There was , of necessity , a deep feeling of sadness attending the consecration , on the 28 th ult ., of the St . Alban's Lodge , No . 2786 , which henceforth will hold its meetings under the shadow ofthe venerable Abbey , which perpetuates the memory of the founder of the

earliest lodge in Britain , formed , as tradition hath it , in the year 287 of the Christian era . Bro . Halsey , M . P ., Prov . G . Master of Hertfordshire , has himself invariably , when his parliamentary and other duties permitted , performed the ceremony of consecrating a new lodge in his Province , and as invariably has left

that of installing its first W . Master to be performed by his Deputy , and that arrangement was provided for in the agenda on this occasion . L ' nhappily , and to the sincere regret of all present , but especially of the Prov . G . Master and Prov . G . Treasurer , instead of the Deputy—Bro . George E . Like , P . G . D .

Englandarriving to fulfil his part , the sad news arrived that he had died quite unexpectedly only the day previous at Berlin . The mournful intelligence very naturall y had the effect of dimning the pleasure with which a new 1 jdge is always inaugurated , and though time did not permit of any alteration being made in the day ' s

arrangements , the P . G . M . and Bro . F . Sumner Kynvett , P . G . D ., Prov . G . Treas . —the latter of whom took , and has since been appointed to , the late Bro . E . Lake ' s office—left without sharing , as they otherwise would have done , in the festive part of thc proceedings . # # »

Bro . Lake , both personally and by virtue of his office , well merited this mark of respect for his memory . For the last 15 years he has been one of

the central figures in Hertfordshire Masonry , firstly , as Provincial Grand Secretary , and then , since 188 9 ,

as Deputy Provincial Grand Master . In the Provincial Grand Chapter he held the corresponding offices of Prov . G . S . E . and Prov . G . H ., and in the Provincial Grand Mark Lodge those of Provincial Grand Secretary and Deputy Provincial Grand Master . He was

esteemed and respected in the Watford and other lodges , chapters , and Mark lodges of which he was a member , and also throughout the Province generally ; and not only has the Provincial Grand Master to mourn the loss of one who , as he said in his reference to the event , was his " right hand man , " but the

Province likewise will sincerely regret the untimely death of a distinguished brother , who had won its affection and was ever ready , when occasion required , to do what lay in his power to promote its welfare . We tender our most sincere sympathy to the widow and famil y in the irreparable loss they hnve sustained .

+ * * As regards the ceremony of consecration , which was performed by Bro . Halsey with all his wonted impressiveness , we desire to call the attention of our readers to the very eloquent oration which was

delivered on the occasion by the Chaplain , Bro . the Rev . O . C . Cockrem , P . M ., P . Prov . G . Chap , of Notts and Herts , which appeared in the report of the proceedings we published in our issue of last week . It was ,

perhaps , somewhat longer than such addresses usuall y are , but its excellence as an exposition of the principles and objects of Freemasonry was recognised on all sides , and it was listened to with the utmost attention by those who had the privilege of hearing .

* « * We have been requested to announce that the Lord Kitchener of Khartoum Lodge , No . 276 7 , held a special meeting at the Ship Hotel , Greenwich , on Thursday , the 7 th inst , for the purpose of bidding farewell to Bro . J . H . Ireland , one of the principal

founders of the lodge and its esteemed Treasurer , who has been compelled by the state of his wife ' s health to leave the neighbourhood , to the great regret of the brethren and to the loss of the lodge . Bro . J . Cooper has been elected to succeed Bro . Ireland as the guardian of the lodge funds .

» * » The Committee of Management of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution held their regular monthly meeting at Freemasons' Hall on Wednesday , the 13 th instant , when the chair was taken b y Bro .

J . H . Whatcoat , J . P ., Patron , and a goodly amount of business was transacted . As we anticipated last week , a vote of condolence with the widow and famil y of the late Bro . John Newton , F . R . A . S ., P . G . P ., was passed

item , con ., after which the Committee dealt with the petitions —13 in number ( 9 male and 4 widows)—submitted for their consideration , the result being that all were approved , and the names ordered to be placed on the lists for the elections in May , 1900 .

» * » We have also to state that Bro . Whadcoat was unanimously elected to serve upon the House Committee of the Institution in place of the late Bro . Newton ; that the Seci etary reported the deaths of five male and two widow annuitants : that the applications of the widows

of two recently-deceased male annuitants for half their " late husbands' annuities were granted ; and that a letter was read from the Rt . Hon . Lord Addington Prov , G . Master of Buckinghamshire , altering the date of the Festival from Wednesday , the 28 th , to Tuesday , the 27 th February , 1900 .

» It is only three months since a new lodge was added to the roll of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Cumberland and Westmorland . A warrant has been granted by the M . W . Grand Master for one more , under the title of the Alston Lodge , No . 2794 , to be located at

the mining town oi that name , bordering on Northumberland . This makes the 23 rd lodge in the two counties . The consecration will be deferred until the return of the R . W . Provincial Grand Master from the Cape , whither his lordship and Lady Henry Bentinck sailed on Saturday last . They expect to be back in England by Easter .

The brethren of the Cambrian Lodge of Australia , No . 656 , Sydney , New South Wales , have presented very elaborately-illuminated addresses to ^ Bros . Richard Eve , P . G . Treas . ; S . R . Baskett , P . P . S . G . W . Dorset j

and W . F . Lamonby , P . A . G . D . C ., as an appreciation of their efforts in obtaining for the members of the lodge in question the recognition of their claim , right , and privilege to assemble and work as an Egglish Masonic body in that distant part of her Majesty ' s dominions .
