Bro . J . C . Smith , W . M ., sincerely thanked the brethren for their flattering reception of the toast , and assured them that he had the interests of the lodge at heart . He had never had a prouder moment in his life than when they elected him Master of such a flourishing lodge . He was the first Master who had attained that position who had been initiated in the lodge , and this fact was a source
of very great pleasure to him . He would do his best to fulfil the duties of the chair to their satisfaction , and was certain he could rely on them for their assistance during his year . He again sincerely thanked them for their reception of the toast . The next toast it was his privilege and pleasure to propose was " The I . P . M . ( Installing Master ) and Past Masters , " and he considered that the best thanks
of the brethren were due to the I . P . M . for his valuable services during the past year . There was a small muster of Past Masters present , as death had removed some , while private business had prevented others from attending . However , they were well represented , especially in Bro . brethren for their kindness during his year of office , and also for the handsome jewel they had presented him with . Bro . Stiles , P . He
was the first Secretary of the lodge , and hoped it would continue to progress and always maintain the proud position it now held . Bro . Binckes , Sec . R . M . I . warmth displayed in that lodge , but he considered that an occasion like the present was nothing without warmth and enthusiasm . On behalf of the visitors he heartly thanked the lodge for its hospitality . Several other brethren responded , and returned thanks for the hearty reception accorded the visitors . importance , from the exceptional circumstance that one of the most valued , zealous , and generous Past Masters had been chosen for a second time within very few years to preside over this prosperous lodge . W ., responded in a most interesting speech , referring to his Mastership of the lodge some 30 years ago , and contrasting the then small number of its members with its
present number and condition , and referring to the remarkable change which had taken place in Freemasonry during that period , especially the changed and more liberal support now given to the central Charities . He remembered the day when some of the more eminent brethren , apparently forgetful of the principles on which the Craft is based , tabooed the support of the great Charities , lest Masonry should sink into and become a friendly society ; and
congratulated the brethren upon the adoption universally of better principles , and upon these better days , when about £ 55 , 000 is subscribed for the central charitable purposes b y the Masonic Brotherhood , independently of the Provincial Charities , which have resulted in so much charitable good and great individual benefits . VV . Bro . B . Fountain , P . M . and Treas ., P . P . G . P ., then proposed the toast of the evening , "The W . M ,, " in an
earnest Masonic speech , eulogising Bro . BarrelPs zealous work in Masonry from the time of his initiation , both within and without the lodge , especially alluding to his previous year as P . M . as a most memorable one in the annals ot the lodge ; to the great services rendered to the lodge during three or four years as Hon . Secretary ; to his uniform fraternal courtesy , generosity , and work as a P . M . ; his liberality to the lodge , and his able
representation of the lodge in Provincial Grand Lodge . Bro . Barrell ' s selection for the chair a second year was warmly commended , and the speaker , amid the plaudits of the brethren , appropriately styled the occasion as a " red-letter day " in the history of the lodge , and wished the W . M . health and _ happiness , not only for the lodge , but for his own and his home ' s sake . The toast was cordially received , the brethren singing
" Prosper the Art , " and Bro . J . H . Tasker , W . M . 272 , singing capitally " Speak of a man as you find him . " Bro . Barrell , W M ., responded in a feeling and fraternal speech , thanking the brethren for the great cordiality and good Masonic feeling shown towards him , and expressing his heartfelt appreciation of the honour conferred by being elected a second time into the chair . Bro . Barrell warmly thanked his brother P . M . ' s and the officers and brethren generally for the support so readily accorded him in his work in the past , and assured them

" Prosper the Art , " and Bro . J . H . Tasker , W . M . 272 , singing capitally " Speak of a man as you find him . " Bro .
