IT IS SAID that the Lords of the Admiralty intend commissioning a flotilla of four torpedo-boat destroyers for service in the Mediterranean . It is understood that they will be stationed at Malta for instruction purposes .

LORD MAYOR , Sir Walter Wilkin , has very kindly accepted the invitation of the Committee of the City of London General Pension Society to preside at their 77 th annual festival , which will be held on Tuesday , the 24 th prox . A MEETING OF the Board of Governors of Dulwich was held on Monday , when Lord Justice Davey was elected Chairman of that body in succession to the lite Rev . Piebendary VVilliam Rogers , who held the appointment for many years .

THE QUEEN , accompanied bv the Princess Christian , left Osborne upon the conclusion of her visit to the Lie of Wight on Thursday afternoon , and having crossed the Solent on the Royal yacht to Gosport , travelled by special train to Windsir , where she arrived about 6 p . m . THERE ARE grounds for believing that it is contemplation to omit the customary banquet by the Royal Academy on the Saturday preceding the opening of the Exhibition , cut of respect to the memory of the late President , Lord Leighton . Special invitations , however , will be issued to view the pictures privately on the day in question .

D ., Archdeacon of Middlesex , on Saturday , the 15 th instant , at 5 p . m ., an [ appropriate service , appointed by the Archdeacon , being held en the occasion . On the following day the Vicar " read himself" in at the afternoon service at 4 p . m .

IADV BALFOUR OF BUFLUGH distributed the battalion prizes . to the London Scottish Volunteers at their headquarters , Buckingham Gate , on Monday , when in spite of the ungenial weather there was a good muster of the regiment . Bro . Lord Balfour of Burleigh acknowledged the vttc of thanks passed by acclamation to her ladyship for her kindness in attending . After the distribution there was a concert , in which the regimental pipers took a promient part .

THE GUILDHALL SCHOOL OF MUSIC COMMITTEE , at their meeting on Monday , tcok into censidt ration the reference from the Ccurt of Common Council respecting the vacarcy in the office of Principal of the School , caused by the death of Bro . Sir J oseph Barnaby . After considerable discussion the subject was referred to a Sub-Committee , and it vvill probably be some weeks before the Corporation will be able to proceed to election , lt is considered that the new Principal ' s salary will be the same as the late Bro . Sir J . Barnaby received at lhe time of his death , namely , jCiooo per annum .

ATFRRIULE FIBE cccurted eaily on Sunday morning last at a house in Churchstreet , Snho , by vvhich no less than eight persons were burned to death , while a ninth , who threw himself Irom a second-floor window , sustained such injuries that he has since died in Charirg Cross Hospital . The cause of the fire is said to be unknown , but it is ttlievtd that it oiignatcd ficm a paraffin lamp . Another fatal lire occurred at a house in Chapman's Gardens , Bethnal Green , lhe cccupsntof the premises , a Mr . Freder ' ck Ritla , being so fearfully burned , that he was removed to the hospital , where he died shortly afterwards .

ACCORDING TO THE Irish Times , a sei icus accident occurred to the Hon ; Fredk . H . S . Roberts , son of Bro . Field-Marshal Lord Roberts , V . C , on the nth instant . A hunter was being exercised in the grounds of Mr . Bryne , horse-dealer , at Mill Town , near Dublin , to which Mr . Roberts took a fancy , and , having obtained permission to mount it , he put it at a fence . The horse , however , over-jumped itself , and Mr . Roberts was pitched upon his head , sustaining severe concussion of the brain . The following day he was taken , in a still unconscious state , tothe Royal Hospital , Kilmainham , where he vvas attended by Surgeon Wheeler , and subsequently regained partial conscijusness . We trust that Mr . Roberts will not suffer seriously from the accident .

RRIBLE OCCURRENCE happened at Santarem , about 50 miles from Lisbon , on Tuesday evening , when a fire broke out at the Artists' Club while a masked ball was being held , and a panic ensued . TO-MORROW ( SATURDAY ) the 100 th performance of the pantomime , "Cinderella , " which has been played twice every day uninterruptedly since Boxing Day , will take place at D .-ury Lane Theatre . A RAILWAY OFFICER ' J UBILEE . —Bro . George Abbott , P . M . 192 , the district superintendent ot the South-Eastern Railway at Chiring-cross and Cannon-street , entered on his 50 th year of service on Monday last . During this long period , Bro . Abbott has filled every grade in the coaching department . Wnen thi Cannon-street terminus was opened in September , iS 65 , he was appointed stationmaster , and he his ever siac ; occupied that position . BURMANS AT THE CRYSTAL PALACE . —The directors of the Crystal Palace hive arranged , as one of the principal attractions of the oaiing season , a Burmese Village . It was only after much persuasion that the troupe of males and females consented to leave their country . They come from various parts of Upper and Lower Burmah , and have brought with them materials for a number of Burmese houseswhich they will erect

, in the Palace . Within these they will each ply their several avocations illustrative of the chief industries of Buimah . An entertainment will also be given , which will include a Burmese play , singing , dancing , juggling , marionette performance , football as it is played in the streets of Burmah , ins : rumental music , & c . Another fatal lire occurred at a house in Chapman's Gardens , Bethnal Green , lhe cccupsntof the premises , a Mr . Freder ' ck Ritla , being so fearfully burned , that he was removed to the hospital , where he died shortly afterwards .

ACCORDING TO THE Irish Times , a sei icus accident occurred to the Hon ; Fredk . H . S . Roberts , son of Bro . Field-Marshal Lord Roberts , V . C , on the nth instant . A hunter was being exercised in the grounds of Mr . Bryne , horse-dealer , at Mill Town , near Dublin , to which Mr . Roberts took a fancy , and , having obtained permission to mount it , he put it at a fence . The horse , however , over-jumped itself , and Mr . Roberts was pitched upon his head , sustaining severe concussion of the brain . The following day he was taken , in a still unconscious state , tothe Royal Hospital , Kilmainham , where he vvas attended by Surgeon Wheeler , and subsequently regained partial conscijusness . We trust that Mr . Roberts will not suffer seriously from the accident .
