Owing to the gratifying reception accorded to Madame Carette's first work , " My Mistress , the Empress Eugenie , " which is now in its third edition , Messrs . Dean and Son have purchased the English rights of that lady ' s second volume of " Intimate Recollections of the C < urt of the Tuileries . " The authorised translation will be published immediately , under the title of " The Eve of an Empire ' s Fall . "

PA LAC P . -The 13 th Annual Exhibition of Bicycles , Tricycles , and Accessories , which will this year take place at the Crystal Palace , opens to-day ( Friday ) , and promises to eclipse all its predecessors in
point of number of machines to be shown . Not only will the entire floor of the palace and courts be covered by exhibits , but this year the large Concert Hall has had to be thrown open to this use . Even then the space appears insufficient , as many manufacturers have been compelled to curtail their exhibits . Amongst the most notable exhibitors this year will be the Armstrong Company , Limited , who as cycle manufacturers show for the first time .

The funeral , with full military honours , of Field-Marshal Lord Napier of Magdala , who died last week in the eightieth year of his age , was solemnised in St . Paul ' s Cathedral on Tuesday . Proceedings commenced in the early morning with the removal ot the remains from the deceased officer ' s residence in Eaton Square to the Tower , of which he was the Constable , the coffin containing them being
borne on a gun carriage , covered with thc Union Jack , tinder an escort of the 12 th Lancers , antl accompanied by several mourning coaches and one of the Queen ' s carriages . On arrival at the Tower the remains lay in state for a short period in the Church of St . Peter , and , on being removed and again placed on the carriage , were conducted with all military pomp and circumstance , and to the strains of
funereal music , to the Cathedral , where the service for the dead was held , and the mortal remains were lowered into the crypt , where they lie beside those of Wellington , Nelson , an 1 other departed warriors . Bro . Sir Francis Knollys , Secretary to the Prince of Wales , has resumed his duties after thc severe attack of influenza which prostrated him for nearly a fortnight . Bro . the Earl of Zetland , Viceroy of Ireland , returned to Dublin early in the present week from the North of Ireland ,
where he had been on a visit tothe Marquis and Marchioness of Londonderry , at Mount-Stewart . The Queen has sent presents of game to St . George's Hospital , and the Cancer Hospital , Brompton , and a quantity of cast-off linen and some pheasants to the Samaritan Free Hospital for women and children .

We regret to hear of the death of Captain Horace Drummond Wolff , eldest son of Bro . Sir Henry Drummond Wolff , her Majesty ' s Minister to the Shah of Persia . The deceased had served with distinction in Egypt , and had never quite recovered from the wounds received during the campaign .

