PLTJMSTEAD . —Pattison Chapter ( No . 913 ) . ¦ —The quarterly convocation of the above influential chapter—the largest in the province of Kent—took place on Thursday , 21 st ., at the High School for Boys , Brook , hill , and was attended by the followingcompanions : Comps . R . Edmonds , M . E . Z . ; W . Rees , H . ; E . B . Hobson , J . 5 C Coupland , P . Z ., P . P . G . J . Kent ; E . Denton , P . Z .. P . P . G . P . S . Kent : A . Penfold , P . Z ., P . P . Kent , Treas . ; H . J . Butter , P . Z ., P . P . G . P . S . Kent , S . E . ; T . D . Hayes , P . Z ., P . P . G . 2 nd A . S . Kent ; H . Mason , P . Z . ; R . J . Cook , S . N . ; J . H . Roberts , P . S . ; E . Palmer , 1 st A . S . ; C . Clapliam , H . Shaw , P . Z . 13 ; I . Farrier , J . Topp , W . Harris , G . Frost , W . T . Richardson , Dr . H . L . Bernays . J . Hooton , G . Nichols , C . Ellis , D . C . Capon , and C Jolly , all of the lodge ; the only visitor being G . Kenneday , M . E . Z . elect , is .

The chapter having been opened , and the companions admitted , the minutes of the previous convocation were confirmed . The ballot was then taken for Bro . G . Porter , of 700 , and proving unanimous , that brother was exalted with all the full ceremonial for which the chapter is renowned , and which was splendidly and faultlessly rendered by the three Principals , and the subordinate officers . Five guineas was then voted to Bro . A . Spencer ' s P . G . Sec .

Kent list for the forthcoming festival of the Benevolent Institution , and the chapter was closed in due form . The banquet was held in the hall , and was in every detail elegantly appointed and served , and then the usual loyal and Grand Chapter toasts were honoured and drank with enthusiasm . In proposing the toast of " Lord Holmesdale , Grand Supt . of Kent , " the M . E . Z . said the toast was one that

always called forth their warmest expressions of loyalty to his lordship , whose portrait was always with them at both their Craft and chapter meetings , and who must be a good and earnest Mason , otherwise he would not have held the exalted positions he held in the province , and had held for the last three and twenty years . He ( the M . E . Z . ) in their and his own name , wished their G . S . many years of health and strength to still rule and govern the Masons of Kentboth

, as G . M . and G . Supt . The next toast was that of " The G . H . of the Province , M . E . Comp . liastes , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " and in giving it , the M . E . Z . said it was an old saying that , " a bird in the hand was worth two in the bush , " but they were fortunate enough to have that night no less than five birds in their bush , one of whom had held the distinguished position of G . H . of the province .

As a chapter they ought , and indeed did , feel proud of such an array of P . Z . ' s , who were past officers of Provincial Chapter , and who also had so well served the chapter in their respective years of office . He then referred to the indefatigable exertions of Comp . Coupland as their Charity representative , and also to the Stewardship of Bro . Spencer , as above shown , and concluded by saying that if they had anything individually to give to his list that brother would

receive it with pleasure . M . E . C . Coupland responding , and in so doing , assured the companions that what little he had done in the cause of Charity was done gladly , because he believed it to be the fundamental principle upon which Masonry was based . He was especially glad to think the cause of the Old Women was taken up by Bro . Spencer , because he knew the Charity was in great need of funds , and in the hands of

that brother nothing would be left undone to take a goodly sum up on his list , in aid of the Institution . For himself , he thanked them most cordially for the hearty manner in which the toast had been received , and would leave further response in the hands of his colleagues . M . E . C . Hyes also briefly returned thanks , and like the other Grand Officers present , felt proud of his and their positions in P . G . Chapter , and they would always be

loyal subjects , and reverance their chief as the guiding star of Masonry in the province of Kent . M . E . C . Mason then proposed the toast of "The M . E . Z ., " who he said was " most excellent , " both in his working and the genial manner in which he presided over them at the festive board , As to the work done that night , he could safely say that , good as their working always was , that night ' s work had eclipsed anything he

had ever seen in or out of the chapter , and must have taken a lot of Comp . Edmonds's time to have mastered it as he bad . He asked them to rally round and support their M . E . Z . through his year of office , so as to maintain the chaptet ' s proud position — being that of the largest , strongest , and most influential in the province . The M . E . Z ., in response , thanked them for their marked favour . It had always been his endeavour in every office

he had held to do his duty to his own and their satisfaction , but must confess that his efforts would not have succeeded , at least for that night , without the valuable assistance he had received from his officers , who had rendered their portions of the ceremony to perfection . It had been said that " trifles make perfection , " and if a M . E . Z . or Master had doubts as to the efficiency of his officers , or if they Were really inefficient , even in trifles , there could not be

perfection , but he knew they were efficient , and it gave him confidence . He would therefore conclude by thanking them for their hearty reception of the toast , and ask them to drink the toast of "The First and Second Principals , " which was done in bumpers . The other toasts were "The Past Principals ; " "The Exaltee ; " "The Visitors ; " and "Officers . " The Janitor ' s toast concluded the proceedings .

had ever seen in or out of the chapter , and must have taken a lot of Comp .
