Presentation To Bro. James Lewis Thomas, F.S.A., P.A.G.D.C.
f the lodge , and as his old friend , Bro . Thomas , had been instrumental in introducing him into Masonry it was very gratifying to him to be called upon to make the presentation . After speaking in glowing terms of Bro . Thomas ' s many great services to the lodge three pieces of massive silver plate and an illuminated address , vvhich
ontained the names ofthe donors and the following words , in old English letters , urrounded by an elaborate and beautifully-executed foliated scroll border : "This I to record the presentation to Bro . J . Lewis Thomas , F . S . A ., P . A . G . D . C , of some silver p late by the members of the Granite Lodge , No . 1328 , whose names are inscribed below , as a mark of their appreciation of his valuable services as Secretary to the lodge during a period of 23 years . "
Bro . THOMAS who spoke under great emotion , said that he very much appreciated the beautiful token of affectionate regard for their old Secretary which Bro . West had just presented to him , on their behalf , in words of eulogium which were far too lavish . It was true , as had been stated , that he was one of the founders of the lodge , alas 1 almost the only one lett . It was also true that he had been their Secretary for 23 years , and had taken the warmest interest in its welfare but it was a labour of love , which he had endeavoured to carry out with
truth and earnestness . He expressed his thanks to the W . M . for the kind words he had used , and for the many acts of brotherly friendship he had received during his year of office . He thanked Bro . West most sincerely for his eloquent speech and for his co-operation during the many years they had been colleagues in office ; and , above all , he thanked Bro . Mason , the I . P . M ., for his kindly and friendly feeling towards him at all times , and especially in his active kindness in initiating and promoting that splendid outward and visible sign of the faith they all had in
their old Secretary ; but he must stop , for if he enumerated every one from whom he had received during his long career kindly assistance and great forbearance , he should have to name all the Past Masters and every brother in the lodge . Suffice it to say , that to one and all he tendered his hearty and most cordial thanks , for in whatever station or office a man was placed which required the
performance of important duties , the sympathy and appreciation of his fellows save him the greatest aid and encouragement in the faithful and efficient discharge of those duties , and he trusted that for some years to come the Great Architect of the Universe would spare him in health and strength to continue to give his best services to the Granite L odge as Secretary , should the Worshipful Masters in the future consider him worthy of that honourable and important office .
