THE DEAN OF YORK ON FREEMASONRY .
The Very Rev . A . P . Purey Cust , Dean of York , lecturing at the Institute of Science and Art on the subject of "Heraldry" as exemplified in the stone carvings and Stained glass in York Cathedral , said : " The issues of life are too momentous and the dangers besetting humanity too many and complex to allow of our ridiculing and ignoring
any honest effort to grapple with them , even it it be in our own estimation , a little out of date . No doubt none are perfect , but at least they are worthy of our respectful attention and of our endeavours to discover and disentangle the legitimate motive and purpose from the abuses with which they may have become surrounded , or the follies into which they may have degenerated , or the misconceptions and
exaggerations which may have been circulated about them . I venture as an old Freemason to claim as much for Freemasonry , and as a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries , I ask the same for Heraldry . The aims of both are similar , though they adopted different illustrations , and , if quaint in conception , they are equally sound in principle ; though the latter , from the far more modern date of its foundation , is more exclusively and distinctly Christian . THE GAVEL CLUB .
INVITATION SMOKING CONCERT . Upwards of 200 Gavellers and their Masonic friends attended this concert on Wednesday last , at Freemasons ' Tavern , notwithstanding the dense fog which prevailed , and the difficulty many must have experienced in reaching the Tavern ; but those brethren who know the Gavel Club will brave much bad weather for the sake of spending an evening
with the most convivial of clubs . The concert was an admirable one in every sense , and opened with a part song , " The hunt is up , " by Bros . Schartau , Probert , Kift , and Hilton . Bro . Akehurst followed with a new song , " On the rolling wave , " and Bro . F . Gordon , with his sweet tenor voice , gave " Tell her I love her so . " Bro . James Bayne was so successful with " The skipper , " that an encore was demanded , when he gave " The press gang . " Bro . Chas ,
Townley ' s " Hi ! hi ! houp la ! " caused much amusement , as did also his encore , "My mother . " Bro . Robert Hilton , whose bass voice is so well known , then sang " Dearer than life , " the duet , " The moon has raised her lamp above , " by Bros . F . Gordon and Bayne , following . Bro . John Probert's " Always " resulted in an encore . A humorous song— " Helen ' s Babies "—by Bro . F . Silvester , and his encore , a parody on " Rule Britannia , " delighted
the audience , and closed the first part of the programme . The second part commenced with a part song , " Summer Eve , " by Bros . Schartau , Probert , Kift , and Bayne , Bro . Barrett following with a flute solo from " The Lil y of Killarney . " Perhaps , however , the event of the evening was the performance of Gaveller Arthur Coombes , who received quite an ovation . He first gave ahumorous song , entitled , "Oh , love , beautiful love , " and as an encore ,
"The dotlet of my eye , " including two verses on the Gavel Club written by himself , the latter creating roars of applause . The alto , Bro . Schartau , then sang "To a Nightingale , " which was so well rendered that an encore was called for , Bro . Odell much amused everyone with his two recitals . The ballad , " The last watch , " was very finely rendered by Bro . John Probert ( tenor ) , and Bro . Charles Townley ' s original humorous song , " They call me
the poor little Stowaway , concluded the programme . During the evening Gaveller SUDLOW , who presided , in a humorous speech proposed "The Visitors , " coupling with the same the name of Bro . Raymond Thrupp , who responded , saying that he was sure the Visitors had to thank the Gavel Club for an excellent concert and a most happy evening , and they must all feel grateful to Gaveller Pritchard , Hon . Sec . and Treas .,
for his admirable organisation , and also to Gaveller Combes , for the talent he , as Musical Director , had provided . Before resuming his seat he would ask the visitors to drink to "The Gavel Club , " and couple with the toast one of its leading members , the Hon . Sec . and Treas . Gaveller PRITCHARD responded , saying that the work connected with the concert had been a most pleasant duty ,
and he was sure the Committee , consisting of Gavellers Sudlow , Combes , and himself , was amply rewarded by the success of the evening . He then called for three cheers , which were most heartily given , for their much beloved and respected President , Gaveller Sudlow . Thus terminated the Gavel Club ' s first smoking concert , and we have no hesitation in stating that it ranks amongst the very best entertainments of its class .
