THE DUKE OF YORK continues to improve in health , and the cold from which he was suffering has almost left him . His sister , the Princess Louise , Duchess of Fife , arrived early in the week at Sandringham on a visit to the Princess of Wales and the Princesses Victoria and Maud .

THE COUNTESS OF WARWICK opened a bazaar and a series of entertainments in the new buildings of the Children's Hospital on Paddington-green , on Thursday , with the object of raising funds to furnish the wards . The Duchess ot Teck has accepted an invitation to open the new buildings on July 1 st .

A MARRIAGE is arranged and will shortly take place between Lily , only surviving daughter of our venerable and highly esteemed Bro . Charles Veal , Stanmore , P . M ., Sec , and one of the founders of the Abercorn Lodge , No . 1549 , and Bro . James C . Lake , jun ., of 3 , Great Queenstreet , W . C , and Kew , late Rye Lodge , No . 2272 . ~

IT WAS ANNOUNCED at the recent meeting of the fellows of the Royal Botanic Society that their grounds would be opened to the general public on Whit Monday on payment of sixpence per head , and though a resolution to extend the opening to two or three days a week was lost , it is believed that before long something of a satisfactory nature will be done .

A CONCERT will be held at the Queen's Hall , Langhamplace , to-morrow ( Saturday ) evening in aid of the Maintenance Fund of the Morley House Caxton Wing in connection with the Morley House Seaside Convalescent Home , St . Margaret's'Bay , Dover . The Caxton Wing will be opened by the President , the Hon . VV . F . D . Smith , M . P ., in May next .

IHE EMPRESS FREDERIC OF GERMANY terminated her visit to this country on Saturday last . Her Majesty drove from Buckingham Palace to Charing Cross in the afternoon , among those assembled at the station to bid her farewell being the Duchess of Albany and Bro . Lord Edward Pelham Clinton . The train reached Port Victoria at 7 . 30 , from whence the Royal yacht Victoiu and Albert sailed , in boisterous weather , for Flushing .

ON SATURDAY , Bro . Dr . Salmon , J . P ., D . L ., of Penllyne Court , near Cowbridge , Glamorganshire , attained his 105 th birthday . Bro . Dr . Salmon was born in 1790 at Wickham Market , and is the oldest member living of the College of Surgeons , and the oldest Freemason in the

world . He was one ot the youngest surgeons in the army of George III . at the time of the battle of Waterloo , but was absent from the memorable fight , as he got married at the time . Bro . Dr . Salmon is in vigorous health , and retains all his faculties .

THE LODGES IN CHESTER have sustained a great loss by the death recently of Bro . Stephen Smith , who was buried on Monday , the iSth inst ., at the cemetery , where a large number of brethren assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to departed merit . THE DUCHESS OK YORK , attended by Lady Eva Grenville , was present at a numerously attended meeting at 14 , Grosvenor-crescent , on behalf of the sisters' and nurses' work in connection with the Trinity College ( Cambridge ) Mission .

THE DUCHESS OF TECK has very graciously consented to attend a drawing-room meeting convened by Bro . Sir J . Whittaker and Lady Ellis at Buccleuch House , Richmond , on Monday , the ist prox ., in the interests of the Ragged School Union . A SERIOUS gas explosion occurred at the premises of Sir Joseph Causton and Sons , law stationers , S , Portugalstreet , Lincoln ' s Inn Fields , on Monday morning , by which

Ada Simmons and William Walker were so seriously burnt about the face and hands that they had to be removed to King ' s College Hospital . The force of the explosion may be judged from the fact that the first floor windows of the house surgeon ' s residence at the hospital were completely wrecked . THE MATCH at Melbourne between the Victorians and Mr .

Stoddart ' s eleven terminated on Monday in a victory for the former by seven wickets . Score : Mr . Stoddart ' s eleven , 131 and 27 o ; Victoria , 26 9 and 136 for three wickets . Fortle English Mr . Ford made 1 and 85 , Brockwell 25 and 36 , whi ' e for Victoria Bruce compiled 42 and ( not out ) 72 : A . Trott 4 G and 44 ; Charles McLeod 52 , and Ferryman 40 . Ws ARE GLAD to see there is a further reduction in the mortality caused by influenza and diseases connected with the respiratory organs . According to the Registrar-General's returns for last week , the deaths caused by the former were 223 , or less than one-halt of what it was a fortnight previous , while the latter were responsible for 740 deaths , the death-rate for London having fallen to 2 G , as compared with 41 a fortnight earlier . These figures are still high , but it is a consolation to know that the tendency is in a downward directior .

