WE glean from the North China Herald particulars of an interesting meeting of the brethren of the Doric Lodgo No . 1433 , E . G ., which took placo at Chinkiang on tho 14 fch Jannary last . In the absence of W . M . Bro . Gearing , P . M . Bro . Menzies assumed the chair , and Lodgo was opened in accordance with ancient formalities . R . W . D . G . Master Bro . Cornelius Thome being duly announced ,
entered the Lodge , and was received with grand honours . P . M . Bro . Menzies , in welcoming the D . G . M ., asked that lie would bo pleased to take the chair of the Lodge , to which , after tho customary business of the Lodge had been transacted , ho assented . The R . W . D . G . Master said he was certain from tho very kind manner in which the brethren had expressed themselves towards W . Bro . Menzies thafc ho
had gained their esteem , and he felt sure it would afford them satisfaction to see the W . M . elect installed into tho chair by ono who had done so much to raise the position of tho " Doric Lodge . " Ho therefore had great pleasure in returning the gavel to W . Bro . Menzies and requesting him to proceed with the Installation , ancl he ( the R . W . D . G . Master ) would be happy to take a part iu tho ceremony by
addressing the W . M ., Wardens and brethren after the officers had been duly invested . W . Bro . Menzies having resumed tho chair , the W . M . elect , Bro . Emery , was dnly presented by P . M . Bro . Fergusson , P . of tho B . of G . Purposes . Tho W . M . elect was then installed in accordance with the prescribed rites of the Craft . Tho W . M . having received tho enstomary salutations from tho brethren , proceeded to

W . seconded , that a mosfc hearty vote of thanks bo accorded to tho R . W . D . G . Master and
P . M . W . Bro . Fcrgnsson for their kindness in responding to tho invi . tation to come to Chinkiang to officiate at the Installation . R . W . D . G . Master replied in a few well-choson words , ancl further added thafc he would at all times be mosfc happy to clo all that lay iu his power to forward the interest of " Weo Doric , " and thanked the W . Master
and brethren for tho reception accorded to him and the President of the District Board of General Purposes Bro . Fergusson . Bro . Fergusson , rising , said thafc the R . W . B . G . M . had fully expressed what he himself would have said , he therefore thanked tho W . Master and brethren for their kindness . The Lodge was then closed in peace and harmony .
The installation of Bro . Jobnsford as W . M . of the Royal Sussex Lodgo , No . 501 ( English Constitution ) , took placo at Shanghai on tlie 2 Sth January List , in the presence of a large assembly of the brefc , ren . The Lodge was opened at 9 . 15 p . m . by W . Bro . Evans , aud shortly afterwards the R . W . D . G . M . of Northern China with his Officers was announced , and received with Masonic honours . In
acknowledging the ( Littering reception paid to him the D . G . M . said ho had always taken a great interest in everything pertaining to the Craft , feeling assured that when its principles wero faithfully disseminated much good must result therefrom , and this Lodge had materially assisted in promulgating those principles . The Eoyal Sussex Lodge , although not tho first established in Shanghai , was tho oldestjin
China . It wns removed to that port under the auspices of the R . W , Bro . Samuel Rawson , Past Prov . G . M . for China , one of its formoi Masters , who was ever foremost in promoting this welfare of his brethren when with them , and who continues in the good work now that he resides in his native country . They rarely took up an English Masouic publication without finding his name mentioned therein .

