MAY . On the 5 th of May the Supreme Grand Chapter met , when the new officers for 1880-S 1 were invested and the petitions for warrants for five new chapters granted . On the 19 th the Lodge of Benevolence

met , and granted £ 785 . On the 20 th the Grand Lodge assembled at Truro , when H . R . H . the Grand Master , in the presence of H . R . H . the Princess of Wales and a numerous assembly of the noblemen and gentry of the county , of the

Masonic body , of Truro people , and visitors , laid the foundation stone of Truro Cathedral . This proceeding , somewhat unusual in the history of modern Freemasonry , was one of great interest , and deserves to be fitly recorded in the Masonic chronicle

of 1 SS 0 . It was a fact very gratifying to Freemasons , and is a reply , most clear and convincing and crushing , to those idle and relentless scribes who are always inveighing against and assailing Freemasons , as if they were enemies to

all that religion sanctions , or good men revere . English , and Cornish Freemasons specially , will long remember thc event . After the ceremony a non-Masonic banquet took place . On thc 21 st the election of candidates for the Royal Masonic

Benevolent Institution took place , when twenty-two males and twenty-six females were elected . On the 27 th a meeting of the General Committee of the Girls ' School took place , when it was decided to have Miss Jarwood ' s portrait painted , and placed at the

Institution , in token of regard and respect for her . Miss Jarwood has been connected with the Institution a quarter of a century . On the 29 th announcement was made that Bro . Hugh D . Sandeman was appointed Secretary General to the Supreme Council ,

33 , Golden-square , in place of Colonel Gierke , thc Grand Secretary . During May the following chapters were consecrated : The Bedford , 157 , by Comp . J . Terry , assisted by Comps . Samuel

Turquand and H . E . Francis ; the Friendly , 1513 , by Comp . Ensor Drury , Past P . G . H . VV . Yorkshire ; and the Stanmore , 1549 , by Comp . H . C . Levander , assisted by Comps . H . G . Buss and James Terry .

JUNE . On the 2 nd Grand Lodge was holden , at which the members of the Lodge of Benevolence and the Board of General Purposes and the Colonial Board were elected , and the ordinary business ,

otherwise unimportant , transacted . The accounts of Grand Lodge manifested a state of great financial prosperity . Long may it continue ! During this month meetings of the Committees of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , on the 5 th , and of

the Boys' School , on the 15 th , took place , when much routine business was transacted . On the 16 th the centenary celebration of the Merchants' Lodge , 241 , Liverpool , took place . On the 23 rd the Lodge of Benevolence met , and granted £ 870 . On the

29 th Lord Holmesdale , Provincial Grand Master for Kent , laid the foundation stone of a new Masonic temple at Canterbury . On the previous 26 th the visit of the Stewards of the Boys' School Festival to Wood Green took place , when Earl Lathom

kindl y presented the prizes , with appropriate remarks . During June the following lodges were consecrated : The Clarcmont , 1861 , by General J . S . Brownrigg , C . B ., Provincial Grand Master

Surrey , assisted by Bro . Rev . J . S . Brownrigg , Deputy Grand Master Berks and Bucks , and others ; and the Sandown , 1869 , by Bro . W . W . B . Beach , M . P ., Provincial Grand Master Hants and Isle of Wight .

Charities in this order of their returns maj' be changed . Be it as it may , wc venture to consider this total most gratifying to all friends of the Charities , and not a little to the honour and good feeling of our benevolent Order . On the 3 rd the death of Bro .

John Hervey took place , after much physical suffering . Though thc brethren were aware of his state of prostration and illness , his death came upon his old friends and comrades as a great shock , and a sad memory of other days ; faithful work , much

kindness , and pleasant intercourse now ended here . On the I 2 lh a testimonial was presented to Bro . Lieutenant-Colonel Shadwell II . Gierke , Grand Secretary , of a two-fold character , —one emanating from thc Supreme Grand Council , 33 ,

Golden-square , the other from the members generally of the Ancient and Accepted Rite . On the 12 th , at the meeting of the Alliance Lodge , 1 S 27 , the Lord M .-13 'or and Sheriffs paid a visit in state , Bro . Sir John Monckton being Worshipful Master .

