Charities in this order of their returns maj' be changed . Be it as it may , wc venture to consider this total most gratifying to all friends of the Charities , and not a little to the honour and good feeling of our benevolent Order . On the 3 rd the death of Bro .
John Hervey took place , after much physical suffering . Though thc brethren were aware of his state of prostration and illness , his death came upon his old friends and comrades as a great shock , and a sad memory of other days ; faithful work , much
kindness , and pleasant intercourse now ended here . On the I 2 lh a testimonial was presented to Bro . Lieutenant-Colonel Shadwell II . Gierke , Grand Secretary , of a two-fold character , —one emanating from thc Supreme Grand Council , 33 ,

on behalf of thc Provincial Grand Lodge , consisting of an illuminated address and a silver service , for his valuable services for twenty-four years as Provincial Grand Secretary . On the 6 th the centenary meeting of thc St . George ' s Lodge ,
Doneasier , 242 , was held . Bro . Lord Suffield was installed Grand Superintendent of Suffolk , by Bro . the Rev . C . J . Martyn , P . G . C . On the 7 th a most enthusiastic assembly of members of the Craft was held at Freemasons' Hall , Bath , to
commemorate the centenary of the Freemasons' Hall Medal , which was agreed to in 1779 , and struck in 1880 . There arc four country lodges entitled to the privilege of wearing this medal in the persons of their Masters for the time being , in perpetuity , viz ., 41 ,
Bath ; 75 , Falmouth ; 154 , Wakefield ; and 237 , Swansea . No . 75 celebrated the centenary of the vote of thc medal on the 13 II 1 October last , and thc senior of ihc four lodges observed the centenary on the 7 th . At each of the meetings the D . P . G . M .
of thc provinces ( Cornwall and Somerset respectively ) were present , and also I 3 ro . VV . J . Hughan , P . G . D . of England , lo whom the celebrations are mainly due . That of the Royal Cumberland Lodge , No . 41 , Bath , however , far exceeded in
enthusiasm and character that of No . 75 , because of the brilliant assembly of distinguished Masons , ns well as the high position of their VV . Master in thc Order , Bro . H . Hopkins , P . P . S . G . W . Warwickshire . On the 9 II 1 the Quarterly Meeting of
the Girls School took place , when forty-two candidates out of fifty-four were elected . The following remarks in the Freemason at that time may bc remembered with advantage : "The Quarterly Courts of our great Educational Institutions have
taken place , and at thc Girls' School meeting on Saturday all the proposed alterations in the rules were negatived . We regrel that the increase of £ 20 lo £ 40 , as suggested by the Committee to be granted in exceptional cases only , was rejected ,
the more so as we have reason to believe that the decision of thc meeting was based on a misunderstanding of the real point in debate , and an erroneous realization of the facts of lhe case . At some future period we have no doubt but that the
reasonable proposal of the House Committee will be carried . Bro . Frank Richardson put the matter very clearly in a few words , when he said , ' What £ 20 would obtain for the outgoing pupil when the rules were framed would probably require
something more now to effect . ' Thc idea that all outgoing pupils receive £ 20 is a complete mistake ; that amount , as under the present rule , is slill the exception . And thc same law was to apply to thc increase to £ 40 . The grant was not intended to
bc normal , but only exceptional . Wc wish to remind our readers that the last election of the Girls'School was purely an exceptional one , and as such not likely to occur again for some time . It appears to us that we cannot too much commend
the Managers of thc Institution , and , above all , the Building Committee and its gallant Chairman , for this happy consummation of affairs , by which the position of the School is greatly improved per sc , and the inestimable blessings of its excellent
course of education , and the protection of a happy and comfortable home , secured to so many poor and often all but friendless orphans . " On the 19 th a new Masonic Hall was consecrated at'Hanley . On the 20 th the Lodge
of Benevolence voted £ 940 . On the 25 th a grand banquet was given by the Lord Mayor , Junior Grand Warden of England , to H . R . H . the Grand Master ; H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , Bro . thc Prince of Gliicksberg , and a large number of
noble and distinguished brethren , most of thc Provincial Grand Masters being present . The banquet was a great success , and was a happy thought of that worthy brother , who , in his year of office as Lord Mayor , has never hesitated to avow himself
on all occasions a member of our ancient and loyal and benevolent Brotherhood . During this month the following chapters were consecrated : The Okeover , 1324 , by Comp . H . C . Okeover , Prov . G . H . ;
Aldershot Camp , 1331 , by Comp . W . VV . B . Beach , M . P ., Grand Superintendent Hants and Isle of Wight , assisted by Comps . Eve and Hacker ; the Highgate , 1366 , by Comp . VV . Stephens , assisted b y Comps . Edgar Bowyer and George
