wards , P . M ., Org . ; E . A . Cumberland , P . M ., Sec ; and J . W . Green , P . * M ., Steward . The first act of the new VV . M . was to present on behalf of the lodge a Past Masters jewel to W . Bro . Alfred Atkins in acknowledgment of his skill and ability as W . M . during the past year ; and the I . P . M . returned thanks . The jewel was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning ; Little Britain , London . The lodge was closed after a
feu de joie of " hearty good wishes" from the visiting brethren . The banquet took place in the Town Hall , under the presidency of W . Bro . A . S . Ewen , when between 40 and 50 were present . Abundant and tasteful floral decorations testified to the good will of lady friends to the Craft . The Worshipful Master gave the toasts of " The Queen and the Craft ; " "The Most Worshipful the Grand
Master ; " and "The M . W . the Pro Grand Master and Officers of Grand Lodge" in felicitous terms , and they were cordially received and followed by appropriate musical selections . The I . P . M . proposed "The Health of the W . M ., " remarking on the Masonic spirit which had characterised Bro . Ewen ' s life , and the happy circumstances which had identified him with the Craft , and thus afforded scope for
the manifestation and extension of his works of brotherly love , relief , and truth . He anticipated a good year for the lodge under the newly-installed W . M ., and that the true principles of the Order would find copious expression from his leadership . The toast was warmly received . The Worshipful Master acknowledged the kindness of the brethren , and expressed his earnest desire to fulfil the
important duties of his office well and to their satisfaction . He expressed some regret that the Bedfordshire lodges were still disunited through not having a Provincial Grand Lodge , and hoped that the intercourse of the different lodges by their officers would eventually make a Provincial Grand Lodge generally acceptable . Bro . J . Cumberland , P . M ., in generous terms proposed " The Visiting Brethren . "
Bro . A . J . Hills replied , and said he understood that the elders in his lodge ( St . Andrew , Biggleswade , ) were opposed to a Bedf orshire province ; he did not know why , but said he was too young a Mason to dispute their judgment . Although Senior Warden he had , according to his statement , seen but very little Masonic work . He expressed his satisfaction with what he had seen that day , and hoped that further opportunities would be afforded him of
seeing the ceremonies performed . W . Bro . J . Gladwell , W . M . 1490 , remarked that he was a frequent visitor and always enjoyed the lodge work and the kindly feeling displayed by the brethren . Bro . E . P . Francis , Hertford Lodge , a new visitor , highly complimented the Installing Master on the way the important ceremony had been performed , and concurred in Bro . GladwelTs expression of happiness at the reception
accorded to the visitors . 'The Worshipful Master proposed " The Installing Master , the I . P . M ., " and remarked that he had skilfully worked the Three Degrees during his year , and had now done the installation in a manner such as he had not seen excelled , although he had seen it done well before and at other lodges . Not only that , but the geniality with which he presided as W . M . had made the lodge meetings very
Iileasant to the brethren . The I . P . M . briefly expressed the pleasure it had afforded him to promote the welfare of the lodge . The W . M . gave "The Past Masters , " and Bro . J . Cumberland responded . The I . P . M . proposed "The Officers of the Lodge , "
testifying to their assiduity and kindness throughout the past year ; and the S . W . and J . W . replied . ' As an innovation " The Ladies " was humorously given by Bro . A . J . Hills , and Bro . Hugh Cumberland replied on their behalt . The Tyler ' s toast and "Auldlang syne " concluded a very pleasant meeting .
WOOLWICH . —Florence- Nightingale Lodge ( No . 706 ) . —The installation meeting- of the above lodge took place on Friday , the 22 nd inst ., at the Masonic Hall , William-street , and was in every way a great success . In the absence of the W . M ., Bro . Major Gordon , at present with his battery in India , Bro . J . Black , I . P . M ., presided , and installed Bro . G . Mathams , S . W ., W . M . elect , in rare style . The W . M . invested the following as his officers for
the ensuing 12 months : Bros . Capt . J . Sculley , S . W . ; Dr . C . H . Y . Godwin , J . W . j Sydney Clarke , P . M ., Treas . ; E . Denton , P . M ., P . P . G . P . Kent , Sec ; A . Burnett , S . D . ; Dr . H . Bernays , J . D . ; Rev . C . Roberts , Chap . ; N . D . Livesay , I . G . ; F . G . Nichols , Org . ; K . Ugland , D . C . ; and J . Lackland , Tyler . The Worshipful Master said there was a very pleasant duty that always fell to the new Master of a lodge , and he
felt sure that the brethren would agree with him that it was one that was heartily deserved . Ihat duty was to present the I . P . M . with the jewel of his office ; but unfortunately their esteemed I . P . M . was in India , and so he ( the W . M . ) would not have the pleasure that otherwise would have fallen to his lot . However , he trusted before long to see Bro . Gordon back among them , when he would receive the jewel he had so well and worthily earned at their hands .
Bro . Sydney Clarke , P . M ., then briefly proposed a vote of thanks to Bro . Black for the excellent manner in which he had carried out the duties of Installing Officer . Bro . Black had again rendered them the service he so well performed last year , and he . felt that the thanks of the lodge were due to him for so doing . Bro . Mutch , P . M ., seconded , and it was carried unanimously .
