manner in vvhich the toast had been given and received . He would promise the brethren for the trust reposed in him he would do his utmost for the lodge , and emulate the first W . M ., Bro . Wells . He vvas convinced he should receive the hearty co-operation of all the brethren , which would be to promote to the best of his ability the prosperity of the lodge .

1 he next toast vvas that of "The I . P . M . and Installing Master . " Of the I . P . M . the VV . M . stated that he vvas a most estimable brother of 25 years' standing , and most worthy to follow , and he hoped to succeed as well as he had . Of Bro . Hunt , the Installing Master , he would state the ceremony had been worked most admirably , and the brethren thanked him exceedingly for the valuable

services he had rendered , and especially in the lodge of instruction , where he vvas most assiduous in his duties . In reply , the I . P . M . stated he vvas gratified at the position of the lodge , and for the valuable assistance he had had during the past year from Bro . Hunt , P . M . He vvas heartily thankful for the handsome jewel that had been awarded him , and which he trusted he might wear for many

years to remind him of the very pleasant year he had spent in the lodge as its first Master . He might mention the able assistance he had received all through the year , and also in the founding of the lodge from the W . M ., Bro . Compton , and for which he tendered his best thanks . Bro . Hunt , P . M ., in a few appropriate remarks , said he vvas grateful for the kind expressions towards him . He

would state that he was always ready and most willing to do all he could for the lodge , and he invited all the brethren to come to the lodge of instruction on Wednesday evenings , ¦ where they would be heartily welcomed . He had been well repaid by their applause . The toast of " The Visitors " vvas given in high terms by the Worshipful Master and most cordially received by the

brethren . The W . M . said he trusted to see them on many future occasions , and he hoped the hospitality they had received would be accepted as heartily as given . The toast was replied toby Bros . Manger , Stone , VVilson , and Day , who one and all congratulated the W . M . on such a lodge and for the hearty welcome accorded them . "That of "The Officers" vvas most ably put by the

Worshipful Master in high terms of praise , and replied to by them pledging themselves to emulate those worthy brethren before them and would do all to keep up the prestige of the lodge . The musical arrangements vvere ably carried out by Bro . Day , efficiently assisted by Bros . Deering , Birch , and Pain .

The Tyler ' s toast brought a most enjoyable meeting to a close .

P ., Walker , and Rowbottom respectively , the address to the VV . M . being triven by Bro . Jackson , P . P . G . D . of C , to the Wardens by Bro . Whitehead , P . P . G . D ., aud to the brethren by Bro . Walker . The following officers were

M ., who had held the office of Treasurer for 12 years , and who had resigned on account of his health not being sufficientl y good to enable him to da the duties as he would like . The address was signed by the Past Masters and officers . Bro . Fielding gracefully acknowledged the gift .

Lodge was opened , and the minutes of last meeting read and confirmed , after vvhich Bro . Brown , jun ., vvas raised to the Degree of a M . M . Bro . B . Thomas vvas unanimously elected VV . M ., Bro . F . Wood , P . M ., vvas unanimously re-elected Treasurer ( 27 th year ) , and Bro . A . Martin was unanimously re-elected Tyler for the ensuing year . Lodge vvas afterwards closed , and the brethren adjourned to refreshment .

STOCKPORT . Lodge Of Concord ( No . 323 ) . —The installation festival of this lodge vvas celebrated on Wednesday , thegth inst ., at the Florist Hotel , when Bro . E . Stevens , the W . M . elect , was inducted in the chair of K . S . by Bro . H . Howard , P . M ., P . P . G . D ., and it goes without saying that in the capable hands of this veteran Craftsman the

ceremony vvas most efficiently rendered , and afforded great pleasure to the members and visitors present , who numbered about 40 . Bro . T . Brookes , P . P . A . G . D . C , another old Past Master of the lodge , invested the officers as follows Bros . A . Horton , S . VV . ; H . Newton , J . W . ; VV . Pritchard , P . M ., P . P . A . G . Sec , Treas . ; T . Brookes , Sec ; W . Walmsley , S . D . ; Wm . Woods , J . D . j J . A . Penny ,

M . presented the I . P . M ., Bro . J . O . Wylde , with a gold Past Master ' s jewel , vvhich the brethren had subscribed for in recognition of his services during the past year . The Charity representative of the lodge , Bro . Joseph Slack ,

