OA'er the leaf follows a list of names , one paying 2 s . 6 cl ., one paying Is . 6 d ., a list of " raised members , " 5 in number , in 1771 and 1772 , and 7 names , June 24 th , 17 G 2 , cither of members of tbe Order , of new membersor of those present on that
, date . The " Highrodiams " seem to us to be a corruption of "Harodim , " Avhat Domaskin or Forin may be , deponent cannot eA'en guess , Between pages 36 and 37 , so numbered , several leaves have been cut or torn aAvay ,
a subject of deep regret , as there must at least be twenty so missing . All that remains are seven rules , Avhich I transcribe , because signed by a large number of brethren . "June ye 24 th 1732 .
" 18 th . If any member dyetb after be become a real member 40 s . shall be alloAved for defraying his funeral charges , and 5 s , for bis widow , executors , administrators or assigns , to Avhich charge each subscribing member shall Is , next meeting after the
Interment or be excluded ' from the Society . " Curiously enough this is the actual sj'stem still of some modern "Dead Briefs , " as tbey are called in the north of England .
" 19 . That any member being within 2 miles of the place of tbe deceased shall in a solemn manner attend the corps to the grave wbei'e they shall deliver the tickets to the stewards then attending or forfeit
1 shilling . " 20 . In order to attend the funeral each member shall meet at tbe bouse Avhere the Society is kept , from Avhence they shall be conducted to the place Avhere the deceased is . Each member shall bear his own expenses .
" 21 . If any one happens to die before be hath been a year in the Society the money that he hath desposed in tbe box shall be returned towards his funeral charges . " [ Two lines are here erased . ] " 22 . For tbe more deacent attending a
funeral each member shall at his OAVII cxpence purchase a black , cape , hat band , and black gloves or forfeit 2 / G to ye box . " 28 . If any member neglecteth coming when invited to a burial or summoned upon any urgent occasion , except as aboA'e mentioned shall forfeit Isb . and this Society to continue to be such as long as any three members agree to hold the same . "

The folloAving is the subscription : — " We Avhose names are hereunder subscribed are agreeable to the foresaid articles as witness our hands June ye 24 th 1732 . "Matt Armstrong , Geo Gillespy , Jos

BroAvn , Joseph Clark , William Tods , John Dover . " It seems as if these rules Avere signed on entrance , as four columns of original signatures continue until August , 1773 . I might linger longer over this

much from newspaper reports , which at that time Avere not to be so much depended upon as in tbe present day . A correspondent of the "NeAvcastle Weekly Chronicle " noticing " a rather remarkable effort of descriptive reporting" in the present clay ,
says : — " In the Beecher-Tilton case , I noted Victoria Woodhull Avas summoned as a Avitness . The pressmen present seem to have sharpened their pencils when the apostle of free loA'e 'took the stand , ' as they say . In . varying words , they describe
her appearance ; and from five of the efforts of leading papers , kindly sent me , I cull the Avords relating to the dress of Victoria . Says the ; Sun' dogmatically , ' ber dress Avas black silk ; ' the ' Evening News' has it that ' she Avas dressed in a
dark blue promenade suit ; ' the ' Tribune ' will have it that she had on a ' dark purple dress ; ' the ' Telegram' emphasises the fact that she wore—if not a wreath of roses—
