The gathering was summoned to the Temperance Hall , a large and commodious building , and there the brethren assembled soon after high noon . There were various robing rooms
comfortably arranged for the visitors , and the hospitality of the Ferrum brethren found ample scope and was exemplified in the way they provided for the creature comforts of those who had travelled from an earl y hour in order to be present from distant parts of the province . The Board of Benevolence sat for about an hour previous to the opening of Grand Lodge , and during that time about £ 100 was granted to necessitous Masons , their

Compliment At Bath To V.W. Bro. W. J. Hughan, P.G.D.
COMPLIMENT AT BATH TO V . W . BRO . W . J . HUGHAN , P . G . D .
Our distinguished Bro . Hughan , so well-known as of Truro ( now removed to Torquay , as more suitable for his health ) , on his way to York and Scarborough to keep Masonic engagements , accompanied by his wife , stayed for a few days with their old friend Bro . Dr . Hopkins , at
Bath , who having a year or two ago introduced him to the brethren of the Royal Cumberland Lodge , No . 41 , by whom he was elected an honorary member , thought that a meeting with some of them would be pleasurable to both parties . Alter having consulted the W . M . and several P . Ms ., with their assent he issued invitations to all the P . Ms , and officers to a friendly supper at the Castle Hotel on Saturday ,
the 20 th inst ., in honour of Bro . Hughan . These were well responded to , and the following were punctual in attendance : Bros . P . Ms . Ashley , J . Turner , S . Mitchell , Braham , Dr . Hopkins , Radway , and Cater ; Mercer , W . M . ; Ames , J . W . ; VV . Peach , S . D . ; Gregory , Steward ; C . Wilkinson , P . J . W . ; Robinson , and L . Howes , Z . Only seven were absent , all of whom sent satisfactory reasons .
The chair was of course taken by the VV . M ., who after supper addressed a few words to the brethren , and proposed the usual loyal toast . This having been honoured , Bro . Dr . Hopkins explained the circumstances under which he had issued the summonses , expressing his confidence that the visitor would be able to afford them interesting and valuable instruction . Bro . Radway , after a few complimentary
remarks in reference to Bro . Hughan and his host as united old and indefatigable labourers tor thebenelit of the Order , and the expression of a hope that the former would derive such benefit from his change of residence as to enable him to continue his researches in Masonic history and literature , proposed his health , to which the brethren cordially responded .
In his reply Bro . HUGHAN entered at some length on the principal changes proposed by the revisers of the Book of Constitutions , and explained the reasons for them , concluding by a statement of the pleasure he derived from membership of so old , energetic and useful a . lodge , and his desire to render assistance and promote its interests by all the means in his power . It was intended that this should be the only toast of the
evening , but Bro . Ashley could not allow the brethren to separate without proposing one in honour of the brother to whom the lodge was indebted for acquaintance with his old friend Bro . Hughan , and the many benefits derived from it . . 1 Bro . Dr . HOPKINS suitably responded , expressing his satisfaction that the course he had taken in calling together the brethren had met with their approval . The party broke up soon after half-past ten .

MASONIC PRESENTATIONS .
The annual banquet of the Star Lodge of Instruction took place on Tuesday evening , the iGth inst ., at the Five Bells Hotel , New Cross , when nearly Go of the brethren and visitors sat down to a sumptuous repast , provided in a style for which Bro . Bear has long been proverbial . The tables were adorned with vases and epergnes of choice
flowers and ornamental plants , and the arrangements made by " ye worthy host" elicited expressions of unqualified satisfaction from all present . The chair was occupied by Bro . James Terry , the esteemed Secretary of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , who was faced in the vicechair by Bro . Waterman , P . M . At the conclusion of the repast , which was much enjoyed , the customary loyal and
Craft toasts were proposed from the chair , and received in a manner characteristic of the Star Lodge of Instruction , which fully bears out the reputation it has long enjoyed as one of the most popular and successful in the South of London . In proposing the toast of the evening , Bro . TERRY spoke of the able and unwearied exertions put forth on behalf of
the lodge by its talented Preceptor , Bro . George Andrews , P . M ., and its equally zealous Secretary , Bro . Walter Martin . This being no ordinary night , he thought he might deviate from the usual routine by making special mention of the names of thosebrethren whose efforts for promoting the interests of the Star Lodge of Instruction had been so marked and unwearied . ( This observation was the signal
for loud and continued applause . ) Many remarkable and successful gatherings had taken p lace in connection with this lodge ; but none more friendly and harmonious than that in which they had the pleasure of participating on the present occasion . He could assure the brethren tint the lodge would not have been in its present prosperous position had it not been for the efforts put forth by the brethren he
had named to raise Masonry in the South-eastern District of London . In association with this he should also mention the name of Bro . George Bolton , P . M ., who might be designated the father 01 Masonry in this neighbourhood , having established the first lodge here . Corning to the immediate subject before him , Bro . Terry said it had been suggested by a few members of the lodge that a

