The Grand Master , in the midst of that exquisite torture , manifested even to the last moment the same firmness that he had done in the court of the cathedral , and expz-essed himself neazly izr the same manner .
He repeated his protestations of the innocence of his chevaliers ; but as to himself , he said , that he desezwed to suffez * , for having allowed the contrary in the presence of the Pope and the King . At his last moment , whezz no other liberty Avas left him but that of speech , and was almost stifled with the smoke , he cried aloud , " Oh Clement , thou unjust judge and barbarous executioner , I summon thee to appear within forty days before the judgment seat of God .
