the time when they nere indebted to the Carlisle brethren for their existence as a Lodge , and contrasted that state of things with the present time , when they had a large body of working members , and their nnmber waa constantly increasing . Some excellent songs were admirably rendered during the evening , by Bros . Gooding , Sissons ,

Nelson , Scales , John Bintley , and others , and the brethren separated before 10 o ' clock . One pleasing , though melancholy feature of the day ' s proceedings , was the unveiling of a memorial portrait of the late Bro . Henry Rauthmel , who had beeu unexpected called to the Grand Lodge above , in the prime of life . Bro . Hogg was tho artist , and his effort was one of unqualified success .

Kendal Castle Chapter , No . 129 . —The annual convocation of this Chapter was held on Thursday , 25 th January , at 1 o ' clock in tho afternoon , afc tho Masonio Hall , Stramondgato . The Chapter was opened by tho Principals , after which tho Companions were admitted , and tho minutes read and confirmed . E . Companion John Bowes P . Z . & o ., waa then invited to instal the Principals elect—viz .,

Comps . John Holmes Z ., Joseph Bintley H ., and John Talbot J . The ceremony having been completed , the officers for the ensuing year wero invested—viz ., Comps . McKay E ., Bell N ., and Godfrey P . S . A cordial vote of thanks was accorded to Comp . Bowes , for his able services for years past , and particularly for thoso of the day .

The Treasurer , Comp . Titus Wilson , reported that the finances of the Chapter wero in a very satisfactory condition , whereupon Comp . McKay announced that he had undertaken the duty of Steward at the forthcoming Festival of the Benevolent Institution , and asked for £ 5 to be added to his list . This was readily granted . After the transaction of some routine business , the Chapter was closed , with the usual solemnities .

Joppa- Chapter , No . 188 . —A Convocation of this Chapter was held on Monday , 29 th Jan ., at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgate-street , City . Comps . E . P . Albert P . Z ., in the absence of the M . E . Z ., as Z ., W . Littaur P . Z . H ., L . Jacobs J ., P . Dickinson S . E ., L . Lazarus P . S ., M . Myera 1 st Assfc ., Davis 2 nd Assfc ., P . Z . 's S . Pollitzer , S . Lazarus and J . Lazarus ; also Comps . L . Auerhaan , Bookbinder , Davis ,

Mellish , Grove Ellis , A . Auerhaan , P . Moore , J . S . Lyon , ¥ . Banm , M . Silver , Haines , Myers , & o . The Chapter was opened , and the minutes were confirmed . A ballot was taken for Bro . E . G . Howell , No . 12 , which was unanimously in his favour , he , with Bro . Snelling , who had been elected on a former occasion , being in attendance , both were duly exalted into E . A . Masonry . The working iu every respect

was excellently rendered . Two brethren were proposed for exaltation at the next meeting , and the Chapter was closed until the last Monday in March . A sumptuous banquet , provided by Comp . Jennings , and superintended by Comp . M . Silver , was then partaken of , and at which all present expressed unqualified satisfaction . On the removal of the cloth , the Acting M . E . Z . proposed the usual Loyal and E . A . toasts .

He then gave that of the newly exalted Companions . From the attention they had paid to tho ceremony , and the recommendations they brought , they merited respect from all . Comp . Snelling responded to the toast . The acting M . E . Z . then proposed the toast of the Visitors ; although but few in number , they were distinguished in the Order . They were welcome , not only on this occasion , but also at any time

they might honour the Chapter with a visit . Comps . Howo Z . elect 217 , G . Bubb 180 , and C . Hogard M . E . Z . 141 , severally responded ; they appreciated the excellent working , and tho kind hospitality accorded them . Comp . J . Lazarus P . Z . then proposed the health of the acting Z ., Comp . E . P . Albert . The Companions had seen how , afc so short a notice , he had occupied the chair , and discharged

the duties , to their satisfaction ( cheers ); also how admirably and genially he had presided . All hoped he would have health aud long life to be among them . Companion Albert thanked them for tho kind appreciation of his services ; it was ten years since he had occupied the chair of Z . in that Chapter . Ho had to thank his two supporters for their kind assistance , and ho was

pleased to hear that his efforts had met with their approbation . He then proposed the toast of the P . Z . ' s , who had discharged their duties to the satisfaction of all ; he would call on an old and valued friend , Comp . S . N . Abrahams , P . Z . and Treasurer , to respond to the toast . Comp . Abrahams , in returning thanks , fully justified the pertinent remarks of the acting Z . The healths of tho H . and

