at the present tune was very much to the front , must enlist the sympathies of the brethren of the province over whom he reigned , and to whom he vvas so much endeared . They in the Province of Cheshire knew , and he ( Bro . Cookson ) as a Past Provincial Grand Treasurer more especially knew how careful Lord Egerton vvas in the administration of funds with vvhich he had to deal , and how strongly he
desired efficiency with economy . I he brethren therefore would readily understand what a source of trouble and anxiety the recent developments of the Ship Canal must have been to their esteemed Provincial Grand Master . In addition to the Past Masters already named , there were present Bros . John Slack , John Knott , and VV .

Personally he vvas greatly pleased that an exaltee of the
chapter , and by no means an old member , had had the patience and zeal to master the ritual in so able a manner . His occupancy of the chair at the banquet table had also been characterised by kindness and liberality . Comp . Salter , in his brief reply , said that the Immediate Past Principal had spoken too highly of his poor services . He had done his best under the circumstances . He had neither the time nor the memory to carry out the duties of
the chair in a manner to please himself , and had he not had the assistance of several of the Past Principals he believed that he should have failed entirely . In consequence of the lateness of the hour the other toasts vvere quickly given and briefly acknowledged . In the intervals of the toasts Comps . G . Everett , Lundie , G .
