BRO . SAMUEL CHESTER . The mortal remains of the late Bro . S . Chester , J . P ., of Warrior-square and Marina , St . Leonard's-on-Sea , Sussex , were interred on Tuesday afternoon , the Gth inst ., at the Borough Cemetery , amid tokens of deep and general regret . Our departed brother held a high position in the town , in which he had been connected for a long series of years , and in the social circle in which he moved was highly
esteemed . Besides the family and relatives , there was a large attendance of friends , there being over forty carriages . The deceased was the oldest member of the Derwent Lodge , having been initiated in June , 1 S 53 , and a number of the brethren attended the funeral to pay their last mark of respect to his memory . The lodge was represented by the YV . M ., Bro . Councillor YV . H . Russell ; Bros . Councillor C . W . Duke , P . P . G . D ., P . M . 11 S 4 ;
John Pearce , I . P . M . ; F . Plowman , S . W . ; James Kenwood ; H . M . Baker , J . P . ; G . F . Wood , late Secretary ; J . B . Foord ; T . W . Markwick , J . P . ; H . J . Dawson , and others . There were also present His Worship the Mayor of Hastings , Mr . Alderman Thorpe , J . P . ; the Deputy Mayor , Mr . Councillor Revill , J . P . ; Mr . Councillor
Vaughan , and others . Bro . the Rev . E . F . Cave-Browne-Cave , M . A ., P . P . G . C , P . M ., very impressively performed the burial service . The coffin , which was of polished oak , bearing the following inscription : "Samuel Chester , died October 3 rd , 1 SS 4 . Aged 56 . " This inscription was , however , hidden by the magnificent wreaths and crosses of white flowers which literally covered the lid .
GOLD AND SILVER WYRE DRAWERS' COMPANY . The exhibit of the Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers ' Company , which is represented by Bro . George Kenning , in Old London , at the Health Exhibition , is thus descibed in the City Press , of Oct . 15 th : — "The Goli and Silver Wyre Drawers' Company could hardly have a better representative than Mr . George Kenning , of Little Britain and Aldersgate-street , who is not only a Past Master of the art
and mystery of wyre drawing , but an enterprising tradesman and manufacturer in other kindred industries . Mr . Kenning ' s exhibits have been selected with great judgment . The two looms at the rear of the shop , and the railed-off space in the centre for the embroiderers , represent the stage of manufacture . The contents of the case on the counter show the different kinds of wire after it has been drawn , while those of the wall case bear conclusive testimony
to the skill with which the work is turned out of the workshop . Of the looms , one is ancient and one modern , and those who are interested in the progress of invention will note with care the relative merits of the two machines , which are worked by young ladies clad in costumes appropriate to the time of ' Old London . ' " Two others are engaged in the more delicate kind of embroidery , and the skill with which they fulfill their part
is astonishing . The wires in the centre case are almost of an incredible degree of fineness , the gold wire here exhibited having been made from a rod of metal , weighing a quarter of a hundredweight , and having been drawn so finely that 2 , 600 yards of it are represented in troy weight by only a single ounce of the metal . Here also may be seen specimens of' purls , ' cards , laces , and embroidered badges . In the wall case are several magnificent specimens of Mr . Kenning's work , one of them representing the Prince of
Wales ' s arms and other tassels and scarves belonging to the degree of Royal Arch Masonry , and others the embroidered insignia of ecclesiastics . The grand Masonic apron , with its handsome and massive gold bullion and fringe is a facsimile of the one worn by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales in his capacity of Grand Master of the ancient Craft . Elsewhere may be seen the arms , insignia , and trophies of the company itself , which received its charter of ncorporation in the reign of William and Mary . "
PEARL LIFE ASSURANCE COMPANY . This is comparatively a young company , having been established some twenty years , but its business has fallen into good hands , and consequently it is already in a far more flourishing condition than many older companies standing , according to the official returns of the 11 G other companies for the last twelve years , " sixth on the list for rapid increase of Premium Income . " The figures ,
however , indicate far better still the progress which has been made . In 1 S 72 its Premium income was £ 9343 5 s . u £ d . ; it is now £ 142 , 164 is ., the increase over the whole term being upwards of £ 132 , 820 , and that of last year close on £ 16 , 000 . The new Policies issued durinsr the past year number 275 , 56 7 , and represent a new annual Premium Income of £ 104 , 791 iSs . 4 d . Of £ 272 , 426 15 s . nid . paid in claims and grants since the estabhshmentof the company ,
the sum paid last year was close on £ 46 , 944 . The assurance ance fund now amounts to £ S 9 , 4 S 6 4 s . 3 d ., and 1440 additional superintendents , assistants , and collectors have been engaged to fill vacancies that have occurred , and to conduct the company ' s business in newly-opened districts . These figures speak for themselves of the progress made by the Pearl Assurance Company , and we can only express the hope that a similarly successful future is in store for the Directors .
With the view of meeting ; the great addition of business anticipated when the sixpenny rate for telegrams comes into operation , four wires are being added to the west-coast system between England and Glasgow . TRUE FRIENDSHIP . — "Money can buy many things , both good and evil ; but all the wealth of the world cannot buy one genuine friend , and could not repay us the
loss of one . We are but foolish spendthrifts if we let one friend drop off through inattention , or let one thrust another aside , or if we hold aloof from one for petty jealousy or heedless slight . One good friend , or one true Masonic brother , is not to be weighed against the jewels of earth . Will you lose one because he is unkind or unjust to you ? Will you not remember your own failings and forgive him ?
If there come coldness or unkindness between you , do not revile him behind his back , but come face to face and have an explanation . Life is too short to quarrel in , or to carry black thoughts of friend or brother . Come together quickly before love grows cold ; clasp hands and let the past be , for a friend or brother is too precious to be lightly thrown aside . A new one will not come for the caiiing , nor make up for the old one if he does come . "

[ ADVT . ] HOLLOWAV ' PILLS are securities of health to all nations , of whatever clime . They have given hope , relief , and comfort to millions . In constitutions debilitated by excesses of any kind , or in general prostration of the system , their effect is tonic and restorative . They eradicate from the system the mortal causes of ailment , and renew in the frame its pristine animation , health , and viuour . Thev
greatly increase the appetite , give tone to the stomach , assist the digestion , and impart elasticity to the spirits ; their essence enters the circulation , and carried through its course exerts its cleansing power on every organ . In the lungs they effect most striking changes , converting the impure \ cnoas into pure arterial blood , by which the whole frame is recruited and interstitial deposits removed . —[ ADVTJ

LIBERALITY AND CONSERVATISM . — P . G . M . Bro . John W . Simons , Masonic editor of the New York Dispatch , and the Rev . Bro . A . F . A . Woodford , P . G . C , editor of the London Freemason , are each liberal and conservative , but after a different manner—that is to say , where the one is liberal the other is conservative , and where the other is conservative , the one is liberal . For
example : Bro . Woodford is liberal enough to justify the reception of applicants for initiation who are physically ineligible according to Bro . Simons' views ; while Bro . Simons is liberal enough to advocate the public installation of lodge officers , contrary to Bro . Woodford ' s confirmed
opinion . Neither one of these eminent brethren is truly conservative in these particulars , according to our understanding . We would have neither public installations of lodge officers nor fragmentary men , physically made Masons . Brethren beloved , pool your issues , and both of you come over and j ' oin us . —Keystone . Guess not . — J . W . S .

—Keystone . Guess not . — J . W . S .
