The Great Pyramid And Freemasonry.
THE GREAT PYRAMID AND FREEMASONRY .
On Wednesday , the 6 th inst ., Bro . A . T . Matthews , P . M . 1703 , P . P . G . S . D . Oxon , delivered a lecture on the above interesting subject before the brethren of the Windrush Lodge , 1703 , Witney . Of late years much enquiry and speculation have been directed to the mysterious
structure , whose meaning has so long remained an inscrutable riddle . Bro . Matthews divided his subject into two parts , which he called " Facts " and " Parallels , " showing by the latter the intimate connection between the Craft and the Pyramid . Of course the details of the arguments advanced cannot be given here , for obvious reasons , but as regards the " facts " the speaker was enabled to secure the earnest
attention of the brethren , while he gave them an account of the size , height , and mathematical problems furnished by the extraordinary relative dimensions of the building , together with some startling allusions to its sacred and prophetic character . The time which could be allotted to the task in open lodge forbade anything like a full treatment of such a vast and abstruse subject , but Bro .
Matthews contrived to give a general outline of many of the leading geometrical and astronomical problems presented to the student of pyramid lore . Amongst those treated were the due orientation ; the earth commensurability with the inch and cubits as units ; the sun's distance ; the squaring of the circle ; the doubling of the cube ; the time of building as shown by the position at a certain time
of the Pole star , A . Dracoms , and the Pleiades , with reference to the precession of the Equinoxes , and several other points of great interest to thinking Masons . The chronological meaning of the passages and chambers were treated of as fully as time would permit , the various points being followed with keen interest by a highly intelligent and appreciative audience , who rewarded the lecturer at the close of his address by a hearty vote of thanks .

BRO . THE MARQUIS OF AILESBURY . We regret to learn that Bro . the Marquis of Ailesbury died very suddenly on Tuesday at his seat , Savernake House , near Marlborough . The noble lord was in his 7 6 th year , havingbeen born Sth January , iSn . _ He was educated at Eton and Trinity College , Cambridge , and had sat in the House of Commons from 1 S 32 till his accession to the Marquisate in 1 S 7 S . He was a Lord of the Bedchamber to William IV ., Grand Patron of the Order , from
December , 1834 , to April , 1 S 35 , and Vice-Chamberlain to the Queen 1841-4 ( 3 , and again 1852-5 S . The noble Marquis had Tieen a subscribing member of the Westminster and Keystone Lodge , No . 10 , since 1862 , and was exalted in the Westminster and Keystone Chapter on the day of its consecration—the 18 th April , 1 S 64—but his duties do not seem to have allowed of his taking an active part in our Masonic labours . He is succeeded in the title by his grandson , Viscount Savernake , born 1863 .
BRO . CHARLES GODTSCHALK , P . M ., P . Z ., & c . All who knew Bro . Charles Godtschalk , and especially his Devon brethren , will feel unfeigned regret at the news of his death . The deceased had for some two or three years past been afflicted with paralysis of the brain , and his worldly circumstances had been equally sad , so much so indeed , that in December last his name was submitted , and
accepted , as a candidate for election on the Male Fund of the Benevolent Institution , and in May he was fortunate enough to secure the annuity of £ 40 for life , which is provided for its members by that Fund . His enjoyment , however , of this relief from thc stress of narrow means has been very brief . On the 10 th instant a change for the worse took place , he became unconscious , and in a few
hours had passed away , his funeral taking place in Lancaster Cemetery on Thursday , the 14 th inst . Our late brother was initiated in thc Dundas Lodge , No . 1255 , Plymouth , on the 14 th July , 1870 , and remained a subscribing member till December , 1 SS 4 . In 187 G he was installed VV . M ., and for many years had acted as representative of the lodge on the Charity Committee of Devon . He was also a member for upwards of eight years of St . John's
Lodge , No . 70 , Plymouth , having joined it in November , 1 S 7 C , during his Mastership of his mother lodge , and had received the collar of a Prov . G . D . of Devon . He was Z . of the Dundas Chapter , No . 1255 , in 1 S 76 , VV . M . of the Fortitude Mark Lodge , No . Go , Plymouth , in 1875 , and a P . P . G . D . C of that Degree in Devon , and a P . E . Preceptor of the Royal Veterans' Preceptory and Priory of Malta , Plymouth . For many years he had acted as the London Charity Representative of the Province of Devon , and had

