the Benevolent , and to the remaining 6 there is no record . Of course there may be some whose names are absorbed up in the provincial lists , and are therefore unrecorded individually , yet I am of opinion that when , out of a list of 33 , only 12 are recorded as doing anything , and out of that 12 only 3 have made themselves Life Governors of the Institutions into which their children have been
received , some means should be devised of stimulating them , in future , to further exertions ; but if it is the opinion of the brethren that my scheme , which would have added 210 guineas to one and 60 to the other , is too easy , let the standard be raised to vicepresidents within the seven years . Now , as to Brother Binckcs ' objection—namely , making a benefit society of our order—I beg to
differ with my friend . Because those members of our order are admitted on the solemn assurance that they do not seek it for any mercenary or other unworthy motive , but that we should have institutions for the aid and assistance of those members who have had the misfortune of being reduced to poverty more or less severe , is merely the outcome of that pole of Freemasonry charity ; in
those other grand orders , Odd Fellows , Foresters and others , the members _ join with the distinct understanding that they shall receive aid and assistance in cases of accident , sickness or death , and that , I trow , is the great and essential difference ( in principle , if not in practice ) between us and them . Yours fraternally ,

P . S . —A subscribing member does not necessarily constitute any benefit to the institutions , for there are several who never give anything .
To the Editor of THE MASONIC STAR . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , What is the Choughs lodge , No . 2264 , lately consecrated at Cannon Street Hotel 1 Is it comprised of Cornishmen , that they take the name of Choughs ? Fraternally yours , Redhill , 27 th Oct ., 1888 . J . M .
% * Will some brother interested in the above enquiry kindly answer it throuqh our columns ?
To the . Editor of THE MASONIC STAR . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , I have derived a great deal of instruction from a perusal of a little book , " Lodge Officers , " which bears your name as author . It appears to me to be a very useful work for all those desiring to
know the nature of official duties appertaining to the various lodge officers . The cheap form in which it is issued should ensure for it a large sale . May I ask you , however , in connection with the portion headed " Worshipful Masters , " to explain your meaning when you say :
" The gavel with which he has been entrusted for purposes of order merely completes in their estimation the necessary complement of ordinary chairmanship ; for they hare forgotten , if indeed they hare ever heard , the solitary reference to his (/ randprototype , which in the course of ceremonial is , or should he , enunciated ? "
Thanks in advance , Fraternally yours . ADOLPHE L . SAWER , NO . 1457 . P . S . —I would address you personally on the subject , but have been asked by several friends to elicit an answer through the columns of your journal . [ % * We will , reply to this letter newt wceh . —Eo . M . S . l
To the Editor ofTmz MASONIC STAR . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , You state in your impression of the 1 st inst . : — " The Special Committee appointed to enquire into the discipline and administration of the R . M . I . B . will meet , " & c . ( see page 142 ) . ' All subscribers to the institution will be admitted and reporters may be present . '
Acting on this information , I arrived to-day at Freemasons' Hall , only to learn that the enquiry was a private one , none but witnesses being admitted . I should like to know why subscribers to the institution are not allowed to be present and how you yourself are going to furnish your readers with details of the enquiry so anxiously awaited by a large body of Masons , some living many
miles from London / If an enquiry with closed doors satisfies London Masons , will it satisfy the provinces , notably Yorkshire ' / My poor brain is also exercised as to why Bro . Godson , M . P ., a member of the House Committee , was present the other day and endeavoured to cross-examine one of the late Masters , who , very properly , declined to answer him . The Secretary of the Institution
appears to have made the enquiry room his abiding place—that perhaps is natural , as he is very much on his defence—but is there none present on behalf of the outside subscribers ! " Light , more light ! " were the words of the dying philosopher , and they may rightly be echoed by more humble mortals . Yours fraternally , Nov . 6 th , 1888 . . 53 ( AN OLD PUPIL OF THE SCHOOL ) .