Bro . John Hcrvey's funeral took place at Norwood Cemetery on the 7 th ; the very bad weather rendered the attendance of the Craft necessarily limited in numbers . On the 12 th the members of thc Alliance Lodge , 1 S 27 , presented Bro . Sir John Monckton with an emblazoned address on

vellum , congratulating him on the honour of knighthood conferred on him by Her Majesty thc Queen . On the 14 th , at the meeting of the Permanent Committee of the lloyal Masonic Benevolent Institution , Bro . John Mason was appointed

Collector of the Institution , from a long list of candidates , by a considerable majority . In the Freemason of July 17 th appeared a monograph by Bro . Kenneth R . H . Mackenzie , in memoriam of Bro . John Hervey . On the 21 st thc Lodge of

Benevolence met , and granted £ 575 . A meeting of the Provincial Grand I ^ odge of Middlesex took place on thc 31 st , at which a service of plate was presented to Bro . Lieut .-Col . Sir Francis Burdett , Bart ., on the completion of his tenth year as Provincial Grand Master of Middlesex .

AUGUST . On the 4 th Grand Chapter met , when the petitions for six new chapters were granted , and the Committee reported that as thc funds of Grand Chapter amounted to £ 3370 , grants of £ 300 should

be made to each of the three great Metropolitan Charities . Thc report was unanimously adopted . On the Sth thc Lodge of I 3 enevolence voted £ 415 to applicants for relief . On thc 21 st of August

some very appropriate remarks appeared in thc Freemason relative to Lieut .-Col . Butler's foolish attack on Freemasonry in Good Words . During August thc I ' riory I ^ odgc , No . 1863 , was consecrated at Tynemouth .

and Roxburghshire under the Grand Lodge of Scotland . Bro . Edward Cox , well-known to Masons in London and elsewhere , who died on the 15 th , was buried on the 21 st , a large number of brethren attending . On the 21 st Sir Edmund

Lechmere , JJart ., M . P ., was installed Grand Superintendent of Worcestershire . On thc 22 nd the Lodge of I 3 enevolencc voted £ 460 . During this month the lodge and chapters following were consecrated : Gostling Murray Lodge , No . 1871

on behalf of thc Provincial Grand Lodge , consisting of an illuminated address and a silver service , for his valuable services for twenty-four years as Provincial Grand Secretary . On the 6 th the centenary meeting of thc St . George ' s Lodge ,

Doneasier , 242 , was held . Bro . Lord Suffield was installed Grand Superintendent of Suffolk , by Bro . the Rev . C . J . Martyn , P . G . C . On the 7 th a most enthusiastic assembly of members of the Craft was held at Freemasons' Hall , Bath , to

commemorate the centenary of the Freemasons' Hall Medal , which was agreed to in 1779 , and struck in 1880 . There arc four country lodges entitled to the privilege of wearing this medal in the persons of their Masters for the time being , in perpetuity , viz ., 41 ,

Bath ; 75 , Falmouth ; 154 , Wakefield ; and 237 , Swansea . No . 75 celebrated the centenary of the vote of thc medal on the 13 II 1 October last , and thc senior of ihc four lodges observed the centenary on the 7 th . At each of the meetings the D . P . G . M .

of thc provinces ( Cornwall and Somerset respectively ) were present , and also I 3 ro . VV . J . Hughan , P . G . D . of England , lo whom the celebrations are mainly due . That of the Royal Cumberland Lodge , No . 41 , Bath , however , far exceeded in

enthusiasm and character that of No . 75 , because of the brilliant assembly of distinguished Masons , ns well as the high position of their VV . Master in thc Order , Bro . H . Hopkins , P . P . S . G . W . Warwickshire . On the 9 II 1 the Quarterly Meeting of

the Girls School took place , when forty-two candidates out of fifty-four were elected . The following remarks in the Freemason at that time may bc remembered with advantage : "The Quarterly Courts of our great Educational Institutions have

taken place , and at thc Girls' School meeting on Saturday all the proposed alterations in the rules were negatived . We regrel that the increase of £ 20 lo £ 40 , as suggested by the Committee to be granted in exceptional cases only , was rejected ,

the more so as we have reason to believe that the decision of thc meeting was based on a misunderstanding of the real point in debate , and an erroneous realization of the facts of lhe case . At some future period we have no doubt but that the

reasonable proposal of the House Committee will be carried . Bro . Frank Richardson put the matter very clearly in a few words , when he said , ' What £ 20 would obtain for the outgoing pupil when the rules were framed would probably require

something more now to effect . ' Thc idea that all outgoing pupils receive £ 20 is a complete mistake ; that amount , as under the present rule , is slill the exception . And thc same law was to apply to thc increase to £ 40 . The grant was not intended to

bc normal , but only exceptional . Wc wish to remind our readers that the last election of the Girls'School was purely an exceptional one , and as such not likely to occur again for some time . It appears to us that we cannot too much commend