AT THE ANNUAL MEETING of the Accident Insurance Company , Limited , the directors reported that the income for the year ending 31 st December , 1894 , amounted to f 51 . 377 IOS . 7 d . The claims paid amounted to 22 , 278 iSs . 7 d ., and the bonus allowances to

policyholders to , 1 , 3484 3 s . sd . A bonus of five per cent ., free of income tax was declared , making with the interim interest already paid , 10 per cent , for the year , while a sum equivalent to three per cent , was set aside to increase the paid capital account . The assets of the company at the end of the year amounted to £ 71 , 593 3 s . od .

• A GRAND BAZAAR AND FANCY FAIR will be held at Brownlow House and Grounds , Lurgan , on Monday , the 24 th June , and three following days , the object which the promoters have in view being to raise funds sufficient for the erection of a Masonic Hall , suitable for the requirements cf the lodges which meet in the town of Lurgan , namely—Acaca , St . John ' s , and Ulidie , being Nos . 24 , 134 , and 151 respectively on the roll of Grand Lodges of Ireland . The programme of the entertainments which will be offered is both varied and attractive .

I HE DUCHESS OF FIFE , who was accompanied by her husband Bro . the Duke of Fife , opened a grand bazaar at the Cannon-street Hotel on Wednesday in aid of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society . Bro . Alderman Sir J . Dimsdale presided , and among the Reception Committee by whom her Royal Highness was escorted to the dais were the Sheriffs of London , the United States Ambassador , and the Swedish and Norwegian Minister . Contributions from

the Duke of York , the Princess of Wales , the German Emperor , the Khedive of Egypt , the British India Company , Sir Donald Currie , the P . and O . Company , and others , to the amount of £ 1500 out of the . £ 4 , 000 required by the Society for their work were announced by the Secretary before the bazaar was opened . After an address of welcome had been read by Bro . Archdeacon Sinclair , the Princess received purses from sundry children , and then

presented a gold watch and chain to Miss Anna Backer , the only lady passenger saved from the Elbe , who , in gratitude for the kindness she has received from the Society , was helping at the German stall . THE annual general meeting of the Royal National Life Boat Institution was held in St . Martin's Town Hall on Saturday , the 23 rd inst . The chair was occupied b y Lord Tweedmouth , in the unavoidable absence , through illness ,

of Bro . the Earl of Derby , and there was a very large attendance ot Governors and friends of the Institution , The report , which was adopted unanimously , showed that during the past year G 37 lives had been saved by life-boats and 34 vessels rescued from destruction , while rewards had been granted for saving 141 l . ves by shore boats , the total number of lives saved since the establishment of the Institution being 37 , 854 . The income for the year , arising

from donations , subscriptions , dividends , special gifts , & c , amounted to £ 73 , 9 01 , and some valuable legacies had also been received , while the expenditure reached £ So , GSo . Great hopes appear to be entertained from the success which has hitherto attended the development of the Lifeboat Saturday movement , especially as the City of London ,

and the mercantile community , of which it is the centre , have taken up the cause . Nevertheless , the Committee earnestly appeal to the public to support them in their efforts to maintain this splendid Institution in its highest state of efficiency , and we trust their appeal will be responded to even more generously than in the past .

THE PRINCESS MARY ADELAIDE , Duchess of Teck , will visit Viscount and Viscountess Cantelupe at the Manor House , Bexhill-on-Sea , on the 10 th and nth May , her Royal Highness having promised to attend a concert at St . Leonard ' s on the nth May in aid of the fund for li quidating the debt on the Voluntary Church Schools at Bexhill .

