The Duke of Connaught had the rank of Honorary Past Grand Master of Scottish Freemasons in India conferred on him last week in Bombay . The Grand Lodge usually holds its annual meeting on St . Andrew ' s Day , but vvas postponed on this occasion to meet the Duke ' s convenience . It was the largest Masonic gathering yet held in India—500 European , Parsee , Mahomedan , and Hindoo brethren attended . There vvas a grand banquet in the evening .
LONDON FEVER HOSPITAL , LIVERPOOL-ROAD , N . — The Committee of this institution are called upon to provide daily all this Christmastide for nearly 100 patients , of all ages and both sexes , suffering from scarlet fever , diphtheria , and other forms of infectious disease . The Freemasons of Dudley have resolved to hold a grand Masonic ball in Dudley about the latter part of the month of February . The proceeds will be in aid of the scholastic Charities connected with the Craft .
Lord Salisbury arrived at the Foreign Office on Monday shortly after noon from Hatfield , and gave audiences to M . Waddington , the French Ambassador , and Senor Albareda , the Spanish Ambassador . Bro . Colonel Sewell ( vice-president ) occupied the chair on Tuesday , the 17 th inst ., at the dinner at the Horns , Kennington , of the Nautilus Swimming Club . A feature of the evening vvas the presentation to Mr . J . Payne , the Hon . Secretary , of an illuminated address and a silver cup in recognition of his valuable services . Mr . Payne subsequently presented the cup to the club as a challenge cup , his generous action naturally eliciting a storm of applause .
The Art Union of London has prepared a set of light etchings for presentation to every guinea subscriber , the artists being Messrs . F . Slocombe , W . AV . Burgess , C . E . Hollovvay , A . Morris , Percy Robertson , and M . VV . Ridley . Each etching is beautifully finished , but Mr . Holloway ' s
views of St . Paul ' s and Chelsea Old Church are worthy of special commendation . These etchings can hardly fail to secure to the Society a large number of new subscribers , who will be well satisfied therewith , even though they do not secure a prize at the annual drawing , to which the subscription also entitles them .
A grand ball was held at the Gwyn Hall , Neath , on the 19 th inst ., under the auspices of the Cambrian Lodge . The assembly , which vvas a brilliant one , vvas under the patronage of Bro . Sir George Elliot , P . G . M . Above the entrance from Orchard-street vvas an admirable gas device , representing the Masonic symbol . The steps leading to the
ball-room were beautified by dwarf shrubs , and the carpeting and drapery employed added a warmth of colour which was pleasing to the eye . The ball-room vvas beautifully decorated . Bro . R . A . Browning , P . P . A . G . S ., vvas M . C ., and performed his duties as a brother of his experience might be expected to do . The council chamber was converted into an admirable supper-room .
M . Alexandre Dumas , the eminent French dramatist , is a man of the utmost method and regularity in his daily life . He lives in a pleasant old house not far from the Champs Elysees . Dumas has a passion for cats , and some time back contributed an article to the Figaro extolling puss ' s virtues , and contrasting them with the qualities of
dogs—much to the disadvantage of the latter animal . Dumas in character is the very antithesis of his father , the great story-teller . He is the least emotional of living Frenchmen , and has a very low opinion of his fellowcountrymen—and women . In fact , the object of his life is to hold the mirror up to French Society and show it how debased and immoral it is .

Robert Browning's poems through the printer ' s hands , the gentleman whose duty it vvas to revise the proof sheets and see the edition through the press , himself a warm admirer of the poet , made several material alterations , not only in the punctuation , but in the text . On Monday evening the Lord Mayor and the Lad y Mayoress gave a party at the Mansion House to celebrate the coining of age of their second son , Mr . J . A . Isaacs .
The competition for the Thalberg Scholarship in connection with the Royal Academy of Music took place on Monday . There were 26 candidates , and the scholarship was awarded to Maude Rihll . The several lectures , classes , and studies of the Crystal Palace Company's School of Art , Science , and Literature , will be resumed after the Christmas vacation on the appointed dates , commencing Monday , January 6 th , 1 S 90 .
It is officially notified that Prince Albert Victor is unable to accept the hospitality of Freemasons' lodges in India . According to the revised itinerary his Royal Highness will reach Benares on Jan . 14 . A Masonic bazaar promoted by the Bruce Lodge , No . 593 , Friockheim , was opened on Tuesday in the New Public Hall , Arbroath , the object being to raise a fund wherewith to build a hall for the use of the lodge . The aim of the promoters of the bazaar is to raise a sum of from £ 300 to £ 400 , which they consider will be quite sufficient to
enable them to erect a building which will at once give the lodge ample accommodation ^ and prove an ornament to the village . It is likewise projected , should a satisfactory agreement be arrived at , to include rooms for the public library and a village reading-room . Should the promoters succeed in raising at least £ 300 , they are , we understand , prepared to spend £ 200 on the erection of the building .

The Freemasons of Dudley have resolved to hold a grand Masonic ball in Dudley about the latter part of the month of February . The proceeds will be in aid of the scholastic Charities connected with the Craft .
Lord Salisbury arrived at the Foreign Office on Monday shortly after noon from Hatfield , and gave audiences to M . Waddington , the French Ambassador , and Senor Albareda , the Spanish Ambassador . The journalistic Masons of the House of Commons gave another exceedingly pleasant dance at the Brixton Hall , Acre-lane , on Saturday last . This time about Go couples were indebted to the officers of the Gallery Lodge for their courtesy and genial exertions .