In response Bro . Black said he was exceedingly pleased to hear that the brethren appreciated his efforts , although he was not quite satisfied with himself . He also desired to thank Bro . Clarke for his kind expressions of regard , especially as Bro . Clarke presented him as a candidate for initiation in the lodge . The banquet was supplied by Bro . Moulder , and was worthy of his fame as a caterer . Among those present
besides the brethren above-mentioned were Bros . W . Gompertz , P . M . S 69 , P . P . G . P . Herts ; Dr . Sharpe , P . M ., P . M . S 51 , P . P . G . Swd . Br . Sussex ; Capt . Eugene Sweny , P . M . ; W . C . Claridge , P . M . 16 S 5 , S . W . 159 S , Sec . I 698 ; H . Mason , W . M . 913 ; T . Holleyman , W . M . 1536 ; G . Beaver , W . M . 700 ; Dr . J . Pope , P . M . 946 ; G . Kenneday , W . M . elect 1536 ; J . H . Roberts , W . M . elect 700 ; T . Ovenden , J . W . 700 ; A . F . Saunders , J . W . 153 6 ; A . Joskey , 913 ; F . Bell , 1963 ; W . Mavor , 905 ; Dr . Bot-

terell , G . Risch , W . Ayling , C . Cooper , J . B . Orr , and C . Jolly { Freemason ) . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts having been drunk , 'The I . P . M . rose to propose " The Health of the W . M . " He said those round that table knew , and had known for many years , their esteemed W . M ., and had had an opportunity of seeing how earnest he was in all things Masonic .
especially in the perfect carrying out the duties of the various offices he had held in the lodge , and he ( Bro . Black ) had every confidence that now Bro . Mathams had arrived at the position of VV . M . the lodge would not suffer at his hands , but rather go On and prosper even more than under his predecessors . He most heartily , both for them and himself , wished Bro . Mathams a good and
prosperous year of office , and felt sure he would be a worthy successor to Bro . Gordon . The Worshipful Master , in response , expressed the difficu ty experienced in sufficiently thanking them for their cordial reception of Bro . Black ' s toast . So far as his being able to emulate the services of their worthy I . P . M ., Bro . Gordon , he felt it almost impossible to do so ; especiall
y did he feel that he could never reach the high standard of his predecessor in carrying out the ceremonies , but as they had done him the honour to elect him , he would endeavour to so carry out the duties entrusted to him that they at least would not regret their kindness in the election . He asked the Past Masters to assist him as they had done his in the
predecessors past , and then he had no fear of the result . He regretted exceedingly the absence of Bro . Gordon , and should look forward to the time when their brother would come among them and receive his jewel . In conclusion he could onl y say as he had said before , that he should do his utmost to carry out the duties of the chair to their satisfaction .
In responding to the toast of "The Installing Officer , " eloquently put from the chair , Bro . Black said it was an attribute inherent in an Englishman to do his duty , whatever that duty might be , thoroughly well , and to the best of his abilities , and he trusted that he had done so . God grant that they might all be spared to meet that day 12 months , when he hoped to see Bro . Mathams install
his successor , and receive at their hands the same honour they had that night paid to him . He again thanked them and resumed his seat amid applause . The next toast was that of " The Past Masters , " and in putting it , the W . M . paid a high tribute to the unfaltering services rendered the lodge by Bros . Clarke , Denton , and Sweny .
Bro . Clarke said as the time was fast approaching when they must part , he would not take up too much of their time . He could only say that he felt a great pleasure in helping the VV . M . in any way and in carrying out the duties of Treasurer entrusted to him . Bro . Mason in responding for the " Visitors " wished it had fallen into more able hands . He thanked the W . M .,
Past Masters , and brethren of the Florence Nightingale Lodge for their excellent working , and the cordial hospitality offered to the visitors . He also especially wished to thank the lodge for the handsome donation of five guineas given to his list for the Boys' School . That was a glorious Institution , and its progress was wonderful . At the festival on Wednesday week , Lord Holmesdale , who presided ,
spoke of a previous occasion when he presided some 21 years ago ; then the sum subscribed amounted to £ 3670 . On that occasion they ridiculed Bro . Binckes , the Secretary , because he said he intended some day to make it up to £ 10 , 000 ; but what did they now think of the magnifient sum of upwards of £ 22 , 000 , subscribed and read out at the festival , with yet other lists to come in . It was a glorious
success , and again he thanked the Florence Nightingale Lodge for its generosity and hospitable welcome . Bros . Beaver and Holleyman also responded . The toast of the " Officers " followed , and Bros . Sculley and Godwin severally responded . "The Press " was honoured and then the Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings . Bro . Nichols presided at the piano and conducted the singing , which was most enjoyable .

'The Worshipful Master proposed " The Queen and the Craft , " and "The M . W . G . M . of England " was given in a loyal and suitable manner , and received with enthusiasm . wards , P . M ., Org . ; E .
M . 700 ; Dr . J . Pope , P . M . 946 ; G . terell , G .