THE ANNIVERSARY DINNER of the Institute of Civil Engineers was held in Merchant Taylors' Hall on Wednesday evening , under the presidency of Sir Robert Rawlinson . Among the principal guests were the Duke of Cambridge , the Duke of Teck , the American Ambassador , the Marquis of Salisbury , and Bros . Sir Redvers Buller , Sir F . Abel , John Aird , M . P ., and Sir Lintnrn Simmons .

THE Oxford and Cambridge boat-race will take place over the usual course from Putney to the Ship at Mortlake to-morrow ( Saturday ) afternoon . The start will be at 4 p . m ., and the arches at Putney Bridge will be closed to all traffic at 3 . 15 p . m . The steamers following the race will , as usual , be four in number , one for Oxford , one for Cambridge , and the Umpire ' s and Press boats .

THE RACE for the Prix de laVUIe de Nice , which had been postponed from a previous day in consequence of the weather , was sailed on Wednesday , the competing yachts being the Britannia , Ailsa , and Valkyrie . After a very fine race , in which the Ailsa maintained the lead for two out of the three rounds that were covered , the Brilannia ciossed the line some eight minutes in front of her plucky opponent , the Valkyrie being miles behind .

THE HONOURS of a Masonic funeral were accorded to the remains of a well-known and much respected Keswic !< townsman on Monday afternoon , the iSth inst . Bro . Thos . Usher , coach agent and shoemaker , Main-street , died somewhat suddenly on Saturday morning , the 16 th inst . He had acquired some local fame as a tenor singer and

attended a practice of the Choral Society as late as Friday evening , immediately previous to his death . He took a great interest in most local affairs , and was a member of the Greta Lodge . His funeral was attended by brethren from other towns in the province . Canon Rawnsley read the service , and Aliss Freeman played the Dead March in "Saul . "

MISS MINNIE BREWSTER ' FIRST CONCERT , given on Monday , the iSth inst ., at the Parish Hall , Acton , was a great success . All available space was fully occupied by an enthusiastic audience , and encores were the order of the evening . Miss Brewster ' s beautiful rendering of " The

Flight of Ages" was highly appreciated and an encore demanded , which was responded to with "Dolly ' s Revenge , " given in perfect style . Miss Brewster was supported by Bros . Harry , Arthur , and Howard Musgrave , who all rendered loyal service , and tended to make the entertainment an unqualified success .

THE LIVERPOOL DRAMATIC LODGE , NO . 1609 , which has been in existence for nearly 20 years , has always held a well-established reputation for its works of Charity and the thoroughly representative character of its members , embracing as it does brethren who are prominently identified with the drama , music , medicine , literature , and the fine arts . Tuesday ' s meeting of the Dramatic , at the

Masonic Hall , was especially interesting , as the assembly represented in a large measure all the professions above named . The gathering numbered about 60 brethren , Uro . IT WAS ANNOUNCED at the recent meeting of the fellows of the Royal Botanic Society that their grounds would be opened to the general public on Whit Monday on payment of sixpence per head , and though a resolution to extend the opening to two or three days a week was lost , it is believed that before long something of a satisfactory nature will be done .

IHE EMPRESS FREDERIC OF GERMANY terminated her visit to this country on Saturday last . Her Majesty drove from Buckingham Palace to Charing Cross in the afternoon , among those assembled at the station to bid her farewell being the Duchess of Albany and Bro . Lord Edward Pelham Clinton . The train reached Port Victoria at 7 . 30 , from whence the Royal yacht Victoiu and Albert sailed , in boisterous weather , for Flushing .

ON SATURDAY , Bro . Dr . Salmon , J . P ., D . L ., of Penllyne Court , near Cowbridge , Glamorganshire , attained his 105 th birthday . Bro . Dr . Salmon was born in 1790 at Wickham Market , and is the oldest member living of the College of Surgeons , and the oldest Freemason in the

world . He was one ot the youngest surgeons in the army of George III . at the time of the battle of Waterloo , but was absent from the memorable fight , as he got married at the time . Bro . Dr . Salmon is in vigorous health , and retains all his faculties .

