has fallen asleep , it is not without deep emotion that 1 come forward to fulfil the duty which devolves upou me to sketch briefly tho main features of tho life of the man whoso death we deplore , ami to proclaim the reason why wo aro here ; why wo display around this modest grave all tho funeral pomp of Masonic mourning . Poland was tho native land of Albert Sehmitt ; he loved his country , aud tho
dream of his boyhood was to deliver her from tho cruel tyranny of a foreign foo ; to awaken her from the sleep of years ; and to raise her again to that rank amongst nations from which she had fallen . Later on , when scarcely a youth , ho joined the noble baud of patriots -who , by a desperate effort , endeavoured to lift from her prostrate form the crushing weight of foreign oppression . Success did not
crown their efforts . Woo to the vanquished ! Tho bayonet and the rifle bullet laid low many a noble form ! Exile was the refuge of the many ! Long years havo now elapsed sinco Albert Sehmitt trod for tho first timo on Jersey soil . He came as a stranger , alone amongst strangers , to claim tho hospitality that Jersey has never refused to the vanquished . Ho brought with him , however , two ideas which
have accompanied him and consoled him in tho hour of misfortune , until his heart ceased to beat : the remembrance of his mother and tho image of his native land . His friends who are hero , and who loved him , can bear mo out , when I say , that often when his eye was fixed on ideal horizons , and ho dropped a tear , the past arose before him , as it would have been if he had not sacrificed his all , on the
altar of his fatherland . As he had loved his mother , as ho had devoted himself for his country , so he clung to Freemasonry , with the passionate fondness of a man who has concentrated in it all the treasures of his loving heart . Not to tho outward symbol , or to Masonio millinery , but to the grand principles of our Order , did he cling ; to charity , to brotherly affection , to the worship of truth and
virtue in its various forms . That is why we aro here , to accompany to his last homo the man , who , in tho minute details of every day life , practised the virtues which are tho columns upon which rest our ancient Institution . Albert Sehmitt , we bid yon an eternal adieu ! We cast a last sorrowing look on thy coffin ; but still we hope , for beyond the grave the dawn of eternal life sheds upon us
its heavenly light , and by thy grave we proclaim our firm belief in the existence of tho Great Architect of tho Universe , and our constant hopo that when it pleaseth him to remove us from this , our temporary abode , we may accompany thee in that great Lodge npon high , where they , who have carried out the noble principles of our Order , will for ever live . Brother Sehmitt , good-bye , we will no
longer hear thy voice , as of old , but thou wilt live in our hearts , and the noble example of thy life will not be lost upon ns . Brethren , one more word , and I have done . Our brother has lived , as a Mason should live ; he has died , aa wo should wish to die ; for has he not accomplished the wish of the poet— ' Qn'ils menrent pleins de jours , que leur mort soit pleuree ; qu ' un ami leur ferme les yeux .
