vincial Grand Master as Lord Brooke , as during the time he had presided over the province Freemasonry had flourished in Essex , notwithstanding the depressed state of agriculture , and the organisation that existed with regard to the votes for the Masonic Charities so as to secure success to any Essex candidate , was not to be beaten by any province in the kingdom . It was the little Province of Essex

that demanded the investigation into the management of the Boys' School , and when through that inquiry matters were put on a more satisfactory basis , the Provincial Grand Master took the chair this summer at the Boys' School Festival held at Brighton , and , as a proof of the popularity of Lord Brooke among Masons all over the kingdom , the sum of , ( , 23 , 000 was raised on that occasion for the Charity .

Bro . Dudgeon , P . M ., responded for the province , and proposed " The Health of the W . M ., " which was received with cheers . After the Worshipful Master ' s reply , he proposed the toast of " The Visitors , " which was responded to by Bro . Pascall , of the Hammersmith Lodge , who said he had visited the Tilbury Lodge several times , and hoped to come

again , as he always felt at home , the right hand of fellowship being extended to him by every member of the lodge from the W . M . downward . On the Worshipful Master proposing " The Health of the Officers , " he stated the lodge had reason to be proud of its officers , as all were such enthusiastic Masons , even going to the extent of weekly meetings to make themselves

perfect in their work . He coupled with the toast the name of Bro . Buttery , S . W ., who , in responding , thanked the W . M . for his encouraging remarks , and said that they were endeavouring to learn their work in the hope that when each came to the

chair they might emulate the example shown by the W . M . During the evening some excellent singing was given by Bros . Buttery , Thompson , and Wingrove , Bro . Wilfred Davies officiating at the piano . The whole ot the brethren expressed their opinion that a most pleasant and successful meeting had been held .

SUNDERLAND . Londonderry Lodge ( No . 2039 ) . —On Monday , the 2 nd inst ., the annual meeting of the above lodge was held at the Masonic Hall , Park-terrace , for the installation of the W . M . and investment of officers for the

Hutchinson , whose term of office had been exceptionally successful .

Bro . Hutchinson , in responding , said he had endeavoured to do what he considered to be his duty to the lodge , and was pleased he had given such satisfaction to the brethren generally . Other toasts followed . The jewel was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning .

M . then drew the attention of the brethren to the Masonic service , which had been

postponed until the 12 th of November , and expressed a wish that the Grand Officers , Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , and the brethren generally would honour him with their presence . The Worshipful Master , Bro . J . Hirdwickc-Marsh , said it was the annual custom of the members of the Urmston lodge to have a ball in December , and would be pleased to hear of some brother proposing

a in iMcal entertainment , were unanimously passed . The Third Principal gave a notice of motion to apply for the chapter's sanction to form a chapter of improvement , to be named the Jerusalem . The convocation was then closed , and the members adjourned to the banquet . Upon the removal of the cloth , the customary toasts

followed . Comp . N . Moss , P . Z ., gave "The M . E . Z . " He said that they all regretted the absence of Comp . Smith , one of the oldest and most respited members of their chapter . He could only say that their First Principal was a good , kind man and a worthy Mason , who he trusted would be soon able to come amongst them again . Of the acting

M . E . Z ., he could say that he , like Comp . Smith , was a very old and appreciated member , and had performed the duties of Treasurer for many years past most efficiently . Comp . Harfeld , in reply , said he felt somewhat neivous and diffident that evening , because he had not taken any chair in a chapter for upwards ot 20 yeirs . He loved the old Jerusalem Chapter , because he had spent so many

happy hours therein . Comp . Mosshidspoken very kindly of him , and the companions had drunk his health very warmly in his capacity of Treasurer miny times , ln conclusion , he would say what he had said miny times in the past—that the interests of the chapter would be his interests tilt time with him should be no more . Comps . Hardy and Cleghorn responded for " The Past

Principals" and Comp . G . DJVIS for "The S . E . and Officers . " The companions then settled down for two hours to enjoy an excellent programme of music , generously furnished by Comp . F . Smith , and in which several members of his talented family and friends took part , the violin selections being particularly admired and re-demanded .

TEDDINGTON . Sir Charles Bright Chapter ( No . 1793 ) — The 13 th convocation of this chapter was held on Wednesday , the nth inst ., at the Clarence Hotel , when , owing doubtless to the exceedingly wet night , there was but a

small number of companions present . Tne usual ' routine bus ness was gone through , after which the companions adjourned to the banquet . The usual toasts were proposed , and duly honoured . The companions adjourned at an early hour .
