English Masons who retain their allegiance to the Constitution . | ust prior to the illegal dealing with the charter of the Cambrian Lodge of Australia , No . 656 ( E . 9 28 ] ANOTHER FREEMASONS' POCKET COMPANION .
Recently I have obtained for my library ( through Bro . Hughan ) another of these " Companions , " which I do not remember to have seen chronicled previously , It is entitled "The Free Masons Pocket Companion , . . . Glasgow ; Printed by Robert and Thomas Duncan , and sold at their Shop , Pope ' s- Head Salt- Market ,
M , DCC , LXXI . " It appears to be a reprint , or another edition ( or vice versa ) ot the Pocket Companion issued the same year at Glasgow also , which was " Printed for Peter Tait , James Brown , and John Tait , Booksellers , M , DCC , LXXI . " I am inclined to believe they are precisely the same book , with different
titlepages , but have not a copy of the latter . My notes made during an examination of the copy in the British Museum ( 4784 a ) indicate that the list of English lodges in Tait ' s Pocket Companion commenced at page 196 , which agrees with that in the work now noted as printed by Duncan . I am confirmed in this opinion ,
because both have the sime curious typographical error , viz ., the Lodge No . 61— " Rose in Cheapside " —( appearing in its proper position between Nos . 60 and 62 ) . is printed in both editions 91 . The list is numbered consecutively to 141 , which , however , vvas really
No . 156 , of 17 th March . 1737 , so that its value as a list in 1771 w . i-i practically useless . 1 shall be glad to hear at a-iy time of any printed or engraved lists or pocket companions , & c , not enumerated in my " Hand y Book . " . JNO . LANE .

M ., completed a very effective rendering of the installation ceremony by delivering the usual addresses . Routine business having been transacted , the lodge vvas closed , and an excellent banquet was afterwards enjoyed .
The usual toasts were subsequently heartily proposed and received , the speeches being- interspersed with musical selections by Miss Ada Patterson , Miss Amy Martin , and Mr . George Adams . Bro . Col . Peters , P . G . S . B ., returned thanks for " The Grand Officers , " and said they one and all did their best to further the interests of Masonry . The purple which he and
his worthy Bro . Hogard wore vvas conferred for services rendered in connection with the Craft , and it would be a great pie isure to find that a member of that lodge was selected for a similar honour . He vvas sorry not to have arrived in time to see the VV . M . installed into the chair he so worthily filled . Every time he visited the lodge there seemed greater unanimity among the members , and the
banquet that evening had been , if possible , better than ever . Bro . F . Burgess , P . G . Stwd ., I . P . M ., said he approached the next toast with a considerable amount of trepidation . As they were aware , he was suffering from hoarseness , and it was difficult to proceed , so that he hoped they would exercise their forbearance . It had been with the greatest
difficulty that he had been able to get through the work , and they would no doubt excuse him from making a long speech . The toast he wished to propose was " The Health , Happiness , and Long Life of the esteemed VV . M . " It needed no eulogy From him , for Bro . Langridge was well known and endeared to every member for his kindness of heart , generosity , and open heartedness . The vV . VI . had
provided them with a charming musical entertainment , and therefore he ( the I . P . M . ) could not do better than abbreviate his speech , and afford the artistes an opportunity of displaying their talents . Bro . H . Langridge , P . G . Stwd ., VV . M ., thanked the I . P . M . and brethren for the cordiality with which the toast had been received , and said that when a brother vvas called
upon to be VV . M . of so well known , so old , and so exalted a lodge—for every year they added one to the number of officers of Grand Lodge , and therefore it was an exalted lodge—he could not but feel that he had a great deal to do , and that he should be pleasant and agreeable to all . and show himself to be a Mason and a man . That he might do so was his hope , and at a later date they would be better
able to express an opinion than on the present occasion . He thanked them for anticipating what he trusted to prove himsef to be . The Worshipful Master next gave" The I . P . M . and Past Masters , " and said he ought to have given a special toast for the I . P . M . as Installing Master , for when one went to the enormous pains and trouble the I . P . M . had done he
deserved a special recognition , but Bro . Burgess , with the humility always associated with intelligence and kindness , had said he did not want more speechmaking than he could help . It was absolutely necessary in giving the toast of the Past Masters to specially couple the name of Bro . Burgess , who had well earned from everv member the utmost praise . He could not but give the I . P . M . his personal expre _ . sion of
opinion that he had done all he could to advance the lodge in its working , and had at all times sacrificed his personal comfort for its welfare . Bro . F . Burgess , P . G . Stwd .. I . P . M ., in reply , said he had hut few words in which to express his gratitude for the kindly remarks m ide , although he vvas afraid he vvas
not worthy of them . He had endeavoured during his year to fulfil his task to the best of his ability , and he trusted he had partially succeeded in doing it to their satisfaction , lt had lieen a labour of love , and he only wished a greater portion of work had fallen to his lot . He had to return them the thanks of the P . M . ' s for the kindly manner in which the toast had been received .
Bro . ] . Fernandez , VV . M . elect Drury Lane Lodge , replying for 'The Visitors , " said he thought it best to copy the W . M ., and at once rise on the spur of gratitude to return thanks . On behalf of the visitors he thanked the brethren for the compliment paid them and for the warmth and cordiality of their fraternal greetings . He echoed the thoughts of all in saying they felt delighted and gratified to
be present , and so delighted were they that they would carry away such pleasant recollections of the admirable working of the lodge . He thanked the I . P . M ., to whom he owed his presence that evening , and must say that he vvas prepared to see some excellent working on Bro . Burgess ' s part , for he knew how well he performed everything he undertook , but his expectations were surpassed . The
l . P . M . ' s work was admirable , and vvas a lesson for him ( Bro . Fernandez ) to try and do as well . Recollection and anticipation filled up the whole of their being , and one of the more pleasant among his Masonic recollections would be the pleasant time he had spent in the St . Albans Lodge , and one of his e 'ger anticipations would be of the time when he should again be their guest .
Bro . P . Waterlow , S . VV ., speaking , on behalf of "The Officer-, " said they would do all in their power to make the W . M . ' s year as brilliant as possible . The splendid working which the I . P . M . had set them must be an incentive to all to endeavour to do that portion which fell to their lot as well as their power could attain to . He believed that every brother who entered Masonry should have an ambition in
front of him , and if that ambition—as Colonel Peters had remarked—should be to become a member of the purple , he should endeavour to do all he could in whatever branch of Masonry to attain such qualifications as might induce those at the head of Grand Lodge to appoint him . The Tyler ' s toast then closed a very pleasant and enjoyable evening .

Steele , said that the lodge had done very well in electing so able a brother to fill the chair . He had watched his very careful and earnest work as an officer , and vvas sure he would do the work as well as any of the able Masons who had before occupied the chair . Bro . Steele , VV . M ., said he was most delighted to be able to fill that position . It vvas a proud day for him . He
should do his very best to deserve the confidence placed in him , and be a credit to the lodge . In proposing " The Visitors , " the VV . they had had a most able Master in Bro . C . Fleck , and one of whom they were proud . He had great pleasure in pining on his coat the jewel of I . P . M ., which had been presented to him by the lodge . He hoped he might very long wear it . Bro . C . Fleck responded , thankmg the brethren for their confidencein him .