the Managers of thc Institution , and , above all , the Building Committee and its gallant Chairman , for this happy consummation of affairs , by which the position of the School is greatly improved per sc , and the inestimable blessings of its excellent

course of education , and the protection of a happy and comfortable home , secured to so many poor and often all but friendless orphans . " On the 19 th a new Masonic Hall was consecrated at'Hanley . On the 20 th the Lodge

of Benevolence voted £ 940 . On the 25 th a grand banquet was given by the Lord Mayor , Junior Grand Warden of England , to H . R . H . the Grand Master ; H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , Bro . thc Prince of Gliicksberg , and a large number of

noble and distinguished brethren , most of thc Provincial Grand Masters being present . The banquet was a great success , and was a happy thought of that worthy brother , who , in his year of office as Lord Mayor , has never hesitated to avow himself

on all occasions a member of our ancient and loyal and benevolent Brotherhood . During this month the following chapters were consecrated : The Okeover , 1324 , by Comp . H . C . Okeover , Prov . G . H . ;

commemorate the centenary of the Freemasons' Hall Medal , which was agreed to in 1779 , and struck in 1880 . There arc four country lodges entitled to the privilege of wearing this medal in the persons of their Masters for the time being , in perpetuity , viz ., 41 ,

Bath ; 75 , Falmouth ; 154 , Wakefield ; and 237 , Swansea . No . 75 celebrated the centenary of the vote of thc medal on the 13 II 1 October last , and thc senior of ihc four lodges observed the centenary on the 7 th . At each of the meetings the D . P . G . M .

of thc provinces ( Cornwall and Somerset respectively ) were present , and also I 3 ro . VV . J . Hughan , P . G . D . of England , lo whom the celebrations are mainly due . That of the Royal Cumberland Lodge , No . 41 , Bath , however , far exceeded in

enthusiasm and character that of No . 75 , because of the brilliant assembly of distinguished Masons , ns well as the high position of their VV . Master in thc Order , Bro . H . Hopkins , P . P . S . G . W . Warwickshire . On the 9 II 1 the Quarterly Meeting of

the Girls School took place , when forty-two candidates out of fifty-four were elected . The following remarks in the Freemason at that time may bc remembered with advantage : "The Quarterly Courts of our great Educational Institutions have

taken place , and at thc Girls' School meeting on Saturday all the proposed alterations in the rules were negatived . We regrel that the increase of £ 20 lo £ 40 , as suggested by the Committee to be granted in exceptional cases only , was rejected ,

the more so as we have reason to believe that the decision of thc meeting was based on a misunderstanding of the real point in debate , and an erroneous realization of the facts of lhe case . At some future period we have no doubt but that the

reasonable proposal of the House Committee will be carried . Bro . Frank Richardson put the matter very clearly in a few words , when he said , ' What £ 20 would obtain for the outgoing pupil when the rules were framed would probably require

something more now to effect . ' Thc idea that all outgoing pupils receive £ 20 is a complete mistake ; that amount , as under the present rule , is slill the exception . And thc same law was to apply to thc increase to £ 40 . The grant was not intended to

bc normal , but only exceptional . Wc wish to remind our readers that the last election of the Girls'School was purely an exceptional one , and as such not likely to occur again for some time . It appears to us that we cannot too much commend

the Managers of thc Institution , and , above all , the Building Committee and its gallant Chairman , for this happy consummation of affairs , by which the position of the School is greatly improved per sc , and the inestimable blessings of its excellent

course of education , and the protection of a happy and comfortable home , secured to so many poor and often all but friendless orphans . " On the 19 th a new Masonic Hall was consecrated at'Hanley . On the 20 th the Lodge

of Benevolence voted £ 940 . On the 25 th a grand banquet was given by the Lord Mayor , Junior Grand Warden of England , to H . R . H . the Grand Master ; H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , Bro . thc Prince of Gliicksberg , and a large number of

noble and distinguished brethren , most of thc Provincial Grand Masters being present . The banquet was a great success , and was a happy thought of that worthy brother , who , in his year of office as Lord Mayor , has never hesitated to avow himself

on all occasions a member of our ancient and loyal and benevolent Brotherhood . During this month the following chapters were consecrated : The Okeover , 1324 , by Comp . H . C . Okeover , Prov . G . H . ;

Aldershot Camp , 1331 , by Comp . W . VV . B . Beach , M . P ., Grand Superintendent Hants and Isle of Wight , assisted by Comps . Eve and Hacker ; the Highgate , 1366 , by Comp . VV . Stephens , assisted b y Comps . Edgar Bowyer and George
