day . Were it not that his successor was a good working Mason , they would be sorry to lose their present Master . The VV . M ., after thanking the brethren for the reception they had given to the toast , said , in respect of the work done during the year , he only lvped he had borne out the expectations they had formed of him when 12 months ago they elected him to fill thc high and honourable position he
now occupied . He trusted that his work had satisfied them , and he could only say he had done his best lo please them in every way . He thankfully acknowledged the support he had received from the officers and brethren generally during his year of office ; and he thought he might say without egotism that the year had been as successful as many of its predecessors . He should have an opportunity of
saying more on the night of the installation of his successor ; and , as time was on the wing , he would content himself now with merely once more thanking them for their support and for the handsome manner in which they had appreciated his services by proposing a testimonial to him in the Iodge that evening . He then proposed , in felicitous terms , " The Initiates , " congratulating the lodge upon the acquisition of
four excellent members , one of whom had already made his mark in Parliamentary life . Bro . Isaacson , M . P ., responded in a lengthy and humorous speech , in the course of which he regretted he had lost many of the pleasures of this life , inasmuch as he should have joined the Craft 25 years ago . He was much impressed and gratified with the ceremony he had gone
through , and the solemn and impressive rites he had witnessed would be remembered by him to his latest hour . The other initiates also acknowledged the toa't in a few happily-chosen sentences . Bro . C F . Hogard , said the VV . M . had desired him to thank them for the liberal manner in which they had supported him as Steward for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , his list having reached within a feiv shillings of
£ 50 . That was tne largest amount ever given to start a fist with ; and he warmly advocated the claims of that important Charity . The Worshipful Master , in proposing " The Health of the W . M . Elect , " congratulated the brethren upon the wise selection they had made by choosing Bro . Solomon Jacobs as his successor in the chair . In him they had a
thorough good Masonic worker , a young man of great energy in everything he undertook , and a brother who had proved himself well worthy of the position to which they had elected nim . Bro . Jacobs having suitably responded , Bro . Hogard gave ' * The Benevolent Fund of the Lodge
of Israel , " which , atthe present time , amounted to just over £ 1000 . They had had heavy calls upon them during the year , between £ 70 and £ So having been disbursed amongst necessitous brethren . The fund was essentially for the benefit of poor brethren , members of the lodge who might need assistance ; and it was done in such a way that no brother except the Committee knew who it was that had
been relieved . The toast was acknowledged at some length by Bro . A . M . Cohen , the President of the Fund , who warmly exhorted the younger members of the lodge especially , to support the Fund . " The Visitors " were cordially welcomed , and the toast was responded to by Bros . Klinckenstein , Dale , Seigenberg ,
Loftus , and Amphlett . The other toasts were "The Past Masters , " and " The Officers of the Lodge . " The proceedings of the evening , which were throughout of the most harmonious and enjoyable character , were varied by some excellent singing by the brethren .

SHEPHERD'S BUSH LODGE ( No . 1828 ) . — The installation meeting of this lodge was held on Monday , the 22 nd inst ., under the presidency of Bro . W . Williams , W . M ., who was supported by his officers . The lodge having been opened , the minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed , after which Bro . Marsh was raised to the Third Degree . The Auditors' report was then read , which was considered highly gratifying to the
brethren , and creditable to the W . M ., who began his year of office with a deficit , and he now leaves the chair with a small surplus . Bro . J . C . Breitbart , the W . M . elect , was presented for installation , and duly installed into the chair of K . S ., the ceremony being performed by the W . M . Bro . Breitbart then invested his officers as follows : Bros . that gentleman was duly introduced and initiated . Bro Matier was then presented for installation , the ceremony being performed by Bro . Col . Shadwell H . Clerke . The W . M . appointed his officers as follows : —Bros . Lord Molesworth , S . VV . ; Richard Ellis , J . VV . ; Rev . Dr . Morris , Chap . ; Charles Belton , Treas . ; Charles H . Driver , Sec . ; J . VV . B . Price , S . D . ; J . VV . Eley , J . D . ; J . L . Mather , P . M ., D . C . and W . S . ; Dr . E . M . Lott , Hon . Org . ; Chas ,
Trebeck , I . G . ; Joseph Williams , Stwd . ; E . J . Mills , Tyler . Bro . J . L . Mather was presented with a P . M . jewel , and a similar presentation was made to Bro . Col . Clerke , the appropriateness of the latter gift being derived from the fact that the jewel bears thc arms of the Grand Secretary . Bros . Mather and Col . Clerke having returned thanks for the gift , the Iodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banquet at the Holborn Restaurant , which was
presided over by the W . M ., Bro . Matier . The toasts of "The Queen and the Craft , " and "The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , " having been duly honoured , the W . M . proposed that of "The Pro Grand Master , the Dep . Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past . " The toast , he said , was onc that was intimately connected with their own Iodge . They had both a present and past Grand Officer ,
Bros . Shadwell H . Clerke and Dr . Lott , a very fair sample of what the House of Lords of Freemasonry was—both exemplifying the services rendered to Masonry and the advantages derivable therefrom . Bro . Col . Shadwell H . Clerke replied . The toast , he said , was so continuously given that it was almost impossible to say anything fresh in response . The W . M . had suggested he should give a lecture on the "Advantages
of Freemasonry , ' but he could hardly do that , all he could say was that he was sorry so many good Masons should be kept out by the inexorable exigencies of figures , and although many were left out , those who did attain to Grand Office were deserving of the honour . He owed a very great debt of gratitude to _ that lodge , first by being honoured by the adoption of his name , and secondly for the kind reception he always met with .
Bro . J . L . Mather then proposed the toast of "The VV . M ., Bro . C . F . Matier . " His task , he said , was a very simple one . The subject of his remarks was so well known wherever Masonry flourished , that it was only left for him to say that the Shadwell Clerke Lodge was very fortunate in having such a Master to rule over them . Bro . Matier thanked the brethren for their reception of the toast , which had been proposed in such a kind and
flattering manner by Bro . Mather . He had , it was true , filled the chair on sundry other occasions , and he would promise them that the prosperity , dignity , and position of the Iodge should not suffer in his hands . Bro . Matier then proposed "The Health of the Visitors . " There were present Bros . A . M . Broadley , P . D . D . G . M . Malta ; Dawson , D . G . M . Hertfordshire ; Robt . Berridge , P . G . S . ; Rev . H . Cummings , P . P . G . Chap . ; Alfred
Williams , Augustus Harris , A . Tisley , and last , but not least , Bro . Stephen Harton Wilson , a name which , while Emulation working was known , would never die out in Masonry . Bros . Broadley and Augustus Harris replied . The Worshipful Master in giving the toast of "The Past Masters , " remarked that every one knew what an enormous debt of gratitude was due to the Past Masters of a lodge , and to the I . P . M ., Bro . Mather , their thanks were
especially due . They had both done their best to bring the Iodge to the state of prosperity they then enjoyed , and to Bro . Mellor , their first W . M ., they owed more than he could tell them . Bro . Mather replied . He had little to say about himself . He had endeavoured to render good suit and service to the Shadwell Clerke Lodge . They all knew what a large amount of interest he had taken in it , and he fully
appreciated the kindly feeling shown towards him , especially since he had been in the chair . Bro . Mellor , Q . C , also replied . vvhen , he said , the lodge did him the honour to nominate him as their first VV . M . he was not fit to be Inner Guard , but Bro . Matier and others took him in hand , and he had , with some anxiety and difficulty it is true , endeavoured to do his duty . The whole Craft was indebted to the Past Masters who filled the chair
of rCing Solomon with the wisdom of Solomon , and for himself he always spoke of them with reverence not unmixed with awe . He never could forget that the lodge took its name from one who was a most profound Mason and an accomplished gentleman . He felt it was a great honour to have first become acquainted with Masonry under such a distinguished name as Col . Shadwell Clerke . Bro . Mather then proposed the toast of "The Initiate , '
which was duly responded to . The next toast was that of " The Treasurer and Secretary , Bros . Belton and C . H . Driver . " The Treasurer had given a large amount of valuable time to the lodge , and Bro . Driver in his new duty would , he felt sure , be equally efficient . Bio . Belton replied , thanking the brethren very heartily for the kindly reception of the toast , which he fully appreciated .

