all of Hermes Chapter , No . 77 , and Dr . Karnsay . Tho Chapter having been opened in due form , and the minutes of previous Convocation read and confirmed , ballots wero taken for tho W . The usual toasts woro given , interspersed with some excel , lent singing , and a very enjoyable evening was spent . Tlie M . E . Z .

Z ., tho oldest member of tho Chapter ; he was one of tho signatories of tho application for tho Charter in 1811 . Tho M . E . Z . stated that he had attended his last obsequies , in Suffolk , and proposed a toast to his pious memory , which was drunk in silence .

Prosperity Loclge , No . 65 . —An " off" night ! Commend us to " olf" nights , whenever they can bo made so practically useful and so thoroughly enjoyable as was tho mooting of this Lodgo on tho evening of tho 23 rd ult . at tho Guildhall Tavern , Greshamstreet , E . C . Paradoxical as it may appear , tho want of work gavo opportunity fur belter work than would probably havo baou found

had the agenda boon carried out as originally intended . Tho unexpected inability of two accepted candidates to attend for initiation afforded a leisure of which the fullest advantage was taken , and the result was highly gratifying , both as regards the interests of the Lodge itsolf , and thoso of Freemasonry in general . The Lodgo was opeued at tho appointed hour by Bro . C . Daniel W . M ., with all

his Officers at thoir respective stations , there being present Bros . C . E . Terry S . W ., W . Chicken J . W ., J . Roberta S . D ., Sohadler J . D . E . VV . Braine I . G ., J . G . Goodwin P . Stevens P . M ., The Great City ; A . Martin P . M ., Joppa ; J . Gardner , City of Westminster ; VV . A . Hunt , Crichton ; and R . F . Gray , St . Barnabas . The minutes of tho previous meeting having been confirmed , the ballot was taken for two candidates who wero fully expected to be present for initiation , aud whilst waiting their attendance the Lodgo was passed aud raised , aud closed

to tbe first degree , when the announcement was mado that tho expected candidates wore at tho last moment prevented from attending . Au unusual incident thou occurred . The Lodge had on a previous occasion very materially assisted a worthy member whoso circumstances had changed through unforeseen calamity ; aud by the intervention of the W . M . and his Ollicers , his

caso had been brought before tho Board of Benevolence with a highly satisfactory result . To his honour , bo it said , he saw fit to attend and to acknowledge , in open Lodge , his deep senso of thankfulness for the assistance afforded , and his manner of doing this lot ' s it very doubtful in the minds of tho brethren as to which party had most cause to be gratified with this practical

exemplification of tho true principles of the Order . Tho worthy brother , by his simple acknowledgments , himself unwittingly did good service to tho cause of Charity , and tho hearts thus stirred by his grateful thanks were at once expanded by a desire for further benevolence . Tho W . M ., Bro . Daniel , stated his willingness to act as Steward for the Benevolent Institution at its ensuing Festival , with

a personal donation ; tho Lodgo itself voted ton guineas , and a wellknown brother supplemented that vote by a further sum of equal amount . Thus was sot afoot the nucleus of a Stewards' list which will materially help the funds of tho Institution aud bo worthy of the Lodgo which bears the title of " Prosperity . " Long , indeed ,

may prosperity attend it , and enable it to continue such laudable ) Masonic work . Tho W . M ., addressing tho Visitors , apologised ( quite needlessly as they remarked ) , for whatever disappointment they experienced from absence of work and non-provision for subsequent entertainment , but requested them to remain for a " grog and cigar , " aud social chat on matters Masonic . Ho then closed the Lodgo aud
