Deputy Grand Master is deservedly popular , Masonically and generally , in both counties , but naturally the Cornish Craft will rejoice most of all to see their own

Provincial Grand Master thus honoured by the Grand Master of England . The Earl of Mount Edgcumbe was duly installed as Deputy Grand Master by the M . W . Bro . the Earl of Lathom , Pro G . M ., at the Grand Festival held on Wednesday , as already announced in these columns . "

Princess Henry of Battenberg presided at a meeting held at the Hotel Metropole on Tuesday evening in aid of the Children ' s Country Fund , among those present being Lord Kilmarnock , vvho acted as Chairman , and Bros . Lord Carrington and Sir Frederick Milner , Bart ., M . P .

Bro . Lord and Lady Brooke , Bro . Lord and Lady Tweedmouth , and Bro . Sir Francis and Lady Knollys vvere among the guests at the dinner party given by the Austro-Hungarian Ambassador and the Countess Deym in honour of the Princess Mary ( Duchess of Teck ) , the Duke of Teck , and the Princess Victoria of Teck , on Monday .
