TRANQUILITY LODGE ( No . 185 ) . — This lodge held the fifth meeting of the present year on Monday , the 19 th inst ., at the Guildhall Tavern , Gresham-street , E . C , Bro . Stailey , the W . M ., presiding . Considering that no banquet was expected , it is creditable alike to discipline of the lodge and thc earnestness of the members that upwards of 40 brethren attended . Two gentlemen were

initiated . After lodge , refreshment was served , and it being what is technically known as " off night , " the authorities permitted a certain amount of laxity , much more enjoyable than the stiff and ceremonial etiquetle observed on banquet nights ; at least , so it appeared , judging by the sprightliness which distinguished the conversational flow right and left and across trie board . Several toasts were given and

heartily received , more especially the one eloquently submitted by Bro . T . VV . C . Bush , I . P . M ., referring to the W . M ., who cannot fail to be gratified with this proof of popularity , tor his name produced quite an ovation . A case of severe distress having been made known by Bro . John Ross , P . M ., £ 10 ios . were collected within ten minutes among the brethren at the table , in addition to £ 3 3 s . already ordered by the W . M . from the lodge fund .

SPHINX LODGE ( No . 1329 ) . —The installation meeting of this prosperous lodge took place on Saturday last at the Masonic Hall , Camberwell New-road , when a foodl y gathering assembled to do honour to the incoming laster , Bro . Andrew Middlemass , P . M . The lodge was opened fairly punctually ( though in this respect great need of improvement exists among our worthy Brotherhood generally ) , and the needful routine business transacted .

Touching allusions were made to the great loss sustained by the lodge in the premature and regretted death of Bro . Richards . The ceremony of installation was then proceeded with by Bro . Nairn , P . M ., who proved himself to be truly a ' * Master of the Craft . " The Board of Installed Masters having been opened , Bro . A . Middlemass , P . M ., was duly installed in the chair of K . S . Bro . Middlemass then invested his officers , accompanying each investment with

Masonic and pithy addresses alike , which were much appreciated by a full hall . The ceremonial was greatly aided by the introduction of an appropriate anthem and very suitable hymns . Among the numerous company we noticed Bros . Woodford , P . G . C ; Cottebrune , P . G . P . ; James Terry , P . P . G . W . Herts ; C Dresser Rogers , P . Ms . Bickerton , Nairn , Bickerstaffe , Mansell , and Edmonstone ; Bros . Mercer ,

Hammond , Seymour Smith , and many more . A very comfortable and pleasant banquet followed a most effective lodge gathering , and though , owing to the lateness of the hour , the speeches were very short , they were not the less effective . Among those who spoke were the VVorshipful Master , Bros . Woodford , Cottebrune , Jas . Terry , C . D . Rogers , Manseli , and others . We left a very at

hospitable company perforce 11 . 15 , and therefore we cannot give a full account of all that took place at this very successful meeting ; but we can properly record our sense of a most kindly reception , of the intellectual enjoyment afforded by admirable work and most harmonious arrangements , and , above all , express our sincere and hearty good wishes for the Sphinx Lodge , in which , we feel sure , all the numerous visitors will most heartily join .

EARL OF ZETLAND LODGE ( No . 1364 ) . — The installation meeting of this flourishing lodge was held at the lodge room , Old Town Hall , Hackney , on Saturday , the 17 thinst . Present : Bros . B . Humphrey , W . M . ; J . Percy Fitzgerald , S . W . , * Green , J . W . ; R . A . Wright , Treas . ; E . 1 . Anning , Hon . Sec ; Hegarty , S . D . ; Pope , J . D . ; H . Lowe , I . G . ; and Cooper , W . S . ; and several visiting brethren amongst whom we noticed Bros . E . Buckland

and McLean , Asaph Lodge ; Paget , Kent Lodge ; and others . The minutes of last lodge having been duly read and confirmed , the W . M ., Bro . Humphrey , expressed his sincere regret that owing to ill health he had been advised by his medical adviser not to undertake the labour of installing his successor , which under these circumstances Bro . Cockett , P . M ., had undertaken to perform . Bro .