suitable testimonial should be presentcd to Bros . Andrews and Martin , as a mark of respect and esteem and in recognition of the valuable services they had rendered in connection with this and other lodges of instruction . ( Cheers . ) Both these brethren had by their ability and careful attention to the interests of the lodge brought it lo its present state of prosperity . The brethren present were sensible of the excellence ot their workand
, esteemed Bros . Andrews and Martin accordingly ; and in behalf of the subscribers he asked their acceptance of the testimonials , which were the spontaneous outcome of the appreciation and respect entertained towards them by the whole of the members of the lodge . In handing to Bros . Andrews and Martin each a beautiful timepiece and a set of ornaments , he expressed the hope that they might live long , and that the flight of time might bring them the
happy remembrance of this moment , which must be so full of agreeable emotions to them . In conclusion , Bro . Terry further alluded to the great services which had been rendered by Bros . Andrews and Martin to the Masonic world in general , and to the Star Lodge of Instruction in particular . ( Cheers . ) The testimonials consisted of massive and handsome timepieces , of elaborate design and beautifully ornamented
and each bore an inscription to the effect that it was " presented by the members of the Star Lodge of Instruction and other brethren , in recognition of valuable services connected with Freemasonry . " Bro . GEO . ANDREWS , who was received with loud applause , returning thanks for the handsome compliment paid to him , said he should always look upon it as a great incentive , if , indeed , such were necessary , to continue his
efforts in the cause of Freemasonry , and especially the Star Lodge of Instruction . He congratulated the brethren upon the satisfactory financial position of the lodge , and expressed the hope that it might long continue to exercise its usefulness and influence in the South of London . Bro . WALTER MARTIN in expressing his thanks for the honour which had been conterred upon him said he hoped he might assert without egotism that he had
endeavoured to do his duty as a good , true , and faithful Mason . ( Cheers . ) Whilst he had been Secretary of this lodge of instruction he had studied , in addition to imparting what Masonic knowledge he possessed , to impress upon the brethren that Charity was one of the principal objects of the Craft . In saying this it afforded him the most heartfelt pleasure in being able to hand to their esteemed brother in the chair that evening a cheque
for twenty guineas in aid of the Masonic Benevolent Institution , so that the Star Lodge of Instruction should not be behind in its interest in that Charity compared with what it had done for the Boys' School . He had also pleasure in informing the brethren that the average attendance of members two years ago was 24 , whilst in thc last year the number had risen to 31 at each meeting . He thanked the brethren for the motives of affection which had
prompted the handsome gift they had presented to him , and promised to continue in the future , as in the past , to do his utmost for the welfare of the Star Lodge of Instruction . ( Cheers . ) Bro . Geo . BOLTON , P . M ., next proposed "The Health of the Chairman , " who in suitable terms returned thanks for the cordiality with which the mention of his name had been received . He thanked the brethren also for having
asked him to preside on this interesting occasion and for the unexpected generosity of the lodge in handing him so substantial a cheque on behalf of the Benevolent Institution , in which he felt naturally , as its Secretary , the warmest interest . He should be most happy at all times to attend and render what assistance he could to so flourishing a lodge of instruction as was the Star . ( Cheers . ) " The Health of the Stewards" came next , the toast
being suitably acknowledged by Bros . Scudder and Dilley , sen . Several other complimentary toasts were honoured , and the chairman before closing the meeting favoured the company with an eloquent recitation . The proceedings were interspersed with some excellent songs , the pleasures of the evening being contributed to by Bros . Packer , Scudder , J . Morgan , Dilley , jun ., Moore , and Mimms ,
Bro . Packer ' s rendering of "My pretty Jane" and Bro . Dilley ' s " Old Brigade , " being especially appreciated . Special thanks were accorded to Bro . Hollis , the Treasurer of the Testimonial Fund , and to Bro . Thos . C . Nunn , S . W . J Bro . Geo . Scudder , J . D . ; and Bro . G . Emblin , Hon . Sec , who had exerted themselves so zealously in arranging for the presentation and the very successful and happy gathering which had been enjoyed in connection with this graceful and deserved compliment .
At the last monthly meeting of thc members of thc Lodge of Loyalty , No . SG , now considerably over a century old , held at Prescot , near Liverpool , a presentation of a very gratifying nature was made to Bro . John Manley Barrington Spinks , an esteemed member of the lodge , in view of his earl y departure for New Zealand . In thc absence of Bro . John Bamford , the W . M ., who was prevented by business from being present , the chair was
taken by Bro . h . J . Brown , I . P . M ., and there was a large attendance of members of the lodge . The presentation took the form of a very handsomely illuminated resolution which had been passed at a previous meeting , as the following terms in which it was framed will show : " Lodge of Loyalty , No . SG . At the regular lodge meeting held at Prescot , on the 13 th day of September , 1 S 83 , it was reported that Bro . John Manley Barrineton Soinks
Droposed leaving England for New Zealand . Upon the motion of Bro . S . H . Hartley , S . W ., seconded by Bro . W . Newsome , P . M . 13 S 4 , it was unanimously resolved ' That an expression of the lodge ' s regret at Bro . Spinks ' s contemplated removal be entered on the minutes , together with the best wishes of the members for his future prosperity and happiness . ' Bro . Spinks ' s uniform kindness and charity and general uprightness ot conduct have
endeared him to all the members of this lodge in particular , and to the members of the Craft in general . " The resolution was signed on behalf of the lodge by the VV . M ., S . W ., J . W ., and Secretary . This parting memento of true fraternal feeling was illuminated and framed , the border containing various emblems of the Craft and a portrait of
Bro . Spinks . The initial letters were of burnished gold in colours , and a representation of the centenary jcwel ' of Ihe lodge was introduced . The work , which was greatly admired by the brethren , was prepared by Bio . lames Orr Marples , I . G . iGoy , whose artistic addresses presented to members of the Royal Famil y have met with universal marks of approval .