J . was responded to by Comps . W . Littaur and A . L . Jacobs . Tho M . E . Z ., in proposing the toast of the Junior Officers , complimented Comp . Dickinson S . E ., who had occupied that position for two years with credit to himself and satisfaction to the Chapter . Time and distance was no object to him , so long as the interests of the

Chapter were at stake . The same remarks would apply to Comp . L . Lazarus P . S ., whose excellent working was such that he was sure he would fill with credit any office entrusted to him in the Chapter ; ho was a pattern worthy of imitation . The Janitor ' s toast was then given , and the Companions separated . Comps . Dickinson aud N . Banm contributed to the harmony .

Confidence Lodge of Instruction , No . 193 . —Afc the weekly meeting , which was held on Wednesday , the 31 st inst ., at Masons' Hall Tavern , Masons ' -avenue , Coleman-street , B . C ., Bro . Bono presided , assisted by Bros . Abell S . W ., Tumor J . W ., E . Gottheil P . M . Preceptor , John Constable P . M . Hon . Treasurer , Eudderforth as Secretary , Triggs S . D ., Sayer J . D ., Lay I . G ., Christopher Tyler . The bnsiness of the evening consisted of the rehearsal of the third

ceremony , Bro . Defriez acting as candidate , after which the second and third sections of the lecture were worked by the Preceptor , assisted by the Brethren . In moving a vote of thanks to the W . M ., Bro . Gottheil took the opportunity to observe that it was customary , he believed , in every Lodge of Instruction to pursue a similar course . It was a beneficial custom , as it tended to gratify the recipient , and stimulated others iu their endeavours to excel . In all cases tho

In this instance , however , the vote is pre-eminently well deserved , seeing that nofc only is ifc the first time Bro . Bone has occupied any chair previous to his following tho

various offices leading to it , but in his maiden effort ho undertook tho onerous duty of working tho ceremony of tho third degree . The brethren had witnessed the manner in which he had succeeded , and would agree to the proposition , that a vote of thanks to the W . M . bo recorded on the Lodge Book for the excellent manner in which ho had conducted the business of the evening . This was seconded by

Bro . Defriez , who expressed a desire to do so from the fact of his having acted as candidate . He wished to testify to tho pleasure with which he had listened to the W . M ., and tho gratification it had afforded him to witness his excellent working . Bro . J . Constable , in supporting the motion , urged the brethren to emulate tho example of the W . M ., which would , he assured them , nofc only givo satisfaction

to themselves but bring credit to the Lodge . The voto was unanimously carried . Bro . Bone cordially thanked the brethren for their kindness . He was pleased to have given even a small measure of satisfaction , but hoped that when next permitted to occupy the position he would bo ablo to do the work with greater efficiency . The

election of officers was next proceeded with , when Bro . Abell , the S . W ., was unanimously elected . According to the bye-laws , the ceremony of the first degree will be rehearsed on the next occasion , when it is hoped a largo number of members and brethren will rally round our respected and aspiring brother .

Lodgo was opened , and tho minutes of previous meeting confirmed . The ceremonies of initiation and passing were rehearsed , Bros . Hewlett and Stock acting as candidates . Several sections wero worked . Bros . Hewlett 141 , E . Clark 1613 , E . Abbott 917 , Taylor 811 , and G . Schuldonfrei 188 wero elected members . Bro . Eead waa appointed W . M . for the next meeting .

Zetland Chapter , No . 236 . —The regular meeting of this Chapter was held at York , on Wednesday , 31 st January , when , after the exaltation of Bros . Geo . Seller , J . T . Seller and W . H . Gainforth to the supreme degree , the annual election of officers was held , with the following result : —Comps . Thos . Smurthwaite Z ., H . V . Palmer H .,

There was a good attendance of members , and the proceedings were followed by an excellent ; supper , at which the M . E . Comp . J . Todd P . Z . presided .

Commercial Lodge , No . 360 . —This Lodge hold its regular meeting on Friday , 19 th January , in its own hall , 30 Hope-street , Glasgow , Bro . J . Munro E . W . M . iu the chair , Bros . J . M . Oliver D . M ., Wm . Findley S . W ., G . W . Wheeler J . W ., J . Smith Sec , G . Scott Tr ., A . Patterson S . D ., E . Brodio presiding at the harmonium , Harrison

acting I . G ., and Jas . Minnock Tyler . The Lodge was then raised to the 2 nd degree , when Bro . J . M . Oliver , in a most able and efficient manner , passed Bros . Wm . Melville and W . G . Craven to the Fellow Craft degree . The Lodge is fortunate in having so many of its office bearers able and willing to work all the degrees .