P . M ., P . P . S . G . D ., brought before the notice of the lodge the matter of the Jubilee Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , vvhich is to take place next year , and gave notice of motion for a grant in its behalf from the lodge funds . Bro . Herbert Finch , P . G . Registrar , who vvas present as a visitor , on behalf of the Provincial Grand Secretary , unavoidably absent , explained the special

privileges held out by the Institution in respect of double votes , & c , and urged the lodge to send up one or more Stewards to the Festival . After business the brethren adjourned to a most recherche banquet . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts vvere duly honoured , that of "The VVorshipful Master" being received with

much enthusiasm . Bro . H . Howard , responded to the toast of "The Installing Master , " and Bro . James Cookson , P . P . G . Treas ., to that of "The Provincial Grand Officers . " Bro . Cookson to k occasion to remark that the Provincial Grand Master's connection vvith that great undertaking , the Manchester Ship Canal , vvhich

at the present tune was very much to the front , must enlist the sympathies of the brethren of the province over whom he reigned , and to whom he vvas so much endeared . They in the Province of Cheshire knew , and he ( Bro . Cookson ) as a Past Provincial Grand Treasurer more especially knew how careful Lord Egerton vvas in the administration of funds with vvhich he had to deal , and how strongly he

desired efficiency with economy . I he brethren therefore would readily understand what a source of trouble and anxiety the recent developments of the Ship Canal must have been to their esteemed Provincial Grand Master . In addition to the Past Masters already named , there were present Bros . John Slack , John Knott , and VV .

Jerusalem Chapter ( No . 185 ) . — This old chapter met at Freemasons' Tavern , Great Queen-street , on the Sth instant . Among those present were Comps . E . H . Harris , M . E . Z . ; Hardy , H . ; F . Smith , P . Z ., P . P . G . J . Cheshire , J . ; G . Davis , VAL ., S . E . ; Rivers , S . N . ; Harfeld , P . Z ., Treas . ; Frye , P . S . ; Capt . Walls , P . P . G . P . S . Middx ., P . Z . ; N . Moss , L . C . C , P . Z . ; Eliiborn ,

PAL . ; Cleghotne , P . Z . ; Staley , P . Z . ; Kimpton , I . P . Z . ; and Mallett , P . Z . 1 C 23 , janitor . Among the visitors were Comps . Carey , 179 ; Biggs , 975 ; Bullock , 1471 ; and E . Rogers , 1642 . The minutes of the previous convocation having been read and confirmed , the ballot vvas taken on behalf of Bros .

William Blankley , 1298 , and Frederick John Bath , and it being unanimous , they were ably and impressively exalted by the M . E . Z . The chapter was closed . The customary banquet then took place . Upon the removal of the cloth the long routine of toasts followed .

The I . P . Z . gave "The Health of the First Principal " in lluent terms . He congratulated Comp . Harris upon the excellent manner in which he had performed the arduous ceremony of exaltation , and vvhich work vvas he said alike creditable to the M . E . Z . and to the chapter . The M . E . Z . having modestly replied , gave "The Second and Third Principals , " to which toast Comps . Hardy and

Smith responded in suitable terms . "The Exaltees" followed , and drew from Comps . Blankley and Bath eloquent replies . Comps . Carey , Biggs , Bullock , and Rogers , in acknowledging "The Health of the Visitors , " spoke in high commendation ofthe working and hospitality of the chapter . Comp . Kimpton responded on behalf of "The Past

Principals . " The M . E . Z ., in giving "The S . E . and Treasurer , " said in the course of his remarks that the services of those two companions could not be too highly praised . Comps . Davis and Harfeld having replied , the toast of

' I he Officers " terminated the proceedings . During the evening Comp . E . Smith , assisted by his talented son , Mr . F . P . Smith , and daughters , Madame Munns and Miss F . Smith , gave a vocal and instrumental concert of great merit , vvhici charmed and gave unqualified satisfaction to all present .

Kennington Chapter ( No . i 38 i ) .--This prosperous transpontine chapter met for the dispatch of business at the Horns Tavern , Kennington Park , on the 3 rd inst ., when there were present , among others , Comps . H . Salter , M . E . Z . ; VV . A . Dowling , H . j E . Ayling , P . Z ., acting J . ; H . Higgins , P . Z ., P . P . G . D . C , S . E . ;

Wilkinson , 1679 , who had been duly

balloted for , vvas ably exalted to the Degree of the Royal Arch by the First Principal . Comps . H . J . Lardner , P . Z ., P . P . G . Std . Br ., and A . E . Austin , J ., sent apologies for non-attendance . The chapter having been duly closed , the companions adjourned to the banquet , vvhich was admirably served by the genial and courteous host , Comp . Buxton .

The usual loyal and Royal Arch toasts vvere duly honoured . Comp . George Everett , Grand Treasurer , replied on behalf of "The Grand Officers" in an effective speech . Comp . Westley proposed " The M . E . Z . " Inthe course of his pertinent remarks he congratulated the First Principal upon the success that had attended that day's proceedings . Personally he vvas greatly pleased that an exaltee of the

chapter , and by no means an old member , had had the patience and zeal to master the ritual in so able a manner . His occupancy of the chair at the banquet table had also been characterised by kindness and liberality . Comp . Salter , in his brief reply , said that the Immediate Past Principal had spoken too highly of his poor services . He had done his best under the circumstances . He had neither the time nor the memory to carry out the duties of

the chair in a manner to please himself , and had he not had the assistance of several of the Past Principals he believed that he should have failed entirely . In consequence of the lateness of the hour the other toasts vvere quickly given and briefly acknowledged . In the intervals of the toasts Comps . G . Everett , Lundie , G . Gardner , Bailey , and Ayling vocally entertained the companions . The executive are to be congratulated upon the success that attended the proceedings .

