District Grand Lodge Of Bengal.
DISTRICT GRAND LODGE OF BENGAL .
( Contimicdf page 3 O 9 ) . But even though every l odge in Bengal should in this way be able to present itself before His Royal Highness—( which of course will not be thc case)—it is naturally in Calcutta , not only as the Capital of India , but as the Headr Quarters of the oldest of thc five District Grand Lodges
which India and British Burmah now possess , —the oldest in fact , and the largest , ameng all the District Grand Lodges in the East—it is in Calcutta alone that anything like a really adequate ceremonial , a Masonic State reception , —if I may use the words—of our Grand Master , can , and should , take place .
This brings me to the iirst point for consideration by our Mofussil Lodges : —What arrangements can each lodge in Bengal make to send their Masters and Wardens , or other representatives , to Calcutta , to be present at an especial Grand Lodge , or other fitting ceremonial , for thc reception of our Grand Master ?
It is , of course , impossible to name any precise date now , but it would probably be about thc middle of December . " The next point wc have to think about is the question of expense . Without any attempt on my part to describe to you the various details of expenditure which must arise , it
will be evident to all of you , that in thc preparation and proper execution of such a ceremonial as the province , unless I am much mistaken , will desire should be compassed on such an unwonted occasion , a considerable expenditure will be enevitable .
Thc funds of District Grand Lotlge ( notwithstanding their present prosperous condition for ordinary needs ) will certainly not suffice to bear the whole strain , though of course all that it has will be at the disposal of the occasion .
I am disposed to think we shall need to raise at least Rs . 2000 . Considering that thc brethren in the Mofussil ( at any rate those who come down to Calcutta ) will have to bear expenses which will not fall upon those who arc resilient in Calcutta , it appears to mc that if the eleven Calcutta lodges would raise among them Rs . 1000 and thc sixteen Mofussil lodges the remaining Rs . 1000 , it would Wc a very
fair division of thc burden of expense . Will you then , Worshipful Masters of Lodges , both in Calcutta and in the Mofussil , take this subject of ways and means into your consideration , and will you kindly let me know what your views and feelings about the matter arc , and how far your respective lodges will be able to contribute cither in purse , or in person , or in both , towards attaining to a successful accomplishment of what is before u « .
My words now arc merel y with a view to inviting you to consider thc matter carefull y in all its aspects—I refrain purposely from entering into minute detail—I speak simply as it were to introduce thc subject , and I would ask you to scntl mc your own opinions upon it freely ami caiididl)—and ns early its you can . There is , however , one suggestion which 1 cannot
abstain from bringing forward . " Is this not a fitting time to make a final and determined effort , distinguished " from the tantalizing and unsatisfying 1 ) r <) jccls () f ' the past , for the erection of a Freemasons' 1 Iall in Calcutta , worthy of thc fraternity iu this ancient Province of Bengal ? Arc we ever , do you think , likely to have again sucil a favourable opportunity of bringing thc undertaking ( so often begun , but to be abandoned ) to . a successful issue ? fs there any
sort of ceremonial which we could organise for the Masonic reception of our Grand Master that could compare with one of which a portion should be his laying the first foundation stone in the N . W . corner of a Freemasons ' Hall , which should , let us say , bear his name and be thc lasting memorial of his visit lo the Metropolis of India , and the oldest and largest of thc Eastern Provinces of his Masonic rule r