Mtzroy Lodge , No . 569 . —The installation meeting of this Lodge was held at the Artillery Grounds , Finsbury , the Head Quarters of the Eegiment , on Friday , 26 th January . Bro . Frederic Graves W . M . presided , and all tho officers were present . After tho confirmation of the minutes of the previous meeting , and of a Lodgo of Emergency , a ballot was taken for the admission of Bro . Lieut . A .

Dnrrant , P . M . of Lodge No . 1185 , which proved unanimous in his favour . Bro . Capt . Eglese then took the chair , and installed Bro . Ensign W . I . Spicer as W . M . for the ensuing year . The ceremony was performed in a very able and impressive manner , and the addresses were listened to with earnest attention . The W . M . then proceeded to appoint and invest his officers as follow : —Bros . E . G .

Webster S . W ., A . Evenngham J . W ., J . Sanderson S . D ., F . J . Stohwassor J . D ., Quarter-Master W . G . Brighton I . G ., Capt . J . Egleso Hon . Sec , and W . Jolliffe D . C .: Bro . Capt . Helsham was invested as Treasurer . The W . M . then stated that ho had a very agreeable duty to perform , which was to present to the I . P . M ., Bro . Graves , a jewel , unanimously voted to him by the Lodgo , in recognition of the able

and satisfactory manner in which ho had fulfilled the arduous duties of his year of office ; he had had more work to do than any preceding Master in that chair . Bro . Graves briefly thanked the brethren for their kindness ; he shonld always regard the gift with feelings of pleasure , and as a memento of his happy year of office . The sum of £ 10 was then voted for the Eoyal Masonic Benevolent Institution ,

to be placed on the list of Bro . P . M . Adams . The Lodgo having been closed , tho brethren adjonrned to their magnificent hall , which was tastefully decorated for tho occasion , whero an excellent banquet was served by their Sutler . After the usual Loyal and Craft toasts had beeu proposed and responded to , Bro . Capt . Helsham ( in tho unavoidable absence of the I . P . M . ) proposed tho health of tho W . M .

in a very eloquent speech . He felt sure that the brethren had elected one who , from his well known amiable qualities , wonld reflect credit on their choice , and , in conclusion , wished him a happy year of office , with plenty of work . The W . M . said he was quite taken aback by the flattering manner in which his health had been proposed ; he felt that he did nofc merit all the kind things that had been said about

After tho confirmation of the minutes of the previous meeting , and of a Lodgo of Emergency , a ballot was taken for the admission of Bro . Lieut . A .

Dnrrant , P . M . of Lodge No . 1185 , which proved unanimous in his favour . Bro . Capt . Eglese then took the chair , and installed Bro . Ensign W . I . Spicer as W . M . for the ensuing year . The ceremony was performed in a very able and impressive manner , and the addresses were listened to with earnest attention . The W . M . then proceeded to appoint and invest his officers as follow : —Bros . E . G .

Capt . Helsham was invested as Treasurer . The W . M . then stated that ho had a very agreeable duty to perform , which was to present to the I . P . M ., Bro . Graves , a jewel , unanimously voted to him by the Lodgo , in recognition of the able

and satisfactory manner in which ho had fulfilled the arduous duties of his year of office ; he had had more work to do than any preceding Master in that chair . Bro . Graves briefly thanked the brethren for their kindness ; he shonld always regard the gift with feelings of pleasure , and as a memento of his happy year of office . The sum of £ 10 was then voted for the Eoyal Masonic Benevolent Institution ,

to be placed on the list of Bro . P . M . Adams . The Lodgo having been closed , tho brethren adjonrned to their magnificent hall , which was tastefully decorated for tho occasion , whero an excellent banquet was served by their Sutler . After the usual Loyal and Craft toasts had beeu proposed and responded to , Bro . Capt . Helsham ( in tho unavoidable absence of the I . P . M . ) proposed tho health of tho W . M .

in a very eloquent speech . He felt sure that the brethren had elected one who , from his well known amiable qualities , wonld reflect credit on their choice , and , in conclusion , wished him a happy year of office , with plenty of work . The W . M . said he was quite taken aback by the flattering manner in which his health had been proposed ; he felt that he did nofc merit all the kind things that had been said about
