UNITED MARINERS AND VITRUVIAN LODGES OF INSTRUCTION .

An evening party of the members of the United Mariners and Vitruvian Lodges of Instruction , Nos . 30 and 8 7 , was held on Wednesday , the 9 th inst ., at the Bridge House Hotel , London Bridge , under the presidency of Bro . W . H . Bale , P . M . 87 . Nearly 100 ladies and gentlemen sat down to the banquet . The usual loyal

toasts vvere proposed by the CHAIRMAN and duly honoured , the only other toast being that of "The Ladies , " vvhich was responded to by Bro . EEDLE , P . M . 30 . The company afterwards adjourned to the ball room , where dancing vvas indulged in till a late hour . An excellent concert was provided for those who did

not care for dancing , it being opened by a duet , ' It is the hour for music , " abl y rendered by Bro . and Mrs . Norrington . Bro . Arthur Weston sang " My sweetheart when a boy" and " Last watch" in his well known style . Bro . Scarborough gave " The sailor ' s

grave" and " Mona , and Bro . W . Rogers sang Oh , oh , hear the wild winds blow " and " Queen of the earth . " Madam Thomas gained a well-deserved encore for her rendering of " Caller Herrin ' . " A recitation by Bro . Gooding was also greatly admired .

v "THE OLD MASONIANS . " The second invitation concert of the season ( ladies ' night ) was given by the above Association on Friday last at Anderton ' s Hotel . Bro . J . M . McLeod , Secretary R . M . I . B ., presided , in the unavoidable absence of the President , Bro . Lieut .-Col . Geo . Lambert , P . G . S . B . Amongst the visitors vvere Bros . Geo . Everett , Grand

Treasurer ; Jas . Stephens , W . M . 753 ; Capt . Walls , P . M . 141 ; H . Price , P . M . 177 ; and E . Smith , P . M . 2308 . A varied programme vvas presented , and carried through vvith much talent . The hall was well filled with an appreciative audience . Miss Uwins sang

"When the heart is young and Good-bye witn much taste ; Mrs . Collinson added to the pleasure of the evening by her spirited singing of "Beauty ' s Eyes " and " Shall we our glass forego" ; and Miss Blanche Dunnett played a fantasia on Welsh airs in an effective manner . The sentimental songs of Messrs . C .

O'Doherty , H . Pickett , and Auckland Branwell were all well rendered and greatly applauded . Although not on the programme , Bros . Jas . Stephens and Captain Walls sang a song each , whilst the comicalities of Messrs . C . H . Uwins and A . B . Whiteley in their humorous impersonations created roars of laughter .

Bro . R . H . Williams' finished elocution vvas heard to advantage in his two contributions . Mr . E . A . Gough ' s recitation was well received , and Mr . A . J . Ryrnan was again the accompanist . At the conclusion of the evening , Mr . R . S . CHANDLER ( Hon . Sec ) , in proposing a

vote of thanks to the Chairman , expressed the great pleasure it had given the Old Masonians to be presided over by Mr . J . M . McLeod , and trusted he would honour them on many future occasions . Mr . Chandler concluded his remarks by impressing upon his hearers the benevolent objects of the Association .

The CHAIRMAN , in reply , said he had been very pleased to have had the opportunity ot coming amongst the Old Masonians , and if it was in his power to further their objects in any way he would not fail to do so . He took a most hopeful view of the Association , and prophesied much useful work for it in the future .

Mr . E . A . GOUGH , in a lew appropriate words , proposed a . vote of thanks to the artistes . Mr . C . H . UWINS , in his reply , drew attention to a concert to be g iven in the beginning of next year in aid of the Benevolent Fund ot the Association , in which they would have the support of many professional friends . He trusted that all the friends of the " Old Boys " would rally round them .

A Committee of some of the oldest business houses who are warrant holders to the Prince of VVales has been formed for the purpose of presenting a suitable gift to the Duke of Clarence and Avondale on the occasion of his marriage .

