OUR TRESTLE BOARD
" For the Master to lay lines and draw designs upon . "
MASTER MASON writes us a letter in reference to tho Royal Masonic Institution for Boys and the late Committee of Investigation , with the suggestions made in which wo quite agree , and believe that the majority of our readers will acquiesce . But we have already said , and now repeat , that in our opinion " it will be the duty of all true friends of the institution to avoid any
interference whatsoever with the deliberations or directions" of the Provisional Committee , which has been appointed to the temporary management of the affairs of the school , and to report to the General Court as to the best and most effectual meann for carrying out the resolution for the " entire change in the administration . " AVe had decided not to publish MASTER MASON ' letter whilst circumstances are favorable to an issue which will be satisfactory to the
subscribers as being in tho best interests of the institution . The '' tendency to attempt to obtain peace by gentle means , " which our correspondent thinks '' must surely fail , " will , we trust , be strengthened during the next few weeks , and whilst the anxiety to make the ensuing festival a success , particularly in a pecuniary point of view , is upon those who wish well for the children under ° Uf care .
Our Trestle Board
But since our intention to wit-hold MASTER MASON ' letter was formed , other letters have been received having reference to the same subject , and these contain . suggestions which it might be advisable should have an " all round" consideration . It would be unfair in us to suppress these latter , and their insertion without the companionship of MASTER MASON ' letter would be still more unfair .
AVe therefore give place to all ; may difference of opinion never sever Masonic friendship ! AAliat we ourselves think , should be immaterial to every right-minded brother interested in the question and capable of forming a reasonable judgment . Some will doubtless wield the sword in this matter , and others will interpose
the shield . Justice may be done and yet Mercy not bo frighted . Our part is to act squarely and independently of all external influences , and present to our readers the opinions of others as they are expressed through the medium of our columns . This we have hitherto done , and shall continue to do whilst controversy is conducted prudently and with temperance .
* * * # * AVc are glad to know in connection with the foregoing that the members of the late House Committee who had not resigned at the date of the Special Court ( Gth inst . ) , have now resolved to hand over all authority they might have been supposed to possess ( which ,
to our mind , after the last meeting of the General Court , became as ;/ - is in Algebra , an unknown quantity ) , to the Provisional Committee . This certainly evidences a further " tendency to attempt to obtain peace , " and we congratulate our brethren on tho good sense and masonic spirit with which they have so far met tho difficulties of their position .
* * * * # It now only remains for the General Court at its next meeting in July to again adjourn the business of Election of House Committee , and to do so from time to time , if necessary , until after the advice of the Provisional Committee shall have been given to a future Special Court .
The following circular has been issued to the several brethren who have kindly undertaken Stewardships for the Festival on the 3 rd prox .: — " The Provisional Management Committee appointed at the Special Court on the Gth inst ., in fulfilment of the duties intrusted to them , most earnestly intrcat the Stewards to spare no exertion in obtaining a liberal response to their appeal for aid . The circumstances under which the Institution is placed imperatively demand
a most generous response from all its friends . The Committee has arranged with the Treasurer of the Institution , that all contributions which may be remitted to him shall be paid into a Separate Account , and applied by this Committee in the interest of the Institution . AVe are . dear sir and brother , yours faithfully and fraternally , Euston , Prov . G . M . Norths . & Hunts . Chairman ; Fred . A . Philbrick , Q . C ., G . Reg .. Vice-Chairman . "
The House and Audit Committees of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls seem to be alive to the exigencies of the situation in which their confreres of the companion School are placed . On AVednesday , the 12 th inst ., a joint conference was held , with a view to see what changes may be effected that will advantage the
Institution . The axiom that " those who want a thing well done should do it themselves" may have considerable application in this instance . It would certainly have a tendency towards "peace among the subscribers " if reforms can be effected and announced without the intervention of any " Special Court . "
AVe must go abroad for home news ! Tho South African Freemason says— " At a recent meeting of the Unity Lodge , 183 , London , the secretary reported that although the Lodge had been at work uninterruptedly for 120 years , it had never had a Grand Lodge collar bestowed upon any of its members . "
KEXXINGTON LODGE OF INSTRUCTION—No . 1381 . —The usual weekly meeting was held on Friday , 14 th inst ., at the Horns , Kennington . Present : Bros . AV . AV . Westley , preceptor and treasurer ; II . N . Price , P . M . 177 . AV . M . 2308 , AV . M . ; E . A . G . Smith , S . AV . 2308 , S . AV . : Buxton . J . AV . 2308 , J . AV . ; Cochrane , P . M ., S . D . ;
C . AVoods , 1809 , J . D . ; J . Higgs , I . G . 2308 , I . G . ; and other brethren to the number of 17 . The ceremony of initiation was rehearsed , Bro . Spencer , candidate . The second and third sections of the lecture were worked by Bro . AVestley , assisted by the brethren . Bros . J . Higgs and C . AVoods were elected members . Bro . Ernest Smith was elected A \ . M . for the next meeting .
A theatrical performance on behalf of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys was given at the Theatre Royal , Cardiff , on Friday last . Bro . E . Fletcher , the lessee and manager of this popular place of entertainment , arranged with Bro . Munday to carry out the working of the compliment . Great praise is due to Bro . Munday for the pains he took in making the performance so great
a success . After the drama , of The Lueltg Star , in which Miss Emma Rainbow tdionc to great advantage , the Llandaff Orpheus Union sang a couple of glees with much effect . Madame Lucy Clarke . R . A . M ., gave " The Children ' s Home , " illustrated by tableaux . Bro . Edward Fletcher recited " The Charge of the Light Brigade , " accomjwnicd with martial music admirably composed by Mr . Charles Langley . Bro . Richard Elliott sang two humorous songs and was much applauded , the curtain falling on Bro . J . II .
Stephens' most amusing ventriloquial performance . A large number of brethren from the Cardiff and other Lodges in the district attended , and the evening ' s entertainment was successfully carried through to the satisfaction of the audience , and , we believe , to the benefit of our Boys' School . Bro . Fletcher ' s liberal assistance is highly appreciated by the members of the Craft in his locality .
