ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS .

THE monthly Council Meeting was held at Freemasons' Hall , on Friday , 27 th ult ., Bro . Richard Eve P . G . Treas . in the chair . Amongst those present were Bros . Adamson , Fairchild , Cumberland , Kempster , C . W . Hudson , John Strachan , C . Pulman , and H . Imray .

After the usual routine business it was reported that a boy had been discharged before the expiration of his term , and at the request of his parent . The Council therefore resolved to recommend the Quarterly Court of the 11 th October to declare a further vacancy , making seventeen instead of sixteen to be elected . A letter from the Head Master , thanking the Council for his recent increase of salary , was read .

The Board of Management of the E . M . I , for Boys has resolved to perpetuate the memory of its late member—Brother William Masters—by founding a Prize to be named after him . Ifc is estimated that a sum of £ 100 will be sufficient for the

purpose , and the list ( already well started by members of the Board ) is open to be added fco by any of the friends of our lamented Brother , whose zeal for the Institution merits this lasting recognition . Bro . McLeod the Secretary will be glad to receive any donations for the fund .

Devon Educational Fund.

DEVON EDUCATIONAL FUND .

A MEETING of the General Purposes Committee of the Devon Masonic Educational Fund was held on the 24 th ult ., at the Freemasons' Hall , Princess Square , Plymouth . Bro . W . Powell presided , and there were also present Bros . S . Jew , C . Watson , J . J . C . Elliott , C . Mutten , F . Mabyn , J . B . Lord Hon . Treasurer , J . B . Gover Hon . Secretary , and W . H . Dillon

Hon . Assistant Secretary . Afc a meeting held on the 17 fch it was decided to place three candidates on the list for election in October , but it was now reported that only one applicationfrom Axminster—had been received . The three unsuccessful

candidates at the election held in April are still eligible , and the votes then recorded for them will stand to their credit at the forthcoming election . There will thus be four candidates for the three vacancies . It was intended to have held the October

meeting at Exeter , bufc fche Masonic Hall in fchat city , which is undergoing alterations , will not be available on the date fixed for the meeting , and the Committee resolved that , subject to the

approval of the Exeter Brethren , the meeting should be at Plymouth . It was announced that the Plymouth Guildhall had been secured for Wednesday , 27 th November , for the annual concert in aid of the funds of the Institution . The

concert will be held under the banner of Lodge St . John , No . 70 , and Bro . G . B . Stanlake W . M . of the Lodge is elected Chairman of the Committee . Last year ' s concert resulted in a net profit of £ 100 .

The eighth report of the Fund , being for the years 1893 and 1894 is now ready , and is of a most encouraging character . The recei pts for 1894 amounted to £ 502 , being the largest sum yet donated iu one year , the previous year being credited with nearly

Devon Educational Fund.

£ 450 . As Bro . Hnghan states in the introduction : "These figures testify most eloquently to the firm hold which the Fund has on the fraternity in Devonshire , and how steadily the financial position has improved . " The total obtained from subscribers , donors , and interest

from 1879 to the end of 1894 , amounts to £ 4 , 769 2 s , but the expenses , including the printing of the reports , have only been £ 279 18 s 6 d . Some 60 children have received , or are receiving , the benefits of the Institution , a third of fche number still

participating ; but so economical and efficient have been the management , and the needful expenses so light , thafc nearly £ 1 , 500 is in hand , all of which , save about £ 100 , is deposited in the Devon and Cornwall Bank .

Ihe donations and subscriptions for the past two years from the Lodges and other Masonic bodies cover some 25 pages , and a full statement of the Treasurer ' s accounts is also appended . There are a few Lodges that do not subscribe , but when it

is remembered that the money is raised and spent m the county , and all the Officers give their services ( including the indefatigable Secretary Bro . John B . Gover ) , ifc is confidently anticipated thafc ere long all will gladly contribute their quota to this excellent and most beneficent fund . — " Western Morning News . "

In urging further support for the Provincial Charity Funds , the Worshipful Master and other speakers at the installation of a Staffordshire Lodge said the local Brethren could have more control over them than they had in respect of the three central

Institutions in London . It is unquestionable there is a growing feeling in favour of supporting home charities in the many Provinces , sometimes to the exclusion of the London ones , but more generally in addition thereto , but the tendency seems to be

drifting more and more in the former direction . Whether this will be to the ultimate advantage or otherwise of the central Institutions time alone can prove . There are many among the leading supporters of those three funds who believe it would be

better for the Provinces to have more experience of home expenditure , as then they would more fully appreciate tbe advantages of the central Institutions . We are not of fchat

opinion , however , and believe every fund that is established in the Provinces knocks another nail into the coffin of tbe older organisations . Happily they want good sized coffins for their burial .

Ifc is nofc often English Freemasonry receives such an increase as three new Lodges in one day , even if we take the whole of England into account , but that is what is to happen on the 30 fch inst ., and thafc too within the borders of the city of

Newcastleupon-Tyne , where the consecration of three new Lodges is to form part of the business of the Provincial Grand Lodge , at its annual communication . We think the event will be a unique one

in the annals of Freemasonry in this country , and certainly provides unmistakable evidence of the growth of the Order in the far north . We hope each of the new Lodges will enjoy all the advantages of prosperity .

The Installation meeting of the Eothesay Lodge , No . 1687 was held on Wednesday , at the Frascati , and proved in every way a success , the Lodge giving further promise of maintaining

its present high character . Bro . A . E . Clements was installed as Master , three Initiates and a joining Member were received , and other propositions were submitted . We shall give a full report of the proceedings in our nexfc issue .

An interesting ceremony took place on the 25 th ulfc ., afc Jesmond Old Cemetery , Newcastle , in the unveiling by Brother Joseph Cook P . P . G . S . W ., the oldest Pasfc Master of St . Peter ' s

Lodge , No . 481 , of a memorial erected to . the memory of the late Bro . Thomas Dinning P . M . 481 P . P . G . J . W . Brother Thomas Purvis , Greenside House , Ryton , has acted as Secretary of the memorial Committee .

We tender our congratulations and good wishes to Brother John Bartlett Organist of the Abbey Lodge , No . 2030 , on the occasion of his marriage , which took place on Wednesday last , 25 th

ulfc ., at Sc . Peter ' s Church , Cranley Gardens , Soufch Kensington , to Miss Annie L . Boreham , in fche presence of a large number of Masonic and other friends .

The meetings of the Eoyal Savoy Mark Lodge of Instruction are held on Sunday evenings , at 8 o ' clock , future gatherings being arranged to take place at the Eailway Hotel , Highbury Station , where Mark Masons are cordially invited to assist in the work .
