ROYAL ARCH .
Bro . IHE LORD MAYOR replying , expressed his thanks to the lodge for the kind , cordial and sympathetic reception he had received . Surrounded , as he felt himself to be by friends , many of long standing , friends who had made him what he was , real friends whom he wished most gratefully to thank , he trusted that lit ; should shortly have more leisure time , when he should be able to
be more frequently among them . Bro . Philbrick had truly said that Masonry was not a local institution—it was universal—it embodied the great principles which some day or another would prevail all over the world—true brotherly feeling—an appreciation of what was good everywhere . Ho comprehended that unity which helped to harmonize and make the world what it ought to be , and
what as Masons , they wished it to be . In addressing , he believed . 20 . 000 people at Stockport , he informed them that he , and those taking part in the ceremony as lawful Masons , had their secrets , but that those secrets were not in any way opposed to the laws of God or man . Therein lay the true spirit of Freemasonry . And the reason why he , when he was called upon some time ago to
give up his Masonic Association , which for so many years he had cherished so dearly , refused to do it . was , as he said . " As a Mason , I practice nothing which is incompatible with the laws of God or man , and I shall remain a Mason . " He refused altogether to have anything to do with such an act of intolerance , recognising , as he did , to the fullest extent , the tolerant and generous spirit exhibited by the citizens of London in electing
him the chief magistrate . It was his intention to remain a Mason , and to devote more of his time to the Craft , particularly the three great institutions of which they were all so proud . He again thanked the members of the St . Dunstan ' s Lodge for their cordial reception . Bros . Sheriffs Major Davies and Higgs , having responded in suitable terms , after the usual toasts , the brethren separated , having passed a most enjoyable evening .