The fourth Masonic Invitation Ball , under the banner of the Foresters' Lodge , No . 456 , was held at the Town Hall , Uttoxeter , on Thursday , 16 th inst ., in aid of the Masonic Charities , under the patronage of Bro . Col . Foster Gough , Prov . G . M . Staffordshire . The ball was in every way successful , though , in consequence of several balls taking place the sa-ne evening , the attendance was not so large as on some former occasions . The arrangements , which were in the hands of Bros . Dr . W . 1 . H . Fletcher , S . D ., Uttoxeter ,
R . T . A . Hardy , and George J . Hardy , who acted as hon . secretaries , were everything that could be desired . The hall was tastefully dressed for the occasion with Masonic and floral devices , the arrangements being as usual in the hands of Mr . James Lasbrey . Thc supper was provided by Bro . Chas . Bunting , and was laid in the large room at the Cross Keys Hotel , which adjoins the ball room . The orchestral band which supplied the
excellent music was provided by Mr . H . Drury , of Derby . Dancing commenced soon after nine o'clock , and was continued with much enjoyment until 3 a . m . lhe brethren appeared in Masonic clothing , which added considerably to the general effect . THE UNEMPLOYED IN EAST LONDON . —At a time when much thought is being given to this matter , a practical suira'estion may be of service . Last year more than
£ 300 , 000 worth of foreign matches were purchased by inconsiderate consumers in this country , to the great injury of our own working people , so true is it that " evil is wrought by want of thought as well as want of heart . On the iGth inst ., in the presence of a large number of brethren , the new Masonic Hall at Crediton , which has recently been completed , was opened with full Masonic rites by Lord Ebrington , M . P ., Prov . G . M . The building , which was designed by Bro . B . Berry , is of domestic Gothic style , and is a valuable addition to the general architecture of the town . PROPOSED LIVERPOOL MASONIC LITERARY SOCIETY . —A meeting | was held at the Adelphi Hotel , on Saturday , the iSth inst ., for the purpose of forming- a society having for its object the giving of lectures , reading of papers on Masonic , arch ; eological , and other kindred subjects , and
the formation of a library . Bro . Joseph Hawkins , P . M . 216 , presided . There was a fair attendance of brethren . Rules were formed , and a Provisional Committee appointed , and it was arranged to hold the first annual meeting on the ist February , at the Adelphi Hotel .
It is officially announced that applications for space for exhibits at the forthcoming Exhibition of Agriculture and Forestry at Vienna , in 1 S 90 , will still be entertained for space in special buildings ( pavilions ) , which may be erected by the agent ; of foreign countries . It is required that these buildings shall be finished by May 10 th next at the latest .
The Committee of the Royal Humane Society on VVednesday awarded three silver medals—the Society ' s highest honour—in two cases of exceptional bravery in saving life . In the first case the medal is given-to Richard Smith , a boilermaker , for rescuing one man and attempting to rescue another at the Saltley Gasworks / near Birmingham , on the afternoon of the ist December . The two other silver
medals are awarded to Aaron Williams and David Jones , colliers , for saving the life of Thomas Roberts at the Dynevor Colliery on the 6 th inst . The ceremony of re-laying the foundation stone of the Airdrie Parish Church , which has undergone extensive alterations and additions , was performed on the 17 th inst ., under the auspices of the Provincial Grand Lodge of the Middle Ward of Lanarkshire , by Bro . Alexander Whitelaw , of
Gartshore and Woodhall , acting Depute Provincial Grand Master . The various lodges of the district assembled in the Olive Hall , and a processional march was then made to the scene of the ceremonial . Here there was a very large gathering of the public . Bro . Whitelaw having been presented with a silver trowel by Bro . A . M'Cregor Mitchell , the architect , the full Masonic ceremony was gone through in laying the foundation-stone . George's Hospital , and the Cancer Hospital , Brompton , and a quantity of cast-off linen and some pheasants to the Samaritan Free Hospital for women and children .

