MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS
Lord Arthur Hill , M . P ., was on the igth inst . nominated Prov . Mark Master for the ensuing year by the Sussex Prov . Grand Mark Master Masons . The Rose Lodge of Instruction hitherto held at the Walmer Castle , Peckham-road , has removed to the Stirling Castle , Church-street , Camberwell , where it meets on Thursday evenings at eight o'clock .
Bro . Alderman Savory will preside at the 16 th annual dinner of the Goldsmiths' and Jewellers' Annuity and Asylum Institution , on Monday , November 12 th , at the Guildhall Tavern , Gresham-street . Bro . Shrewsbury , wine and spirit merchant , of 19 , Change-alley ( established in 1 S 32 ) , has , together with his partner , retired from business , and arranged with Mr .
G . H . Rayner , for many years connected with the firm , as his successor . An excellent portrait of the Karl of Mar and Kellie , Grand Master of Scotland , in full Masonic costume , has just been published by Mr . J . W . Watt , of Glasgow . It is an admirable work of art , and we should say a faithful likeness .
The ceremony of Installation of Principals will be worked on the evening of Thursday , November 1 st , by the Companions of the North London Chapter of Improvement at the Alwyn Castle Tavern , St . Paul's-road , Canonbury . Chapter will be opened at eight . Companions are cordially invited . Option of renewal is offered by advertisement to
the holders of City Corporation Bonds for public works and improvements , maturing in 1 SS 4 to the amount of £ 278 , 600 . At the same time announcement is made for the absolute discharge of bonds specified to the amount of £ 199 , 500 . Amongst the papers read at the recent meeting of the incorporated Law Society at Bath was one by Bro .
F . K . Munton on " Some Remarkable Decisions affecting Railway Companies . " Bros . Grantham , R . Dodd , and T . H . Devonshire , as also Bro . Munton , took part in the debates on various subjects referred to in the papers . By the death , on Saturday last , at Brighton , in the eighty-seventh year of his age , of Bro . the Marquis of Donegall , K . P ., the Provincial Grand Mastership of Antrim
is rendered vacant , while a riband of the Order of St . Patrick and the Lord-Lieutenancy of Co . Antrim are placed at the disposal of the Government . Sir Knig ht Gurney of Chicago , pays the following tribute to "Our noble Queen : "— "Victoria is the mother of a Grand Master , the mother of a family of Masons ; and one of the brightest , most exemplary jewels
that ever graced the diadem of royalty . She is an honour to our English brethren , an honour to her sex , and when time comes that she must go up higher , humanity will weep , civilization mourn , though angels rejoice in the brighter crown of her immortality . " Captain Shaw , Chief of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade , has been presented by her Majesty the Queen
with a handsome clock . The case is of black marble with gold Corinthian columns on either side , the figures and hands being of gold . At the top there is a gold helmet , with other devices in bronze underneath , emblematical of the fireman ' s calling . A gold plate bears the following inscription : " Presented to Captain Eyre M . Shaw , CM ., Superintendent of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade , by
Victoria , R . I ., 1 S 83 . " The remains of a Saxon church have been discovered at Peterborough . As the workmen engaged in the restoration of the cathedral were digging for the purpose of laying foundations for the new piers , they came against masonry which clearly indicates the presence of some building in former times . It is supposed to be a
portion of a Saxon monastry , which was built on that spot in the year 655 , and destroyed by fire in 870 . The stones still bear the traces of having been exposed to fire . A Saxon sarcophagus was also exposed . As a rule Masons appear to take little interest in supporting journals that devote themselves to the interest of the Craft . We frequently hear from brethren that they
are too much engaged to find time for reading about Freemasonry , to many of these we return answer , the loss is yours . All men who take an interest in any society they are associated with should be able to give some account of what is being done by that society . Masonic journals conducted on broad and sound lines are worthy the support of the members of the Craft;—Freemasons' Chronicle

Some excitement is stated by the Indian papers to have been caused among the people of the Madras Presidency by the fact of the sun having recently presented a bright green appearance , particularly near the time of setting . Professor Michie Smith , in commenting upon this phenomenon , observes that as far as he can discover the appearance of a green sun is very uncommon . Mr .
Lockyer , however , once observed the sun to be of a vivid green when seen through the steam of a little paddle boat on Lake Windermere , and this circumstance , he thinks , points to a solution of the difficulty , and shows that the cause of thc appearance is an unusual amount of aqueous vapour in the atmosphere , existing as actual vapour , and not condensed into clouds . The directors of the Pearl Life Assurance Company are to be congratulated on the very satisfactory balance sheet they have been enabled to issue in connection with their 19 th annual report . It is an Industrial Assurance Company and its object is to encourage thrift on the part of the working classes . In these circumstances its success , as gradually developed from its origin till the present time , is all the more gratifying , From the report itself
we gather that no less than 222 , 030 additional policies weie issued during the year ended 30 th June last , the new annual premium income thereby represented being in excess of £ 103 , 000 . The income derived from thc receipt of premiums during the same period amounted in round figures to £ 120 , 239 , or upwards of £ 16 , 000 more than in the previous 12 months . The amount of the Life Insurance
Fund in hand on the said 30 th June last , was over £ 60 , 585 as against a fraction short of £ 54 , 466 on 30 th June , 1 SS 2 , while the business appears to be conducted with a due regard to economy . In short the position of the Company gives indication of careful management and stability , and that being so , is well worthy of encouragement by the classes to whom it specially appeals for support .
In addition to their Patent Invisible Automatic Roof Ventilator , the / Eolus Waterspray and General Ventilating Company , Limited , have invented a Patent Deflecting and Injecting Automatic Exhaust Roof Ventilator , which has been worked most successfully . It is by no means unsightly in appearance ; but if it is desired , so as for instance , not to interfere with the general architectural appearance of the building in which it is employedit may be
, placed inside a turret or belfry , or otherwise disguised without in the slightest degree impairing its efficiency . Ihe head acts as a wind-catcher and downcast ventilator , while the vitiated air from the main shaft is extracted by means of a series of curved baffle plates skilfully arranged , the whole being fitted into a main shaft of nearly the same diameter as the head . It acts with equal facility under all conditions of temperature , and is so sensitive that it will
work efficientl y and perfectly automatically even under the influence of air currents from bellows . It is watertight and is warranted to be quite free from down-draught wherever due provision is made for the admission of fresh air in place of the vitiated air drawn off from the ventilator . Moreover , it not only works effectually , as an inspection of the model at the company's premises , 235 , High Holborn , will show , but it is relatively cheaper than any other roof ventilators .
