To the Editor of THE MASONIC STAR . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , Will you allow me to inform the editors of other calendars , and those Avho have communicated Avith me . on the subject , that the calendar Avill not appear again under my editorship , as , for various
reasons , I intend devoting my attention to metropolitan masonry . To the . Editor ^/" T M ASONIC S . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , With reference to Junior Warden , Bro . Beavis' and other letters , I think it is quite right that the Secretaries of these Bene \ -olent Associations should have some recognition for their valuable and gratuitous services ; but I don't see that the head-quarters should be
expected to recognise it themselves . What I should humbly like to suggest is this , that Avhen brothers and subscribers are unable to continue their Aveekly subscriptions , the amount they may have paid towards the funds should form a surplus , Avhich . Avhen sufficiently large , should be appropriated to the purchase of a Life
Governorship in any of the Masonic Charities and given to the Secretary , instead of refunding it to the brothers or others Avho , from some unforeseen circumstances , are unable to continue their aid and support . Yours fraternally , London . Nov . 27 th , 1888 . WM . H . LIDDALL . S . D . 45 .

FOURTH ANNUAL NORTH LONDON MASONIC BALL .
In our advertising columns Avill be found particulars of the Fourth Annual North London Masonic Ball , to be held at the Freemasons ' Tavern , Great Queen Street , W . C , on Wednesday , January the 2 nd , 1889 . This ball is under the patronage of Sir A . K . Rollit , M . P . and Mr . Cowley Lambert , M . P . The president is Bro . Charles Townley , so Avell known in musical and dramatic circles , and the
vice-presidents are Mr . James Terry , P . G . S . B ., Sec , R . M . B . I . ; Bro . F . Binckes . P . G . S . B ., Sec , R . M . I . G . ; Bro . F . R . W . Hedges , P . G . S . B ., Sec , R . M . I . G ., and Bro . Edward Terry , P . G . S . and P . M . 29 , 1305 . The commendable feature of the ball is that the profits arising therefrom are to be given to the masonic charities , and it therefore deserves the hearty consideration and support of all
members of the craft , especially those residing in the northern part of our metropolis . The committee is a thoroughly representative one , not only of the craft but of residents of North London , and their names should be a sufficient guarantee to make the ball a greater success even than those Avhich have preceded it . The tickets
have been fixed at such a price as to make the company select , and those of our brethren Avho determine to be present will , Ave are sure , spend an enjoyable evening , and feel a heartfelt satisfaction in having once more been able to someAvhat add to the funds of our several splendid institutions .
MASONIC LECTURE , —On Tuesday , the 20 th inst ., at the Merchants' Lodge of Instruction , Liverpool , an interesting lecture on ' Ancient Masonic Emblems " was delivered by Bro . Captain J . Macnab , W . M . 241 . Bro . C . C Robin , 78 G , occupied the chair , being supported by Bro . J . Brotherton , the preceptor , and there Avas a large attendance . Bro . Macnab announced that he had chosen for
this lecture the purely ancient emblems only , reserving those of later date for a future occasion , and the novel and interesting manner in Avhich he explained their origin , and accounted for their presence in modern masonry after the lapse of thousands of years , called forth the hearty encomiums of the audience . It is intended
by the members of this useful lodge to have these historical lectures at frequent intervals in future , and on next Tuesday evening another member , Bro . West , is to folloAV on a kindred subject . We strongly sympathise Avith these endeavours to instruct by means of lectures other than sectional in our Lodges of Instruction , and Avish they were more general .
