Freemasonry In Namaqualand.

FREEMASONRY IN NAMAQUALAND .

A meeting of the Phcenix Lodge of Namaqualand , No . 2082 , was held on the 26 th ult . at the lodge room , O'okiep , for the purpose of installing the W . M . elect and investing the officers for the ensuing year . The lodge having been opened in dueform , Bro . Riddelsdell , D . G . Treas ., P . D . G . S . W ., was introduced , and installed the W . M . elect , Bro . W . W . Townsend , in the chair of King

Solomon according to ancient custom . The W . M . then appointed and invested as his officers Bros . E . Hodge , I . P . M . ; F . Phillips , S . W . ; J . M . W . Van Coeverden , J . W . ; Rev . G . Robson , Chap . ; G . G . Wrentmore , Treas . ; . M . Molesworth , Sec ; J . Burrows , S . D . ; Rev . R . C . Baily , P . P . G . Chap ., Org . ; J . L . Whiley and J . T . Anderson , Stewards ; W . Pearce , I . G . ; and H . Huthnance , Tyler ; the entire ceremony being conducted in a

very impressive manner . Bro . Is . Parker was then raised , the ceremony being ably performed by the W . M . and his newly-appointed officers , who thus showed that the prosperity and good government of the lodge was as likely to be assured under the new W . M . 's guidance as it was under that of Bro . Hodge , the late W . M . The brethren sat down to a well-appointed banquet provided in the Recreation-room , O'okiep , by Bro . J . L .

Whiley ; there being present , as visitors , Bros . Riddelsdell , H . W . Markham , and Capt . Hanson , the popular commander of the ss . Namaqua . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts having been given and heartily received , the WORSHIPFUL MASTER in proposing " The Health of the Installing Officer , Bro . Riddelsdell , P . D . G . S . W . and D . G . Treas ., " thanked him for his kindness in coming down to Namaqualand to perform

the ceremony , which was *) greatly appreciated by the brethren . Bro . RIDDELSDELL , in replying , said it had afforded him great pleasure to be present that day , owing to the manner in which the W . M . and Officers had carried on the working of the lodge , and he should be glad to visit them again on a future occasion . He then gave " The Health of the VV . M ., " who responded in a few appropriate

remarks , and then gave "The Health of the I . P . M ., Bro . E . Hodge , " to whom , on behalf of the members , he had much pleasure in presenting a Past Master's jewel , subscribed for by all the brethren in token of appreciation of his great services during his year of office . Bro . HODGE , P . M ., in reply , said he fully appreciated this kindness , the more so as it was quite unexpected , and surprise prevented his replying as he would have wished ;

but the predominant feeling in his mind was the gratification he felt at knowing the unanimity and good feeling which existed in the lodge at the completion of his year of office . The other toasts included " Our Sister Lodges and Visitors , " " The Outgoing Officers , " " The Incoming Officers , " "The Sisters , " " Absent Brethren , " and the Tyler ' s toast , after which lodge was closed , the remainder

of the evening being spent in singing , & o , and the brethren separated after a very enjoyable meeting . On the 27 th a ball was held in the Recreation Room , O ' okiep , which was largely attended by the fair sex , who showed their appreciation of Freemasonry by the predominance of Masonic colours displayed in their costumes . The room , both for the banquet and ball , was beautifully decorated with Masonic devices , flags , evergreens , and flowers , and reflected great credit on the late Secretary ,

Bro . G . G . Wrentmore , who had charge of the arrangements . A sumptuous supper was also provided . Dancing was kept up in a spirited manner until the small hours of the morning . On the Saturday afternoon , 28 th ult ., a juvenile party was given , at which the rising generation appeared in good force , and showed by their performances that the ball room had a promising future before it ; the tea , cake , & c , it need scarcely be mentioned , having ample justice done to it .

M ., " who responded in a few appropriate

remarks , and then gave "The Health of the I . P . M ., Bro . E . Hodge , " to whom , on behalf of the members , he had much pleasure in presenting a Past Master's jewel , subscribed for by all the brethren in token of appreciation of his great services during his year of office . Bro . HODGE , P . M ., in reply , said he fully appreciated this kindness , the more so as it was quite unexpected , and surprise prevented his replying as he would have wished ;

but the predominant feeling in his mind was the gratification he felt at knowing the unanimity and good feeling which existed in the lodge at the completion of his year of office .