After referring in felicitous terms to several brethren who had previously filled the chair as Masters of this Lodge , he expressed the pleasure it afforded him to bo present on this occasion and to officiate as installing Master . It afforded him intense gratification , and he was sure it did the members of the Lodge to see so large a gathering of the brethren assembled , nnd as they had on this , their first meeting in the New-year , so many
present , it augured well for the future , and he sincerely hoped that a period of revival in Freemasonry was about to set in . The R . W . D . G . M ., iu reply , said : In performing tho cerem ' ony of installation , in this , as well as in other Lodges , ifc had been his earnest endeavour to impress npon tho W . BI ., his Officers , aud the brethren generally , the necessity of acting up to the professions they made from time to time , and he
was suro if they would so act the blessing of the G . A . O . T . U . would rest npon them and the good wishes whieh had been so forcibly expressed , that Masonry might flourish , and that a bright f tifcure would be in store for the Craft in Shanghai , would be fully realized . On behalf of himself and Officers he returned many thanks for thoir kind expressions towards them and hoped that the year on which they had entered might prove ona of prosperity to the Royal Sussex Lodge and
its members . The various ceremonies having concluded , the newlyinstalled Blaster invited the brethren to join him and his Officers at a banquet provided in the adjoining room , and the Lodge was thereupon closed iu due and ancient form . They knew ho would have nofc only tho sympathy and assistance of the brethren working under fche English Constitution , bnt also that of the brethren working under other Constitutions , as
thoy had many proofs that the right hand of fellowship was warmly given by those rejoicing in the tie of Brotherhood no matter from what country they might hail . He then proposed prosperity to the Sister Grand Lodges , the toast being mosfc cordially received . P . M . Bro . Birfc 30 ° , thanked the members of the Royal Scssex Lodge for the very kind aud cordial reception they had given to the toast ; he felt a double
pleasure in being present nt their installation this evening , first as a representative of the Scottish Craft working in China , and , secondly , as he was paying dutiful homage to his Mother Lodge , inasmuch as it was within the Royal Sussex Lodge , some sixteen years ago , that fche first rays of Masonic light beamed npon his vision . He congratulated tho Lodgo npon fche large attendance , and particularly npon the number of P . M . ' s and other exalted members of the Craft who were
present , testifying plainly their unabated interest in China in an old Masonic Lodge , ancl their esteem for tho newl y installed Master , Wardens , ancl Officers , whose health he now proposed . Bro . Johnsford ' s Masonio career was known to all of them . For many years past he had been a most industrious worker having held all the various offices leading up-to tho principal chair . The toasfc was received with
enthusiasm , and briefly acknowledged by tho W . M . Bro . Hart then gave the health of the " Past Masters of tho Royal Sussex Lodge . " They seemed to have haen particularly fortunate in obtaining good men to occupy tho chair of tho Lodge , ancl two of them had ocenpied most distingnished positions in Masonry in China . He was happy to say thafc thoy were still useful in promoting the welfare of the Craft afc home . The brethren were well acquainted with the very distinguished
manner m which the P . M . ' s had conducted the affairs of the Lodge while nnder their control , ancl therefore he would ask them to drink to their health and prosperity , conpling with the toast tho name of W . Bro . Evans . Tho toast was suitably acknowledged by P . M . ' s Evans and Browne , Bro . Weiller D . G . Sup . of Works of the District Grand Lodge of Japan , in a very humorons speech , responded to the toast of tho Visitors , and shortly after the Tyler ' s toast had been honoured tho company separated .

THE annual installation meeting of the "Melita" Chapter , No . 319 , E . G ., was held afc the Masonic Hall , Valetta , on the 17 th April . The Chapter was opened by the three outgoing Principals , Ex . Comps . Rotherham Z ., Read H ., and Riechelmann J ., in the presence of Ex . Comps . Kingston ( D . G . M . ) P . Z . "Melita" 319 , Capt . F . W . Beechey P . Z . 1174 , and P . P . G . S . B . Devon , and A . M . Broadley Z . 1717 . On tho Companions being admitted the following Officers took
their respective chairs , viz ., Comps . Price S . E ., King S . N ., W . Jones P . S ., C . Yeoman S . S ., C . Abrams J . S ., and Beck Janitor . The minutes of the last Chapter meeting were read ancl confirmed , and a ballot was taken for four candidates , resulting unanimously in favour of Bros . Sherlock , Pretty , Lakey , and Bunt . Ex . Comp . Beechey was elected a joining member , as was also Comp . Owen of the Chapter Felix
S . C . afc Aden . A board of installing Principals being formed , with Ex . Comp . Kingston in the chair of Z ., the newly elected Principals wero dnly installed and inducted into the three chairs , viz ., W . Read Z ., C . Riechelmann H ., and W . Watson J . The Companions being readmitted , the following Officers were appointed and invested , viz ., Comps . Grebbel S . E ., Crabtree S . N ., Jones P . S .,
Blake S . S ., and Richards J . S . Comps . Sogond and Beck were elected and invested as Treasurer and Janitor . Tho above mentioned candidates were introduced ancl exalted to the snblime degree of fche Holy Royal Arch . The lecture of the first chair was mosfc accurately given by Ex . Comp . Rotherham P . Z . The ceremony being ended , Ex . Comp . Broadley Z . 1717 gave tho Companions an account ( afc tho
request of the 1 st Principal ) of tho progress of tho " Ancient Carthage " Chapter , in which the members of the " Melita" took so much interest . He again thanked the " Melita " Chapter for the present of sceptres , which would always be a precious memento of the fraternal feeling of the members of ono Chapter towards those ol another .
