The minutes of the previous Lodge h ^ ing been read and confirmee ! , the Lodge was opened in the second and
third degreesy when , in the unavoidable absence of the W . M ,, _ Bro . [ Naish , the chair was filled by gro . Everitt , P . M . ; and Bros . Ernest , Sherry , and Gerard were raised to the sublijiie degree of Master Mason in a most impressive manner . The Lodge was resumed in the firsLd ^ gree , when the report of the cominittee on the Masohie of schools was read , and f ally discussed . Bro . Sherry , P . M ., rose and read a portion Bro , Bir ^ ckes ' s remarks at the Stoneleigh Lodge , ( No . 1027 ) , held at Kenilworth , oa the 30 th of June , wherein he states that the Masonic charities did iiot receive that
support from the provincial Brethren t & at they deserved , and t % t two thirds , or nearly ^ of the recipients of the benefits of these institutions while nearly three fourths of tlje amount epptributed to their support was derivable ftpjn Lonxjpn . Bro . Sherry , P . M ., also read a portion of the report from the committee of management of the Benevolent Institution , in which is stated , that nearly all the expenses of th § festivals in aid ofthe institution , fell on the London
Brethren , and that nine teriths of the subscriptions announced at the last festival came from them . In order to remedy this unsatisfactory state of things , and remove a portion of the stigma now attached to the provincial Brethren , Bro , Sherry P . M ., moved the following resolution , which was seconded by Bro . Haslehain , J . W . and carried unanimously : —
" To the Committee on the Masonic Schools— -We , the undersigned , being the Master , Wardens , and members present , in open Lodge assembled , of Lodge No . 90 , held at . the Black Swan , Winchester , this 25 th of August , 1858 , having taken into consideration the report of tjie Committee on the Masonic Schools , are of opinion , that the provincial Lodges have not contributed a fair portion to the Masonic Benevolent Fund . We therefore suggest that article No-2 , page 90 , of the Book of Constitutions * . should be altered ; and in order to place the provincial Brethren on an equal footing with the London Brethren , we propose that the
annua ) payments of the former should be doubled , which will thereby & naM $ the Board of Benevolence to apply a considerably larger amount to each of the Masonic charities . At the same time wc desire to call your attention to the position of the aged and decayed Masons anc } widows who liaye been unsuccessful in their application for relief , many of whom have for a number of years contributed largely to the support of all the charities ; we therefore suggest that a committee should be appointed to inquire into the present position of the Aged and Decayed Masons' and Widows * Pund , with a view of placing ultimately on the funds of benevolence ^ all npplipants for our chqrity .