THE LODGES IN CHESTER have sustained a great loss by the death recently of Bro . Stephen Smith , who was buried on Monday , the iSth inst ., at the cemetery , where a large number of brethren assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to departed merit . Ws ARE GLAD to see there is a further reduction in the mortality caused by influenza and diseases connected with the respiratory organs . According to the Registrar-General's returns for last week , the deaths caused by the former were 223 , or less than one-halt of what it was a fortnight previous , while the latter were responsible for 740 deaths , the death-rate for London having fallen to 2 G , as compared with 41 a fortnight earlier . These figures are still high , but it is a consolation to know that the tendency is in a downward directior .

AT THE ANNUAL MEETING of the Accident Insurance Company , Limited , the directors reported that the income for the year ending 31 st December , 1894 , amounted to f 51 . 377 IOS . 7 d . The claims paid amounted to 22 , 278 iSs . 7 d ., and the bonus allowances to

policyholders to , 1 , 3484 3 s . sd . A bonus of five per cent ., free of income tax was declared , making with the interim interest already paid , 10 per cent , for the year , while a sum equivalent to three per cent , was set aside to increase the paid capital account . THE annual general meeting of the Royal National Life Boat Institution was held in St . Martin's Town Hall on Saturday , the 23 rd inst . The chair was occupied b y Lord Tweedmouth , in the unavoidable absence , through illness ,

of Bro . the Earl of Derby , and there was a very large attendance ot Governors and friends of the Institution , The report , which was adopted unanimously , showed that during the past year G 37 lives had been saved by life-boats and 34 vessels rescued from destruction , while rewards had been granted for saving 141 l . ves by shore boats , the total number of lives saved since the establishment of the Institution being 37 , 854 . The income for the year , arising

from donations , subscriptions , dividends , special gifts , & c , amounted to £ 73 , 9 01 , and some valuable legacies had also been received , while the expenditure reached £ So , GSo . Great hopes appear to be entertained from the success which has hitherto attended the development of the Lifeboat Saturday movement , especially as the City of London ,

and the mercantile community , of which it is the centre , have taken up the cause . THE Oxford and Cambridge boat-race will take place over the usual course from Putney to the Ship at Mortlake to-morrow ( Saturday ) afternoon . The start will be at 4 p . m ., and the arches at Putney Bridge will be closed to all traffic at 3 . 15 p . m . The steamers following the race will , as usual , be four in number , one for Oxford , one for Cambridge , and the Umpire ' s and Press boats .

THE RACE for the Prix de laVUIe de Nice , which had been postponed from a previous day in consequence of the weather , was sailed on Wednesday , the competing yachts being the Britannia , Ailsa , and Valkyrie . After a very fine race , in which the Ailsa maintained the lead for two out of the three rounds that were covered , the Brilannia ciossed the line some eight minutes in front of her plucky opponent , the Valkyrie being miles behind .

THE HONOURS of a Masonic funeral were accorded to the remains of a well-known and much respected Keswic !< townsman on Monday afternoon , the iSth inst . Bro . Thos . Usher , coach agent and shoemaker , Main-street , died somewhat suddenly on Saturday morning , the 16 th inst . He had acquired some local fame as a tenor singer and

attended a practice of the Choral Society as late as Friday evening , immediately previous to his death . He took a great interest in most local affairs , and was a member of the Greta Lodge . His funeral was attended by brethren from other towns in the province . Canon Rawnsley read the service , and Aliss Freeman played the Dead March in "Saul . "

MISS MINNIE BREWSTER ' FIRST CONCERT , given on Monday , the iSth inst ., at the Parish Hall , Acton , was a great success . All available space was fully occupied by an enthusiastic audience , and encores were the order of the evening . Miss Brewster ' s beautiful rendering of " The

Flight of Ages" was highly appreciated and an encore demanded , which was responded to with "Dolly ' s Revenge , " given in perfect style . Miss Brewster was supported by Bros . Harry , Arthur , and Howard Musgrave , who all rendered loyal service , and tended to make the entertainment an unqualified success .

THE LIVERPOOL DRAMATIC LODGE , NO . 1609 , which has been in existence for nearly 20 years , has always held a well-established reputation for its works of Charity and the thoroughly representative character of its members , embracing as it does brethren who are prominently identified with the drama , music , medicine , literature , and the fine arts .
