All Books intended for Eeview should be addressed to the Editor of The Freemason ' s Chronicle , 67 Barbican , E . C . Practical Guide to Ennlish Versification . With a Compendious
Dictionary of Rhymes , an Examination of Classical Measures , aud Comments upon Burlesque and Comic Verse , Vers do Societe , and Song Writing . By Tom Hood . A New and Enlarged Edition . To whioh are added Byssho ' s "Rules for Making English Verso , " & c London : John Hogg , Paternoster . row . 1877 .
THE English student who may have any taste for versification , or who is in tho habit of cultivating the Muses , will find this Guide of much assistance . As the late lamented author remarks in his preface , it is not intended as " a handbook for poets or a guide to poetry ; " its aim is "to teach the art of versification . " It is written
with the object of enumerating , explaining , and defining tho laws of this art , and this it does very clearly , concisely , and correctly . After a chapter devoted to "Verso Generally , " the work passes ou to treat of " Classic Versification , " its character , its measures , its structure , and the points worthy of observation in tho composition of such
measures . Tho Hexameter , Pentameter , Alcaic , and Sapphic measures necessarily claim tho first and principal share of attention , but none are overlooked . Wo are thou treated to an account of tho various Guides aud Handbooks which had been published previously , and then in Chapters IV . to VII ., both inclusive , "The Rules of Rhyme "
are laid clown for ns , under the separate and distinct heads of " Feet and Ca'sura , " " Metre and Rhythm , "and "Rhyme . " These chapters contain the pith of the work , and are greatly to be commended for tho careful manner in which thoy have been written . After a few remarks on Burlesque and Comic Verse and Song-Writing , which may be
followed unhesitatingly , knowing , as we do , tho author ' s practical experience in these branches of versification , there comes a very useful Dictionary of Rhymes , Avhich may bo described as invaluable to those who are much given to poetic effusions . There is an Appendix , containing a reprint of part of the introductory portion of " Tho Young Poet ' s Guide , " and Bysshe ' s "Rules for Making English Verse , "
both of which will be found to greatly enhance tho value of this little Guide . Bro . Hogg , we think , has dono well in publishing this new edition , and it will bo found of particular service in those of our public and private schools where any attention is paid to the art of writing English verse . Speaking with a full recollection of the carelessness with which our own schoolfellows treated tho occasional
exercises m English verse which wero set them , we should say that this Guide would bo of great assistance , and would probably create an interest in this class of work . Ib would also help , as tho author euggests , to improve tho pronunciation of English among our youth , if it did not contribute to swell materially tho ranks of English
versifiers . Ib will do even more bhan bhis , ior a knowledge of rhythm will enable people bo read correctly bhe works of our poets , and our readers will admit there is ample room for improvement iu this respect . Iu fine , the book is deserving of great praise , and Ave thank Bro . Hogg for his courtesy iu enabling us to give expression to this opinion .