J . Percy Fitzgerald , the W . M . elect , was then duly presented and was installed by Bro . Cockett into the chair of K . S . in a masterly manner , the addresses being given b y him with a most impressive and dignified delivery . The VV . M . then invested his officers for the ensuing year as follows : Bros . Green , S . W . ; Hegarty , J . W . ; E . Wright , Treas . ; E . J . Anning , Hon . Sec ; Pope , S . D . ; Lowe , jun ., J . D . ; J . F . Haskins , Org . ; Cooper , I . G . ; Kuttner

and Chamberlain , W . Ss . ; W . E . Gompertz , P . M ., D . of C . ; and Goddard ( re-elected ) Tyler , The resignation , through failing health , of Bro . H . T . Lowe , P . M ., D . C . for many years of this lodge , was received with expressions of sincere regret by the lodge , and , on the motion of Bro . Cockett , P . M ., the honorary membership of the lodge was conferred on him for his pastservices , and avoteof thanks , to be engrossed on vellum , was also directed to be presented to him , in testimony of the high esteem in which he had

been held by the brethren . In the course of the evening the newly-installed W . M . initiated Mr . Edward Albert Da Cunba into the mysteries of Freemasonry . The brethren afterwards dined together at the Guildhall Tavern , when the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and honoured . The banquet arrangements , under the direction of Messrs . Ritter and Clifford , were all that could be desired , and the musical part of the proceedings , conducted by Bro . Haskins , Org ., in which Bro . G . Buckland , took part , gave universal satisfaction .

THE GREAT CITY LODGE ( No . 1426 ) . — The monthly meeting of this lodge , the second one of the present session , was held on Saturday evening , the 10 th inst ., at the Cannon-street Hotel , but was very thinl y attended . Bro . Frederick T . C Keeble , W . M ., presided , and was supported by Bros . W . Baber , S . W . ; Fendick , J . W . ; Rev . F . W . Potter , S . D . ; N . B . Headon , P . M ., Treas . ; G . W . Bro . Henry Dottridge , having previously undergone an examination , was passed to the Degree of a F . C , the ceremony being well performed by the W . Master . The ceremony was afterwards repeated by the request of the W . Master of the Lebanon Lodge , No . 1326 , and Bro . J . C . Goslin received his second step in Freemasonry . On the resumption of the lodge to the First Degree , Bro .

Hamer , P . M ., said he wished to bring under tbe notice of the lodge the melancholy and sudden death of an eminent City man , a brother Mason , and one who had been a visitor to their lodge on several occasions . Bro . Felton had occupied the position of Chairman of the Commissioners of Sewers of the Corporation of London , and at the termination of his year of office had retired with the respect

of every one of its members ; and he had held other important offices in the City . He was also a Past Master of the Cripplegato Lodge , No . 1013 , and of the Victoria Lodge , No . 1056 , and was highly esteemed by all . His death was a very sudden one , for he was well and hearty in business one day in the City , and the next he was no more . His funeral had been attended by many of his

City associates , and also by members of the lodges to which he belonged , and he thought that as Bro . Felton was well known to the members of the Great City Lodge they would agree with him in paying a tribute of respect to his memory . He proposed "The members of the Great City Lodge , in open lodge assembled on Saturday , the 10 th of November , 1 SS 3 , desire to express their

fraternal sympathy with the brethren of the Cripplegato Lodge , No . 1013 , and the Victoria Lodge , No . 1056 , on the great loss they have sustained by the death of their respected Past Master Bro . George Matthew Felton , C . C , who was so well known and held in such high esteem in the City , and that this resolution be entered on the minutes of the lodge , and that a copy of it be sent to the two lodges

respectively . " Bro . N . B . Headon , P . M . and Treasurer , seconded the motion , which was put and unanimously agreed to . The case of a distressed brother was brought under the notice of the lodge , and a very liberal sum was voted to him . The case of a widow of a deceased member was also

brought forward , and was deferred for further consideration . The Worshipful Master announced his intention of representing the lodge at the next festival for the Boys ' School , and asked the members to support him upon that occasion . There being no further business the lodge was closed .

Mercer ,

G . ; and Cooper , W . S . ; and several visiting brethren amongst whom we noticed Bros . E . Buckland

and McLean , Asaph Lodge ; Paget , Kent Lodge ; and others .

C . for many years of this lodge , was received with expressions of sincere regret by the lodge , and , on the motion of Bro . Cockett , P . M ., the honorary membership of the lodge was conferred on him for his pastservices , and avoteof thanks , to be engrossed on vellum , was also directed to be presented to him , in testimony of the high esteem in which he had

The brethren afterwards dined together at the Guildhall Tavern , when the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and honoured . The banquet arrangements , under the direction of Messrs .
