'TWAS in Damascus on an April day ; In the bazaars Avhere pilgrims congregate I met an aged Mason ; on his head The turban of Mohammed , large and green ; In his right hand the mystic almond rod , Such as wise Jacob bore , and Moses bore When the Red Sea Avas cleft beneath his hand .
Mustapha Avas his name ; tall , gaunt and gray , Yet his black eye , undimmed , flashed into mine ; And his strong hand exchanged the mystic grip With sinewy force . He Avas my senior by some forty years ,
And sixty years a Mason . He had thought More deeply than the most , of the intent Of Solomon's Aviso imagery so quaint and old , And hoAV it makes its impress on the soul .
I asked him Avhich of all these emblems AVISO That glorify our Trestle Board , is best ? Which gives divinest light' which points to us Most surely the Great Master of the Craft ?
In quick reply , he laid that sineAvy hand Upon the SQUARE . It is my favourite type , One that in a thousand Lodges I have loA ed To moralize upon , the Trying Square . He took it up , and Avith great reverence
Raised it toward the Throne . " By this , " he said , " The Heaven of HeaA'ens in perfect order fell , When God took out the Master ' s implements From His OAAUI chest , and built the uniA erse !
By THIS the radiant Throne—by THIS the Courts Of His OAVU glory Avere constructed sure ! Earth and the stars Avere fashioned Avell by THESE . The Gavel , Trowel , Level , Line and Rule ; The Lodge Celestial by the SQUARE alone ! "
This was the legend that the Arab told . I partly do believe it , for I see In this full angle and these perfect lines AVhat in no other A \ orking tool appears . And noting that you choose this honoured type
To give 3 our Lodge a name , I charge you now , Dear brethren , KEEP AVITHIX IT ! Do your work , Your praise , your counsels to the listening Craft , And oh , your daily Avalk before the Avorld , WITHIN THE SQUARE . [ From The , Poetry of Freemasonry , by the late Bro . Dr . ALL communications should be forwarded to 59 , Moor Lane , Fore Street . E . G ., London . Those relating to Editorial matter to be addressed to the EDITOR ; and all others to Messrs . Our attention has been called to a printer s error in our last Aveek's editorial , in the substitution of but one letter for another ; an apparently trifling matter , yet absolutely destroying the sense of a sentence . Referring to " toleration in matters ethical , being
one of the landmarks of our order , " we are made to ask " but is toleration extended wynvards ? By one religious body , no ! " To this no meaning can be attached . But reading as AVO Avrote , "Is toleration extended w . v-Avards '" the context is plain , and the argument incontestable .
" Benedictine " ( see - Correspondence ) , asks if there is any objection to ladies Avearing ornaments in which masonic emblems are displayed . We know of no masonic sumptuary edict Avhich would be disregarded by the practice ; and as to objections doubt their utility if made . We ourselves , " permit" the fair partner of

any of the functions beyond ceremonial work witlim the lodge , or enjoy any of the privileges attached to the office . Avhilst merely acting as locum tenens for the regularly appointed and invested officer , Avho , by his resignation , practically leaves the lodge Avithout a Junior Warden until the next annual period of installation of W . The Jewish Chronicle of the ICth inst . announces the death of Bro . Levi A . Cohen at the St . Thomas ' s Home , the department for paying-patients in the hospital of that name . Our deceased brother Avas a Avell-knoAAm man at Tangiers , and to the Jews in Morocco his death will be a severe and long-felt loss . In association with our order he largely promoted , about three years ago , the
establishment of the first Masonic Lodge ever opened in Morocco , and held one of the highest offices in that lodge , which has its headquarters at Tangiers . The event Avas considered of sufficient interest to be commemorated by portrait sketches in one of the London illustrated papers of the principal officers of the lodge ,
Bro . Cohen among them . He Avas a remarkable man in a land where civilization has barely obtained a footing ; and the recollection of his short but usefully spent life , which terminated at the early age of 44 , Avill not easily be effaced from those who in this country and in Morocco knew him and appreciated his sterling worth .

Major John Senhouse Goldie-Taubman , J . P . and speaker of the House of Keys is the Prov , Grand Master ; and which A \ ill be held at the Masonic Hall . Douglas , this dav . 29 th
inst . The motion will be made by W . Bro . R . Swinnerton , P . G . D . C . as a recommendation from the Spencer Walpole Temperance Lodge , No . 2197 , and is to the following effect : — "That , Avith a vieAv to securing uniformity of working , the ProA'incial Grand Lodge be requested to take such steps as may be necessary to promote the
holding of combined Lodges of Instruction . " This is a step in the right direction . If the motion is carried , AVO shall Avatch results Avith much interest , and shall hope to see its adoption in other Provinces prior to a movement to secure something of the sort for the metropolis .