THE KRASNAPOLSKY RESTAURANT AND WINTER GARDENS . —An extraordinary innovation has just been made in the ordinary matter of dining accommodation for London by the establishment of the Krasnapolsky Restaurant in Oxford-street , vvhich vvas opened on Monday last to the genera ! public . The name given to it is that of the managing director who has gained

a great reputation on the Continent , the other directors are gentlemen of position and experience , while the Secretary , Bro . J . Davis , is well known in connection vvith similar enterprises . We think vve cannot do better than quote the following description of the building from the Architect : After entering the portal , where some artistic oak woodwork meets the eye , vve enter the capacious and lofty

Winter Gardens , abounding vvith palms and various other plants , and our attention is drawn to the elegantlydesigned mosaic vvhich has bean executed by Messrs . Diespecker , of Holborn . There is also a fountain here and other adornments . In the gallery above , access to which is gained by means of two staircases , is a handsomely fitted-up restaurant , while the abundance of

surrounding mirrors will doubtless serve to reflect many a gay and festive scene . A beautifully-executed white marble fountain will be observed in the gallery , where there is also a buffet and a recess , vvhich latter may serve for a reading room or other purpose .. The large central dome above is fitted vvith a sliding roof , and all the ironwork in connection therewith has been executed by the St . Pancras Ironworks

Company , and incidentally it may be mentioned that the decorative ironwork throughout the building has been executed by Mr . P . Schryvers , of Brussels . Adjoining the before-mentioned restaurant are the capacious kitchens , to vvhich new lifts have been affixed by Messrs . Smith and Stevens . Proceeding to the second floor , we enter the magnificent banquet room , which has been superbly

decorated , and abounds vvith fine oak carving . Adjoining thereto are two other dining rooms of less dimensions , which have a comfortable and cozy apearance . These rooms are eminently adapted for the entertainment of Masonic lodges as well as private parties . Descending to the basement , a very fine and luxurious billiard room is discovered , in which six tables by Burroughs and Watts

will be placed , so that the votaries of the game , whose name is legion , can indulge therein to their hearts content . The dado work here has been executed by Messrs . J . Aird and Sons , who take credit also for the marble steps leading to the billiard roo-n , while the painting vvas done by Michael Hendricks , of Amsterdam . Adjoining is a large vacant space right under the winter garden ,

vvhich can be utilised at any future time for such purposes as may be desired . The wine cellars , whose capacity as may be well imagined is enormous , vvill be found in close proximity . But vve hasten to enter the boiler and engine rooms , which are also , of course , in the basement , and vvhich are fitted in a manner that cannot fail to awaken admiration . For here vvill be found two 30 horse-power

boilers by Robey and Son , and two 20 horse-power by Kuston , Proctor and Co ., together with three engines of 30 horse-power each , also by Huston , Proctor and Co ., and all , as may be supposed , of first-class quality . In close proximity are three dynamos and switch-boards , vvhich have been supplied by Messrs . Crompton . It may be added that no vibration is experienced there , thanks to the

lead and cocoa-nut matting which have been laid down . Ihe work in this department has been ably carried out under the superintendence of Mr . Hartmann , the consulting engineer . Abundant and well-fitted lavatories' exist in the building * , and there is a lift from the ground floor to the top that will admirably serve the intended purpose , lt only remains to add that the capacious building is lilted throughout internally

and externally in the best possible style , and to Messrs . Wenham and Waters credit is due not only for the electric wiring and fittings , but also for the heating and plumbing vvhich has been done by them right throughout . The builders , it may be mentioned , are Messrs . Higgs and Hill , who have doneall the rough construction and woodwork . The elegant decoration and the plasterwork in connection with

the banqueting and adjoining dinmg rooms have been executed by Mr . Allan Chambun , of Brussels . 1 he architect over all vvas Mr . J . Springer , of Amsterdam , whose representative on the work was Mr . J . A . Van Voorthuysen , and they are to be complimented for the general excellence of the whole work , both in the design and internal decoration .

Brief and imperfect as is this descriptive notice , it may yet serve to give some idea of an institution which seem :, likely to be a centre of attraction , and to have a prosperous career before it , having regard to the elaborate manner in vvhich the directors have gone to work , who , if they do not command success , at least thoroughly deserve it .

The steel ship Enterkin ( 1548 tons ) of Glasgow , bound from Hull to Brisbane with a general cargo , struck on the Galloper Sands , off Ramsgate , on Saturday night last , and became a total wreck , her crew of 29 men and a Channel pilot being all drowned , vvith the exception of an apprentice , who vvas rescued by the smack Brkon ' s Pride , and landed in Ramsgate on Monday morning .
