Iu the first place , Russia ' s losses of men by sickness are on

the increase , and it is said that as many as ten per cent . are being incapacitated daily in Bulgaria alone . Not much more than a third of tho artillery are properly horsed , and the cavalry have great difficulty in getting fodder . Then it must be remembered that Russia is weak financially ,

though strong as a military power , if wo look only at the numerical strength of her army . Turkey , too , though reduced to the agonies of despair , has still a respectable force at Constantinople , and sho might prefer to fight against , rather than on the side of , her

hereditary foe . Austria-Hungary likewise takes pretty nearly the same view as England respecting the treaty of San Stefano , and she has an army almost as numerous as Russia . Roumania and Servia are dissatisfied with the terms of peace , and the former is resolved not to part

with her portion of Bessarabia , if she can help it , and only on compulsion . Altogether the perils which seem , to await Russia , if she insists on the treaty of San Stefauo being forced down tho throats of the other European powers , are such , that now General Ignatieff has gained

nothing by his visit to Vienna the Czar may well pause before setting England at defiance , and not England only , but the moral force of the whole of Europe as well . Even

Prince Bismarck seems to think there is something in Lord Salisbury ' s despatch , ancl the present attitude of this country . So there is a chance , albeit only a slight one , that peace may be preserved .

At that dread moment , within sight Of Shanklin ' s pleasant beach , and hail ! A Frigate hove , grand in her might Of seamen brave , and full in sail . Bnt , lo ! a moment , and she reels :

Tho wind in fury tarns her o ' er , And down she goes . Oh ! heart tbafc feels , Present a prayer ; thou ' rt on tlie shore . She ' s gone , and only two remain Of those Three Hundred seamen , bold :

On Sunday , 2-ltli March 1 S 78 . this magnificent vessel , the Eurydiee , one of the finest sailing frigates in the British ! Navy , after rounding Dunnose headland , near Shanklin , in the Isle of Wi ght , on her return from tho West Indies , was turned over b y the force of tha elements , after which she sank . Sho had 5300 seamen on board , of whom only two survived ,