performance of "Sweet Lavender" on Saturday afternoon last at Terry ' s Theatre . Bray Church , in Berkshire , has received an addition to its stained glass , of a window , from the studio of Mr . Taylor , of Berners-street , in memory of the late vicar , with the subject of " St . Michael and Jacob's vision of the angels . "
The Court has been ordered to wear mourning- for 10 days from Tuesday , the 21 st inst ., out of respect to the Duke of Aosta , for a few years King of Spain , and brother of the King of Italy , who died on Saturday last , after a brief illness .
The second annual ball of the Duke of . Cornwall Lodge , No . 1529 , was held at the Assembly Rooms , Red Lion Hotel , St . Columb , on Friday , the 10 th inst . There was a good attendance . Dancing , which commenced at half-past eight , was kept up till about three o'clock .
We regret to hear of the death of Captain Horace Drummond Wolff , eldest son of Bro . Sir Henry Drummond Wolff , her Majesty ' s Minister to the Shah of Persia . The deceased had served with distinction in Egypt , and had never quite recovered from the wounds received during the campaign .
On Wednesday , the 5 th inst ., a meeting - of the brethren of the Norman Lodge , No . 1334 , was held in the Masonic Hall , Durham , for the purpose of Installing- Bro . William Sanderson , Worshipful Master for the ensuing year . There was a large attendance of brethren , and the ceremony was impressively performed by Bro James Laidler .
On Wednesday , the Mayor of Reading , Pro . J . T . Dodd , solicitor , was installed as W . M . of the Union Lodge at the Ma . 'Onic Hall , in the presence of several Grand Officers , Provincial Grand Officers , and a numerous body of members and visitors . The ceremony was performed by Bro . R . C . Mount , P . M .
The annual Masonic ball was held in the Public Hall , Barnsley , on Wednesday , the 15 th inst ., and was well attended . The ball , which is promoted by the officers of Lodge Friendly , No . 1613 , was in every way a success . The hall was neatly decorated . Supper was served in the Assembly Room , and was supplied by the King ' s Head Hotel Company . Messrs . Burnett ' s band officiated , and supplied a capital programme of dance music .
A Masonic funeral service was held on Sunday afternoon , at St . Mary ' s Church , Beswick , under the auspices of the Ashbury Lodge , No . 1459 , in memoriam of the late Bros . George Wells and N . The fourth Masonic Invitation Ball , under the banner of the Foresters' Lodge , No . 456 , was held at the Town Hall , Uttoxeter , on Thursday , 16 th inst ., in aid of the Masonic Charities , under the patronage of Bro . Col . Foster Gough , Prov . G . M . Staffordshire . The ball was in every way successful , though , in consequence of several balls taking place the sa-ne evening , the attendance was not so large as on some former occasions . R . T . A . Hardy , and George J . Hardy , who acted as hon . secretaries , were everything that could be desired . The hall was tastefully dressed for the occasion with Masonic and floral devices , the arrangements being as usual in the hands of Mr . James Lasbrey . Thc supper was provided by Bro . Chas . Bunting , and was laid in the large room at the Cross Keys Hotel , which adjoins the ball room . The orchestral band which supplied the
excellent music was provided by Mr . H . Drury , of Derby . Dancing commenced soon after nine o'clock , and was continued with much enjoyment until 3 a . m . lhe brethren appeared in Masonic clothing , which added considerably to the general effect . On the iGth inst ., in the presence of a large number of brethren , the new Masonic Hall at Crediton , which has recently been completed , was opened with full Masonic rites by Lord Ebrington , M . P ., Prov . G . M . The building , which was designed by Bro . B . Berry , is of domestic Gothic style , and is a valuable addition to the general architecture of the town . PROPOSED LIVERPOOL MASONIC LITERARY SOCIETY . —A meeting | was held at the Adelphi Hotel , on Saturday , the iSth inst ., for the purpose of forming- a society having for its object the giving of lectures , reading of papers on Masonic , arch ; eological , and other kindred subjects , and
the formation of a library . Bro . Joseph Hawkins , P . M . 216 , presided . There was a fair attendance of brethren . Rules were formed , and a Provisional Committee appointed , and it was arranged to hold the first annual meeting on the ist February , at the Adelphi Hotel .
It is officially announced that applications for space for exhibits at the forthcoming Exhibition of Agriculture and Forestry at Vienna , in 1 S 90 , will still be entertained for space in special buildings ( pavilions ) , which may be erected by the agent ; of foreign countries . It is required that these buildings shall be finished by May 10 th next at the latest .
The Committee of the Royal Humane Society on VVednesday awarded three silver medals—the Society ' s highest honour—in two cases of exceptional bravery in saving life . In the first case the medal is given-to Richard Smith , a boilermaker , for rescuing one man and attempting to rescue another at the Saltley Gasworks / near Birmingham , on the afternoon of the ist December . The two other silver
medals are awarded to Aaron Williams and David Jones , colliers , for saving the life of Thomas Roberts at the Dynevor Colliery on the 6 th inst . The ceremony of re-laying the foundation stone of the Airdrie Parish Church , which has undergone extensive alterations and additions , was performed on the 17 th inst ., under the auspices of the Provincial Grand Lodge of the Middle Ward of Lanarkshire , by Bro . Alexander Whitelaw , of
Gartshore and Woodhall , acting Depute Provincial Grand Master . The various lodges of the district assembled in the Olive Hall , and a processional march was then made to the scene of the ceremonial . Here there was a very large gathering of the public . Bro . Whitelaw having been presented with a silver trowel by Bro . A . M'Cregor Mitchell , the architect , the full Masonic ceremony was gone through in laying the foundation-stone . A choir and band provided the music .
The remains of Bro . John E . Jackson , for many years manager of the business of Mr . Thomas Jones / Mount Pleasant , were on the 19 th inst ., interred at Anfield Cemetery , and the large gathering of Masonic and private friends , as well as employes of the firm , showed the deep respect in which he had been held .