The lodge vvas opened in the Second Degree . The ceremony of installation being announced , Bro . Steele took the chair , with Bro . Evans as candidate , and performed the first portion of the ceremony

rehearsed . Ihe lodge was opened in the Third Degree , and the rest of the ceremony performed , the addresses being given by Bro . Steele , and the officers invested by Bro . Evans . The ceremony of passing being announced , and Bro . Lyell having answered the usual questions , was entrusted . The lodge was resumed to the Second Degree

, and Bro . Lyell duly passed to the Degree of a F . C . The lodge vvas resumed to the First Degree , and the VV . M . rose for the first time , and the dues were collected . The W . M . rose for the second time , and Bro . Sandals was elected VV . M . for the next meeting . The W . M . rose for the third time , and the lodge vvas closed .

Pullen candidate . The ist Section of the Lecture was worked by Bro . Hilton , P . M ., assisted by the brethren . Ihe lodge was opened in the Third Degree , and Bro .

Hooper rehearsed the ceremony of raising , Bro . Hayes candidate . The lod ge vvas resumed in the First Degree . The W . M . rose for the first time , and Bros . Hayes , Barr , and li . T . Clarke vvere elected members . Bro . Rice , S . VV ., vvas elected VV . M . for the next meeting . A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Bro . Beecroft for so ably rehearsing the Second Degree , being the first time in this lodge of instruction . The lodge vvas then closed .

Read expressed his thanks to those brethren who had assisted him vvith their votes for the Board of Benevolence . After "Hearty good wishes" the lodge was closed .

He might mention the able assistance he had received all through the year , and also in the founding of the lodge from the W . M ., Bro . Compton , and for which he tendered his best thanks . Bro . Hunt , P . M ., in a few appropriate remarks , said he vvas grateful for the kind expressions towards him . He

would state that he was always ready and most willing to do all he could for the lodge , and he invited all the brethren to come to the lodge of instruction on Wednesday evenings , ¦ where they would be heartily welcomed . He had been well repaid by their applause . The toast of " The Visitors " vvas given in high terms by the Worshipful Master and most cordially received by the

brethren . The W . M . said he trusted to see them on many future occasions , and he hoped the hospitality they had received would be accepted as heartily as given . The toast was replied toby Bros . They in the Province of Cheshire knew , and he ( Bro . Cookson ) as a Past Provincial Grand Treasurer more especially knew how careful Lord Egerton vvas in the administration of funds with vvhich he had to deal , and how strongly he

desired efficiency with economy . I he brethren therefore would readily understand what a source of trouble and anxiety the recent developments of the Ship Canal must have been to their esteemed Provincial Grand Master . The I . P . Z . gave "The Health of the First Principal " in lluent terms . He congratulated Comp . Harris upon the excellent manner in which he had performed the arduous ceremony of exaltation , and vvhich work vvas he said alike creditable to the M . E . Z . and to the chapter . The M . E . Z . having modestly replied , gave "The Second and Third Principals , " to which toast Comps . Hardy and

Smith responded in suitable terms . "The Exaltees" followed , and drew from Comps . Blankley and Bath eloquent replies . Comps . Carey , Biggs , Bullock , and Rogers , in acknowledging "The Health of the Visitors , " spoke in high commendation ofthe working and hospitality of the chapter . Comp . Kimpton responded on behalf of "The Past

Principals . " The M . E . Z ., in giving "The S . E . and Treasurer , " said in the course of his remarks that the services of those two companions could not be too highly praised . Comps . Davis and Harfeld having replied , the toast of

The usual loyal and Royal Arch toasts vvere duly honoured . Comp . George Everett , Grand Treasurer , replied on behalf of "The Grand Officers" in an effective speech . Comp . Westley proposed " The M . E . Z . " Inthe course of his pertinent remarks he congratulated the First Principal upon the success that had attended that day's proceedings . Personally he vvas greatly pleased that an exaltee of the

chapter , and by no means an old member , had had the patience and zeal to master the ritual in so able a manner . His occupancy of the chair at the banquet table had also been characterised by kindness and liberality . Comp . Salter , in his brief reply , said that the Immediate Past Principal had spoken too highly of his poor services . He had done his best under the circumstances . He had neither the time nor the memory to carry out the duties of

the chair in a manner to please himself , and had he not had the assistance of several of the Past Principals he believed that he should have failed entirely . In consequence of the lateness of the hour the other toasts vvere quickly given and briefly acknowledged . In the intervals of the toasts Comps . G . Everett , Lundie , G . Gardner , Bailey , and Ayling vocally entertained the companions . The executive are to be congratulated upon the success that attended the proceedings .
