The favour of your Votes and Interest is earnestly solicited on behalf of ELIZABETH MARY LANGLEY , 71 years of age , residing at 102 , Cowley Road , Brixton , widow of the late Bro . William Langley , who was for many years manager of the Queen ' s Hotel , Hastings , and afterwards in business at Canterbury . _ The late Bro . Langley was initiated in the Derwent Lodge , No . 40 , Hastings , on the 13 th March , ISO ' s , and was installed W . Master of the Lodge on the 13 th January , 1873 . He continued a Subscribing Member until May , 1879 , when hewas compelled to resign , owing to failing health and serious monetary losses . He was for two years M . E . Z . of the Chapter of Emulation , No . 40 , and was also a Mark Master Mason . He was a Life Governor of the Boys' School , besides having been a frequent Subscriber to the other Masonic Charities . His misfortunes compelled Wm to become a Candidate for the Annuity of the R . M . B . I , in May last , but he died just before the Election , leaving his widow ( the present Candidate ) quite unprovided for . and she is now dependent only on the solicitude of a few friends . Dear Sir and Brother , I am pleased to see that some one has taken up the subject of the visitors' greeting to the lodge visited , as I have frequently put in an appearance both to lodge and chapter on my sojourn in London , and it used to be my proud privilege to offer the " Hearty good wishes" of my lodge or chapter until I was quietly " sat on" by an

eminent brother , whom 1 win not name , out who perhaps may remember the circumstance when he reads this letter in your valuable paper . The occasion I refer to was when visiting a chapter 1 gave the " Hearty good wishes " from my chapter . The M . E . Z ., in open chapter , asked me who authorised me to do so ; I replied that , as the M . E . Z . of my chapter , I required no authority . He then said that , unless a biothet was authorised by the members assembled in lodge or chapter to take such greetings to a lodge or chapter he intended to visit , it was quite in antagonism with Masonic custom to do so , and he hoped other visitors would remember this on future occasions .