Thoir number was small this evening , but that , no doubt , was on account of being Lord Mayor ' s day , He hoped they had all spent a pleasant evening . Bros . Lefeler and Beaufort Hinks replied .
The VVorshipful Master proposed "The Health of the Past Masters , " coupling with it the toast of " The Treasurer and Secretary , " who both replied . The VVorshipful Master next proposed "The Health of the Officers , " and , in doing so , spoke well of them all . Bro . T . A . Dickson , S . VV ., thanked the brethren for all their good wishes , saying he hoped to give great satisfaction to them all , and follow the good example set by their
VVorshipful Master , Bro . G . Rrynolds also thanked the brethren for the kind and hearty manner in which his health had been drunk , and also for the way in which the VV . M . had spoken of his Secretaryship to the lodge of instruction , in which he took great interest , and sincerely hoped to see many of their faces at the lodge of instruction on Thursday week , when their worthy Bro . E . Farwig , P . M ., would rehearse the ceremony of installation . Bro . E . Farwig being their first
Preceptor , he hoped there would be a good muster of brethren on that occasion . The T y ler's toast brought the enjoyable evening to a close , which was much enlivened by the vocal abilities of Bros . C Ralph , Wm . Bourne , "Initiates Song ; " C Tomlinson , James Woodward , T . R . Beaufort Hinks , Simeon J acobs , P . M . ; and the beautiful violin playing of Mr . VV . Fuller , accompanied by Bro . S . Lane on the piano , " Selections from Faust . "
Fisher , S . W . ; Wyett , J . W . ; Crowe , S . D . ; Manders , l . D . ; Bryett , P . M ., Treas . ; J ose , P . M ., Sec . ; j . G .

M . ; and to the brethren by Bro . Bryett , P . M . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to banquet , which was presided over by the newly-elected W . M . most efficiently and courteously , and the various toasts were proposed in astyle not generally expected from
a W . M . presiding for the first time—in fact , the VV . M . is a Master to perfection . The toast of " The Visitors " was responded to by Bros . Read , Davies , Spiegel , Williams , and Chalford . Bro . Read congratulated the brethren on the progress of the lodge , and complimented them on their working , as also on the acquisition of the W . M ., whom he ( Bro . Read ) had the pleasure to initiate in the Zetland Lodge . Bro , Davies , as the Preceptor of the Zetland Lodge ,
endorsed the remarks of Bro . Read . Bro . Spiegel said he would not mention the working ol the lodge or the abilities of the officers ; but he complimented them on their banquet ; and he expressed himself so satisfied , that he promised whenever they would treat him in a similar manner he would be there again . Several brethren contributed with songs and recitations , and everyone departed highly pleased and gratified . The visitors present included Bros . J . Read , P . M . 511 ; J . Davies , 169 ; M . Kendall , James Moon , George Cooper , and Lord Saltoun . The minutes of the last lodge were read and confirmed . A ballot was taken for Mr . G . f . Reed , as a candidate , and
that gentleman was duly introduced and initiated .
