SECONDS AND YEARS ; TIME'S MYSTERY .

IJ ^ AKLY one summer morning a few years ago five men , roped together , were ascending the Weisshorn—two gnides , one at either end of the rope , and three English tourists between . Stepping in-cautiously on a snow surface which covered an

icy slope , the leading guide fell and started an avalanche . Buried in the rushing mass the party descended 2 , 000 feet , when their night was arrested by rocks at the edge of a precipice . Two were killed .

"How long were you in making that slide ? " said I to one of the survivors . "By an estimate , fifty seconds , " he said ; " by my feelings , a hundred years . "

We talk about time ! Why here is a healthy child asleep in his crib . To him the long night is merely nothing . Here is a soldier with a shattered leg waiting for the busy surgeon . To him , it is what ? Eternity .

" My sufferings , " writes a lady , " continued over five years ; I cannot describe them . "

" In the autumn of 1887 , " she adds , owing to the strain on my system through nursing my husband when he had rheumatic fever , I fell into a low state of health . I had no relish for food of any kind , and after eating I had intense pain at my chest , and through to my back .

" My hands and feet were cold and clammy ; in fact , I felt cold and starved in every part of my body . My system was completel y relaxed and unstrung . My throat was sore all the time , and my hearing was dull .

" I consulted a doctor and he gave me medicines , but they had no good effect so far as I could perceive . He said I was suffering from nervous debility , and perhaps he was right . But this I know , however—that after spending pounds of precious money

"i doctoring I was badly off as ever . " I kept about my household duties , for women must work as W ° H as weep . But it was a hard and tedious thing , and otteii I hud to lie down on the couch for a little rest .

" Sometimes a trifle better and again worse , my sufferings continued over five years . What I was dragged through during that terrible period I cannot describe . " I was never free from pain , and for a great purl <;/ ' the linn I tuns in agonies of pain .

"In November , 1892 , I read that Mother Seigel ' s Curative Syrup had cured cases like mine . Whether these accounts were true or not I could not tell ; but they sounded like the truth , and appeared to be from people who would not be guilty of deceiving others who were in like manner afflicted .

" At all events I trusted to them , and my sister , who lives at Farnham , sent me a supply of this medicine . At first I experienced no sensible benefit from it ; but my disease was of such long standing that I thought I ought to persevere . When
