ROMFORD . —Chapter of Hope and Unity ( No . 214 ) . —This old chapter held a convocation on the 7 th inst . at the White Hart Hotel , when therewere present Comps . J . S . Fraser , M . E . Z . ; Fred Adlard , H . ; G . Wallace , J . ; K . J . Barrow , Past G . S . B ., P . Z ., Treas . ; G . Cooper , P . Z ., S . E . ; C . li . Davison , P . Z . ; Col . W . J . Burgess , P . Z . ; G . Cowell , P . Z . ; W . W . Brown , P . Z . ; F . W . Imbert-Terry , Dr . W . B . Stirling , and F .
B . Page . The chapter having been opened in due form , the M . E . Z . alluded in feeling terms to the death of Comp . Dr . O'Connor , who died on the previous Monday under very sad circumstances , and proposed that a letter of condolence be sent to his widow . Comp . C . T . Speight having at this meeting completed 25 years of service as Janitor , a handsome gratuity was presented to him by the companions .
Four brethren were elected , one of whom , Bro . r . B . Page , was in attendance , and was very ably exalted by the M . E . Z . The proposition that the chapter be removed was carried unanimously . In an exhaustive speech , Comp . Imbert-Terry pointed out that this chapter is essentially a summer one , and that to meet in Romford does not offer any inducement to the companions to attend , especially those members who reside in London . Furthermore , he had every reason to believe that the Provincial Grand
Chapter of Essex would next year be held under the banner of the Chapter of Hope and Unity , and they could not properly accommodate that body at Romford . He felt sure that by removing to the Castle , Woodford , or the Royal Forest Hotel , Chingford , it would add to the continued prosperity of the chapter , the comfort of the companions , and would receive the approving sanction of the Grand Superintendent . All business being ended , the companions adjourned to a banquet admirably served .
YORK . —Eboracum Chapter ( No . 1611 ) . —An emergency meeting of this chapter was held on the 4 th inst . at the Eboracum Masonic Hal ) . Amongst those present were Comps . G . Simpson , Z . ; T . A ballot was taken for several candidates , after which Bros . T . Masterman , T . Horsley , R . Kersopp , and Rev . R . Blakeney were duly exalted by the M . E . Z ., the mystical lecture being given by Comp . Whytehead , P . Z . Subsequently the companions met to the number of over 20 at an excellent supper , when the usual toasts were duly i honoured .

years ago to take office , he then determined to devote what time and attention he could to all branches of Freemasonry in Jersey , and the more he knew of their excellent institution the more he appreciated and valued it . The tenets of the Order were to him sacred . A day or two ago he chanced to come across the following exposition of Freemasonry , in a work by Dr . Arnold , which so appropriately expressed his own viewsthat he would repeat the words to
, the brethren . They were— "Freemasonry opens a new Temple , and erects a new altar above all prejudice , and distentions , and selfishness—a Temple dedicated to friendship , love , and truth , where men of all parties are taught to lay aside their differences and their hypocrisy , and meet on the common ground of truth and charity . Our lodges are the asylums of peace and love ; political or religious disputes cannot enter there ; and within their peace-inspirwalls
ing men of all shades of opinion meet as brothers , ' and bind themselves by solem n vows to fulfil the Christian law of love , and to do good to all men , as they had opportunity or ability . There may the lone wanderer , weary and discouraged in his march of friendshi p , find repose in sympathising and loving hearts . Unity , love , and friendship are the very objects it seeks to promote . Masonry not only embraces all the excellences of other societies , however noble and good , but it goes far beyond them . It
asks that not only that justice be done , it demands friendship and love . Thus it towers above them all , stands preeminent in beauty and splendour , as the bright moon around a heaven of stars . " Such was his creed , and he hoped and trusted it would be so with many members of the Craft in Jersey . Several Grand Lodge communications were read at the leisure intervals , and no other business offering , the lodge was closed in due form and adjourned in perfect harmony until the following Wednesday .

All business being ended , the companions adjourned to a banquet admirably served .

years ago to take office , he then determined to devote what time and attention he could to all branches of Freemasonry in Jersey , and the more he knew of their excellent institution the more he appreciated and valued it .

He also