taken the chief part in the conduct of the elections on behalf of his province . He was also a Vice-President of our Boys' School and Benevolent Institution , and a Life Governor of the Girls' , and , in addition , had served three Stewardships for the Benevolent , two for the Boys ' , and one for the Girls' Institutions . With such a record as this before us , it will be generally acknowledged that Bro .
Godtschalk during the 14 years of his active Masonic career had done good suit and service , and had his health remained unimpaired and his life been prolonged , there is small reason to doubt that he would have continued those services with , if possible , increased zeal , and we feel assured with still more conspicuous success . We offer our tribute of sincere sympathy to the relatives , friends , and Masonic associates of our late brother in their present sorrow .
BRO . R . H . GIRAUD , P . G . S . D . Death seems to be rapidly thinning the ranks of our senior dignitaries , and to the long array of deceased worthies whose memoirs we published only a week or two since must now be added that of Bro . Richard Herve Giraud , a Mason of . 62 years' standing , and Grand Senior Deacon of 1853 ^ Bro . Giraud was initiated
in Grand Master ' s Lodge , No . 1 , in March , 1824 , and having seved the office of W . Master in 1829 , was some few years later elected to the Treasurership of the lodge , an office to which he was annually re-elected , and which he held till the time of his death . He also represented No . 1 oa the Board of Grand Stewards in 1826 , and served as Secretary of the Board . On the 19 th March , 1828 , he
became a member of the Grand Stewards' Lodge , and in the years 1 S 34 and 1835 presided over its fortunes as W . Master , in which capacity he occupied the chair in the latter year at the celebration of the 100 th anniversary of its constitution . He was exalted to the R . A . Degree in the Prince of Wales Chapter , No . 259 , on the 3 rd February , 1 S 26 , and was installed its M . E . Z . in 1859 , having in the
meantime , however , been appointed by the late Earl of Zetland as G . S . Deacon of Grand Lodge , and Grand Sword Bearer of Supreme Grand Chapter in 1853 . During the present year he was installed the first W . M . of the Huguenot Lodge , No . 2140 , and was chosen Treasurer of the newly-founded Grand Master ' s Chapter , No . 1 , both these bodies being largely indebted to his exertions as one
of the founders for their Constitution . This , by comparison with the records of other worthy brethren , must seem a brief one ; but if brief in respect of the number of appointments he may have held , it was by nomeans uneventful . Bro . Giraud , from the time of his initiation till his death , was active in all worthy Masonic pursuits . He does not seem to have desired to multiply his offices of distinction
so much as to fulfil scrupulously and conscientiously the duties of the few he was privileged to occupy . It must be remembered also , to his infinite credit , that during the whole of his long career he was engaged in rendering valuable services to our Institutions . We find him helping Bro . Crucefix in his scheme for establishing the Asylum for Aged Masons . From 1 S 41 to 1 S 64 he was honorary solicitor
to the Boys' School , and in 1850 and 1851 was amember of the Committee of Inquiry , of which the late Bro Rowland G . Alston was Chairman , to which our English Craft is indebted , in the first instance , for the development of what was then only an institution for clothing and educating the sons of deceased and indigent Masons , and afterwards for its conversion into a high class boarding school . During
all the twenty and three years of his solicitorship he gave his services gratuitously to the School , and so high was the opinion entertained by the Governors and Subscribers of the value of those services , that they conferred upon him the rank and privileges of a Vice-President . He held a similar office , and performed like duties , in aid of our Girls ' Schoolhis valuable help being in this instance
, also recognised by the bestowal on him of an honorary Vice-Presidency . As a member of a Huguenot family he took a deep interest in all that concerned the welfare of that community , and it is not surprising that , when a few months ago the question arose of establishing a lodge in connection with it , he should have been invited to assume the responsibility of becoming its first Worshipful Master .
But Bro . Giraud ' s good works were not confined within the limits of our Society . He was constant in doing good to all who needed the kindly help of a worthy and respected man , his most successful sphere of duty having been in connection with the French Protestant Hospital in London , of which , at the time of his death , he held the important office of Deputy-Governor . With this Institution he had been continuously associated from the year 1829 . Thus , by
the death of Bro . Giraud we lose not only a veteran brother who had been a member of our Order for upwards of three score years , but one likewise who had made it the business of his whole Jife , both as a man and a Mason , to try and assist his'fellow creatures , but especially those among them ¦ who through the caprices of Fortune were in distress or indigent circumstances . May the memory of his good deeds flourish ever like the green bay tree of the sacred Psalmist !
BRO . E . TURNER PAYNE , The funeral of the late Bro . E . Turner , Clerk to the Bath Magistrates , and to several local bodies , took placeon Monday last , the interment being made in Bathwick Cemetery in the presence of a numerous gathering of magistrates , town councillors , members of the legal profession , citizens , and brethren . At twelve o ' clock the first portion of the burial service was gone through , the clergy
present being the Rev . James Dunn , vicar ; Revs . George Tugwell , rector of St . Mary ' s , Bathwick ; P . E . George , and T . Jesson . Behind the mourners were a number of city magistrates , headed by the mayor , who carried a floral cross . Then came several members of the Bath branch of the English Church Union , of which the deceased was a
prominent member . The Town Council was strongly represented , and so likewise were the Royal Cumberland and the Royal Sussex Lodges , and the Lodge of Honour , of Bath ; arid the Royal Albert Edward , of Weston ; and the Prov . Grand Lodge of Somersetshire , Bro . R . C . Else , P . G . D ., D . P . G . M ., being the foremost P . G . Officer .

He was Z . of the Dundas Chapter , No .