G ., Royal Artillery , now commanding at the Cape of Good Hope , succeeds to the Governorship of Malta , and that Lieutenant-General AV . G . Cameron , C . B ., succeeds to the Cape command . Lieutenant-General Cameron has lately returned from the command of the British troops in China ancl Hong Kong .
Bro . Colonel Sewell ( vice-president ) occupied the chair on Tuesday , the 17 th inst ., at the dinner at the Horns , Kennington , of the Nautilus Swimming Club . A feature of the evening vvas the presentation to Mr . J . Payne , the Hon . Secretary , of an illuminated address and a silver cup in recognition of his valuable services . Mr . Payne subsequently presented the cup to the club as a challenge cup , his generous action naturally eliciting a storm of applause .
The Art Union of London has prepared a set of light etchings for presentation to every guinea subscriber , the artists being Messrs . F . Slocombe , W . AV . Burgess , C . E . Hollovvay , A . Morris , Percy Robertson , and M . VV . Ridley . Each etching is beautifully finished , but Mr . Holloway ' s
views of St . Paul ' s and Chelsea Old Church are worthy of special commendation . These etchings can hardly fail to secure to the Society a large number of new subscribers , who will be well satisfied therewith , even though they do not secure a prize at the annual drawing , to which the subscription also entitles them .
A grand ball was held at the Gwyn Hall , Neath , on the 19 th inst ., under the auspices of the Cambrian Lodge . The assembly , which vvas a brilliant one , vvas under the patronage of Bro . Sir George Elliot , P . G . M . Above the entrance from Orchard-street vvas an admirable gas device , representing the Masonic symbol . The steps leading to the
ball-room were beautified by dwarf shrubs , and the carpeting and drapery employed added a warmth of colour which was pleasing to the eye . The ball-room vvas beautifully decorated . Bro . R . A . Browning , P . P . A . G . S ., vvas M . C ., and performed his duties as a brother of his experience might be expected to do . The council chamber was converted into an admirable supper-room .
M . Alexandre Dumas , the eminent French dramatist , is a man of the utmost method and regularity in his daily life . He lives in a pleasant old house not far from the Champs Elysees . Dumas has a passion for cats , and some time back contributed an article to the Figaro extolling puss ' s virtues , and contrasting them with the qualities of
dogs—much to the disadvantage of the latter animal . Dumas in character is the very antithesis of his father , the great story-teller . He is the least emotional of living Frenchmen , and has a very low opinion of his fellowcountrymen—and women . In fact , the object of his life is to hold the mirror up to French Society and show it how debased and immoral it is .
During the passage of the last edition of Mr . Robert Browning's poems through the printer ' s hands , the gentleman whose duty it vvas to revise the proof sheets and see the edition through the press , himself a warm admirer of the poet , made several material alterations , not only in the punctuation , but in the text . Mr . Browning by no means resented this , but ( so the London Correspondent of the
Liverpool Post says ) accepted the corrections made by this friendly censor in good part , and , indeed , appreciated the spirit in which they were undertaken , an appreciation which he expressed in the following characteristic letter : — " 29 , De Vere Gardens , June 5 , 18 S 9 . —I cannot return the revises of the last volume of my works without expressing

The contract for lighting the Houses of Parliament has been given the City of Westminster Electrical Syndicate ( Limited ) , and not to the Westminster Electric Supply Corporation ( Limited ) . On Monday evening the Lord Mayor and the Lad y Mayoress gave a party at the Mansion House to celebrate the coining of age of their second son , Mr . J . A . Isaacs .
The competition for the Thalberg Scholarship in connection with the Royal Academy of Music took place on Monday . There were 26 candidates , and the scholarship was awarded to Maude Rihll . The several lectures , classes , and studies of the Crystal Palace Company's School of Art , Science , and Literature , will be resumed after the Christmas vacation on the appointed dates , commencing Monday , January 6 th , 1 S 90 .
It is officially notified that Prince Albert Victor is unable to accept the hospitality of Freemasons' lodges in India . According to the revised itinerary his Royal Highness will reach Benares on Jan . 14 . There he will be received by Sir Auckland Colvin , and will be his guest for ro days at Benares , Lucknow , and Agra , leaving the last-nameil station on the 24 th .
At the regular meeting of the Lodge of Temperance , No . 169 , on the 19 th inst ., at theAVhite Swan Hotel , Bro . John Davies , S . W ., vvas unanimously elected AV . M . for the ensuing 12 months . There was a large number of members present , several of whom have had relatives either in office or Past Masters during the last 106 years , and under the guidance of Bro . A Masonic bazaar promoted by the Bruce Lodge , No . 593 , Friockheim , was opened on Tuesday in the New Public Hall , Arbroath , the object being to raise a fund wherewith to build a hall for the use of the lodge . The aim of the promoters of the bazaar is to raise a sum of from £ 300 to £ 400 , which they consider will be quite sufficient to
enable them to erect a building which will at once give the lodge ample accommodation ^ and prove an ornament to the village . It is likewise projected , should a satisfactory agreement be arrived at , to include rooms for the public library and a village reading-room . Should the promoters succeed in raising at least £ 300 , they are , we understand , prepared to spend £ 200 on the erection of the building .
